Lot 207: Spencer Finch, (American, b. 1962), Moonlight (Luna County, New Mexico, July 13, 2003), Neon sculpture with filters, 24"

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Spencer Finch (American, b. 1962) Moonlight (Luna County, New Mexico, July 13, 2003) Neon sculpture with filters Edition of 100. Commissioned for Cabinet's first annual Winter Benefit, this limited edition sculpture by Spencer Finch consists of a filtered fluorescent tube whose glow precisely replicates the light of the full moon over Luna County, New Mexico, on July 13, 2003. One of the central concerns of Spencer Finch's work is the relationship between color, light, memory, and history. In 2003, he exhibited Eos, for which he traveled to the site of ancient Troy (in modern Turkey) and measured the color and density of the light of dawn using a device called a colorimeter. Using 75 filtered fluorescent lights installed on the ceiling at Postmasters Gallery, he replicated perfectly within the gallery space what is perhaps literature's most famous 'rosy-fingered' dawn. Selected by Artforum as one of the standout shows of 2003, Eos was the beginning of a series of works in which Finch has reproduced, using a variety of means, the light of one locale in another. The current artwork has a particular connection to Cabinet. In July 2003, Finch and Cabinet's editor-in-chief Sina Najafi traveled to Deming, New Mexico, to see for the first time a half-acre of scrubland outside Deming that the magazine had bought sight-unseen in January 2003 for its spring issue on 'Property.' Finch had accepted a commission to produce a special artwork for Cabinet's fundraiser and had proposed a 'nightlight,' a modified fluorescent light that would represent the moonlight somewhere else in the world. When Finch found out that Cabinet's half-acre was in the serendipitously named Luna County, the location for the artwork was determined. This edition's high CRI (Color Resolution Index) fluorescent tube is wrapped with nine colored filters of different spectral qualities, ranging from magenta to indigo. About the Artist Spencer Finch has exhibited internationally since receiving an M.F.A from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1989. His works, which have been exhibited at venues including the Portikus Gallery (Frankfurt) and the Wadsworth Atheneum (Hartford), was included in the 2004 Whitney Biennial. (image from Cabinet) 24"

Description: Aaron Miley (American) Nesting Tables Plywood, latex paint and slip cast porcelain BS University of Arkansas, MFA Herron School of Art & Design "I believe the key to furniture making is understanding that viewers have preconceived notions of what furniture is and should be, which results in varying interpretations and reactions. My goal for this body of work is to trigger a visceral reaction within the viewer; which is essentially a triggered memory. The content of this triggered memory is irrelevant, and could be anything from pleasure and fondness to contempt and shock, the important thing is that an emotional response was elicited. These pieces are meant to directly challenge the viewer's constructed ideas of furniture by the use of iconic forms juxtaposed against intentionally decaying elements." - Aaron Miley 21" H x 22 1/4" Diam (largest)
