Description: A terracotta souvenir pilgrim flask, Coptic Egypt, c. AD 480 - 650, depicting Saint Menas on either side, flanked by camels, his arms outstretched in blessing. Above each arm is a quincunx, representing a cross; all within a beaded circular border. H: 3 4/5 in (9.7cm), W: 2 3/5 in (6.6cm). Intact with reconstruction to one handle and part of the mouth. Cf. The small flasks were probably produced at the pilgrimage center of Abu Mena, south-west of Alexandria, to sell to the devout as a souvenir of a visit. Description: A large resin Alva museum replica of piece, likely of a Parthenon frieze section. It depicts a rider on a horse, H: 17 4/5 in (45.2cm). It is marked with a sliver of what was once a descriptive tag and there is sticker residue consistent with the dimensions of the Alva museum replica tags on other pieces from the collection, leading us to belief it is also an Alva museum replica. Alva Museum Replicas History (1948 - 1990): Replicas were designed by Alva Studios, operated by Alfred Wolkenberg. Alfred was born in Vienna in 1911 and immigrated to the US in 1939. In 1948 he founded Alva Studios of Long Island City, NY. He had many artists and designers who were commissioned to produce reproductions of ancient jewelry and sculpture. Description: A lot of 4 terracotta oil lamps. The first an Islamic type, c. 10th - 11th Century, wheel made, with round body and rimmed fill-hole, conical spout with rounded tip, raised disk base on bottom, L: 2 4/5 in (7.1cm), D: 1 3/4 in (4.4cm). The second a footed black Hellenistic lamp, 3rd-1st Century BC, in 'Pocketwatch' style, with faux lug handle to side, large loop handle, and a concave fill hole. Losses to the spout, L: 4 in (10.1cm), D: 2 1/3 in (5.9cm). The third a Greek type lamp with a large round body, c. 3rd-1st Century BC, L: 3 1/4 in (8.2cm), D: 2 2/5 in (6.2cm). The fourth possibly Grand Tour, 19th Century, in Roman discus lamp form, with raised sides around the fill hole with a rosette decorating the discus and ribbing around the shoulder, L: 3 7/8 in (9.8cm), D: 2 1/4 in (5.7cm). The second a Roman-style discus lamp depicting a Romano-Egyptian face with raised bump decoration filling the rest of the discus, L: 4 1/8 in (10.5cm), D: 3 in (7.6cm). Description: A lot of 3 ancient ceramic lamps. The first is a Roman red-ware example from Egypt, c. 4th Century AD, with a scalloped device around the fill-hole and an insect-like motif before the wick-hole, L: 3 1/4 in (7.6 cm). The other lamps are Byzantine/Islamic types from the Eastern Mediterranean, c. 6th - 7th Century, the red-ware example particularly nice with raised lines and a pellet within concentric circles, a similar design on base, L: 3 1/8 in (7.3 cm). The black-ware type with hatched lines around the shoulder and a palm-frond on the base, L: 3 1/8 in (7.3 cm). Ex English private collection.

Description: A lot of 3 terracotta lamps from Roman Egypt, 2nd - 3rd Century AD. The first is decorated with a stylized petal motif and with an elongated nozzle, L: 3 in (7.6 cm); the second with ribbing on the shoulder and volutes above the spout, L: 3 1/4 in (8.3 cm); and the last a 'frog' type with garland around the shoulder, L: 2 7/8 in (7.4 cm).
