Description: [ Autographed ] Adams, Rufus. Autograph Letter Signed to Stephen Twining. 11/2 pages, 4to, second page written on verso of integral address leaf; usual folds. Minor edge wear and remains of red wax seal on first page. Plainfield, Conn., 5 January 1796 E300-400 Amusing look at the life of an 18th-century U.S. student reading law. Adams comments wryly on the major figures he encountered: "I breathe nothing but the affluvia which arises from Blackstone, Old Coke, Hawkins & the Devil Old Coke always sticks his Norman French exactly in my face I think I am willing to dispense with his Norman tongue. Old Hawkins stands up very well for the crown-but for my part I would not give a damning for half of the crowned heads in Europe six years from this.' An interesting letter that gives broad hints of the rising nationalism in the practice of U.S. law.
