Description: An interesting red porphyry figure of the god Canopus, Late Period, c.664 - 343 BC, the deity is surmounted by head of Osiris wearing a tripartite headdress, a shrine and winged scarab on front. 3 3/4" (9.5 cm). Some overall wear. H: 3 3/4" (9.5 cm). Ex Negus collection, UK, early 20th century. Canopus is not encountered often and this is a nice hard stone example! Canopus was an Egyptian water god, whose form was a terracotta vessel decorated with an effigy. A tale relates to the Chaldeans sending a challenge to all other gods. This challenge was accepted by a priest of Canopis, who placed his god's image amidst the fires of the Chaldean gods. Canopis sprouted water and extinguished the fires of the other gods, therefore claiming victory.

Description: A bronze and marble figure of the Sacred Ibis, Late Period, c. 664 - 30 BC. The bird, sacred to the god Thoth, rests with feet forward, wings closed against the body. Of composite composition, the head and legs are bronze, nicely detailed with large eyes and gently curving beak and the body is of marble, the outside nicely textured. The bronze parts of the figure are original, the head cleaned and beginning to tone, the feet with some areas of green encrustation and well-preserved, the tops having been extended with restoration to fit into the marble body, which is of modern construction. H: 2 7/8" (7.3 cm); L: 4" (10.2 cm). Nicely mounted on a small wood base and a very nice display piece! Ex. French Collection.
