A. Monroe Gravitating Stopper in Deep Blue Aqua

Description: A. Monroe, Eureka H. B. (Humboldt Bay), Cal. Gravitating Stopper embossed base. This bottle is one of the prettiest Gravitating Stopper bottles you'll ever see. Heavily whittles with good crudeness in the glass, the color is nothing short of spectacular. Two external lip chips that are invisible on the shelf. This bottle is subject to the longest story in Markota's book on California Hutchinson soda bottles. We suspect that it was produced in 1876, the opening year of the business. It is the oldest in the series of six different Monroe bottles, and was the only specimen ever seen by one prominent Eureka collector. Two Varieties of the New Almaden Soda Bottles

Description: Two varieties of the New Almaden soda bottles . Here are the 1860's clean aqua bottle with "W&W" embossed on the reverse (surface bubble break at right base edge) with some nice elongated bubbles, and a blue-aqua example of the 1879 dated variety with a little bit of stain. The New Almaden sodas have always been popular. Now a state park, the site had the largest American mercury mine for almost half a century. Worked by the Spanish before the gold rush, this property became a central figure in a legal battle that went all the way to the Supreme Court (and White House). The mineral springs there ran out through time, as well as contained mercury. This is a choice historical pair for any western mining or soda collector. Description: Two of the early Spaulding drug bottles. Thee are the two pictured in Ghost Towns and Medicines, page 347 (the top two). They are the older of the Spaulding bottles, probably dating to the beginning of his business in the late 1880's to early 1890's. These are the only two of these variants we've seen. The third, later bottle, is much more common. Susanville is about an hour and a half north of Reno, and primarily served the lumber and agriculture business. Description: This is the ultra-rare amber Thaxter from Carson City. Thought to be only three or four known, it is one of the great Nevada rarities. The bottle may date to the late 1870's or perhaps 1880. It must have had a specific content, though newspaper advertisements didn't reveal the contents. It is 9" tall. Thaxter ran his business in Carson from 1878-1903. He moved to Redlands, California in 1893 and opened a store there, also with an embossed drug bottle. Description: Goldfield Bottling Company Soda Works, a sparkling dark purple clean example. This choice rare crown top soda has only a minor ding on the base. The large embossed letters G.B. Co. are visible on the front, and are an abbreviation for the Goldfield Bottling Company. The bottle probably dates to the earliest of this company's existence, c. 1904-1906. This was the important development period for Goldfield, one of the WestÕs largest gold ore deposits. It produced in excess of 8,000,000 ounces of gold over time.
