Edwin H. Blashfield / American, 1848-1936 / Plage a Trouville

Ships From: Sheffield, MA US

Description: A native New Yorker, Edwin Howland Blashfield was a mural and genre easel painter in conservative style, who was especially noted in his mural work for coordinating with architects so that his work fit the overall vision for its setting. Trained in the academic tradition in Europe and America, he rose to national prominence at age forty-five during the 1893 Chicago World's Fair Exposition for his mural, "The Art of Metal Working". It was a series of utilitarian-theme paintings that were installed in the eight domes of the Manufactures and Liberal Arts Building, the largest structure at the Exposition. After the success of this commission, Blashfield devoted himself almost exclusively to mural painting, which was experiencing a revival during that period known as the American Renaissance. It was a time of prosperity when many architects were designing large private homes, and public buildings whose decoration included murals with laudatory themes of the work ethic and associated virtues that created the prosperity. Blashfield's commissions included the dome of the Library of Congress, Detroit Public Library, Union League Club of Chicago, Court House of Baltimore, Cleveland Federal building, and capitol buildings of Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. He also did murals for many churches such as the Church of the Ascension in New York City and St. Matthew's Church in Washington DC. Active in numerous cultural organizations, Blashfield was President of the National Academy of Design in New York from 1920 to 1926 and a member of the Architectural League of New York, the National Sculpture Society and the National Society of Mural Painters. Exhibition venues for easel painting were extensive and included the National Academy of Design, Paris Salon, Brooklyn Art Association, Pennsylvania Academy, and the Royal Academy in London. In 1913, Blashfield's book, "Mural Painting in America" was published, which was a compilation of his lectures at the Art Institute of Chicago and reflected his verbal eloquence as a champion of mural painting. He made it clear that mural painting was distinctly different from easel painting in that easel painting was quite often intended only to convey aesthetic beauty but that murals went beyond aesthetic focus to teach lessons about patriotism, morality and historical roots. In other words, murals incorporated aesthetics to convey utilitarian themes. As an easel painter, Blashfield did subjects including genre, portraits, ancient ruins and Indian figures. He developed a distinctive format that placed both real and allegorical figures in settings of historical and moral themes. Much of Blashfield's earlier works included historical genre costume pieces that demonstrate his interest in dress and furnishings. In both easel paintings and his murals, Blashfield proceeded from careful black-and-white studies to finished oils on canvas. He often used a frieze-like format for his classically beautiful women, whom he depicted with elegant line and rich, inventive color. For murals, his working technique was to complete the work on canvas, and then mount the canvas on the wall, which meant he could work in his own studio until the work was ready for installation. Blashfield was born in New York in 1948. He studied in Boston briefly in the mid 1860's with Thomas Johnston and William Rimmer. From 1867 to 1870 and 1874 to 1880, he was in Paris where his studies included the private atelier of Leon Bonnat and close association with Jean-Leon Gerome, who was a prominent historical genre painter and teacher at the Academy Julian. During this period, he also was in Germany, Italy and Switzerland. Upon returning to the United States, Blashfield took up residence in the Sherwood Studio Building in New York from 1881-87. Then he left for six more years of travel, which included Egypt, Europe and England. He spent the summer of 1887 at the artist colony at Broadway, England and associated with American painters Edwin Austin Abbey, Frederick Leighton and Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Edwin Blashfield died in 1936. Of him it was written: "Along with William Morris Hunt and John LaFarge, Blashfield was one of the most prolific and important of the American mural painters." (Falk, 344)

Alfred Arthur Brunel De Neuville / French 1852-1941 / Mother and Kittens at Play

Ships From: Sheffield, MA US

Description: One of the most popular subjects for an artist during the 19th century was cats and dogs. As the Industrial Revolution progressed and more people moved to the large cities, the number of people keeping cats and dogs as pets increased. With this increase more and more artists were called upon to paint charming and sentimental works featuring the domesticated animals.   Arthur A. Brunel de Neuville was a French 19th century artist working in Paris who took up the call and devoted his artistic talent to portraying the different moods of cats and kittens. A typical scene includes a small feline family drinking from a bowl of milk, playing with a ball of yarn or toying with a bug. His animals are often set against a dark background, in the corner of a room, and are painted in a mixture of the Academic and Impressionistic styles.   Brunel de Neuville also painted a number of still life paintings during his lifetime. These works are often rustic in feeling and definitely reflect the Realist tradition that was so prevalent during the late 19th century.   Since 1879 he exhibited at the Salon of French Artists in Paris. He became a member of the French Artists Society in1907. As with many of his contemporaries, his work was very popular during his lifetime and he exhibited a number of works at the various exhibition halls. Today examples of his work can be seen in museums in Beziers, Brest and Chateau-Thierry. Provenance: Private Estate, Boston, MA. Le Trianon Fine Art & Antiques, Sheffield, MA.

