Description: French School 17th/18th Century Meleager Presenting the Head of the Calydonian Boar to Atalanta Oil on panel 14 1/2 x 18 1/2 inches (37 x 47 cm) The hunt for the monstrous boar of Calydon -- a wild region of central Greece-- was one of the great expeditons of ancient Greek mythology. Organized by Meleager, a prince of Calydon, it drew in the strength and skill of a number of notable heroes. One of these was the famous huntress Atalanta, who was the first to wound the animal. Later, Meleager, who had struck the death blow, presented the boar's head to Atalanta as a token of his love for her. This work is related to a version of the story by Charles Le Brun now in the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.