Elise Asher / American, 1914-2004 / Father and Son

Ships From: Sheffield, MA US

Description: Elise Asher, a poet and painter who lived in New York and Provincetown was the wife of poet Stanley Kunitz. Elise Asher, a Village bohemian whose friends included the Abstract Expressionist painters Philip Guston, Franz Kline, and Mark Rothko. Elise Asher and Stanley Kunitz married and moved in together on Twelfth Street in Manhattan. The painters gave Kunitz the community he’d missed during his rural exile: “They all were living down in the Village and, on their way to the Cedar Tavern—where they met quite regularly—when they passed our house they would throw pebbles or sand against our windows, like a greeting.” Kunitz was a great cook; he prepared all his and Elise’s meals—and loved to entertain. Practically every other week, they threw a party for the gang, and a lot of dancing went on, and singing. The Kunitzes’ current Twelfth Street apartment, where they moved in the seventies was full of artifacts of the time: a thick pink-and-red Guston oil painting inscribed with verses from Kunitz’s “Vita Nuova”; a Robert Motherwell collage entitled “Provincetown: Stanley’s View”; one of Kline’s first paintings to use color, which Kunitz received when he admired it on the floor of Kline’s studio. Elise matched the décor: she liked to wear a red Indian gown with paisleys stitched in white thread, red socks, Birkenstocks, lipstick, and little plastic barrettes. Elise Asher was born in Chicago. She was educated at the Art Institute of Chicago, Boston College, Bradford Academy and Simmons School of Social Work. She began writing poetry at an early age and moved to New York in 1947 where she began to also paint seriously. In 1953 she had her first solo painting show at Tanager Gallery in New York and published her first book of poetry, "The Meandering Absolute," in 1955. That book was re-edited, added to and reissued in 2000 under the title "The Night Train." She also published "The Visionary Gleam," a book which joined her writings with her artwork and also incorporated the writings of other poets she admired including that of her husband, the former U.S. Poet Laureate, Stanley Kunitz. Through the years she also published her work in many journals such as the Partisan Review. Her paintings were well received and she was very involved in the women’s art movement. Her work was shown in more than two dozen solo shows in New York, Boston, Minneapolis, Richmond, Wellfleet and Provincetown. Locally, in 1992 the Provincetown Art Association and Museum held a solo show and in 2000 the Fine Arts Work Center (FAWC) held a large retrospective curated by Varujan Boghosian. She also took part in numerous group shows and her work is held in almost 20 public collections including the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C. Some of the images have a Surrealist air: a car on a lonely road is blanketed by a spiderweb; a giant wristwatch arches over both like a bridge. Others are drawn from childhood memories of people and houses long gone. ''Content to Lie Down With Family Ghosts'' is one of a series based on Mr. Kunitz's poem ''The Long Boat,'' about someone suddenly adrift at sea who finds himself relinquishing ''conscience, ambition, and all that caring,'' letting himself go ''as if he didn't know/he loved the earth so much/he wanted to stay for ever.'' Ms. Asher's respose to the words is a beautiful, earth-loving painting: a little Milton Averyish, a little Morris Gravesian, but with a grave, haunted air of psychological mystery that is entirely her own, and has affinities with work by older artists like the late Anne Poor, and younger artists like Amy Sillman. A more complete sense of Ms. Asher's range as an artist and writer can be found in her 1994 book ''The Visionary Gleams'' (Sheep Meadow Press), which is well worth a look. Like much of this valuable artist's work, it's idiosyncratic, tender and tough. At the time of her 2000 exhibit at FAWC, Ms. Asher talked to the Banner about her life, the cross country train trips she and her siblings made each year to visit New Mexico, the sleeping porch of her youth that she says was haunted by an owl and one sensed the way she mixed the mythic with the mundane to create her writings and paintings. Her daughter Babette Becker says her mother’s work was "inventive and visionary" and added that the paintings were often based on literary references. "She had three or four major periods of painting and created from a real blending of the two arts," her daughter said. "She was communicating the mystery of human experience." She is described by her daughter as not being a public person despite having many friends. She was formerly married to painter Nanno de Groot before marrying Kunitz in 1957. She and Kunitz shared a common passion for their arts. In her later years painting became too physical for her and she gave it up, instead writing at a small card table, relying on her poetry to speak to the world. She is described as quirky and possessing a wry sense of humor and a penchant for both visual and written puns. Despite her humor, she was intent on writing down the important matters of life. In her Banner interview in 2000, she said, "You’re breathing words…When you think of it, it’s marvelous. It keeps you alive. … Somebody has to witness what you are doing, otherwise it doesn’t exist." Stanely Kunitz, Elise’s husband published his second collection, “Passport to the War.” The book was mostly well reviewed, but it disappeared fast. The outstanding poem of the collection, “Father and Son,” picked up the lost-father motif. Kunitz described pursuing his father through the twilight fields of suburban Worcester, imagining how to make up for all the lost time, how to “bridge the chasm in a casual tone,” when, suddenly, “At the water’s edge, where the smothering ferns lifted / Their arms, ‘Father!’ I cried, ‘Return! You know / The way. I’ll wipe the mudstains from your clothes; / No trace, I promise, will remain. Instruct / Your son, whirling between two wars, / In the Gemara of your gentleness.’ ” This was before Ginsberg’s “Kaddish” and Plath’s “Daddy,” when direct address of a parent was still a surprising poetic strategy. This poetry combined with the abstract expressionism of the late fifties and early sixties are quite evident in this painting titled “Father and Son”. The painting shows the remarkable passion the two had for the arts.

Although considered to be self taught, his formal education was provided in the bohemian arts area through his encounters and friendships with other popular avant-garde artists, such as; Pablo Picasso, Jacques Villon, Gino Severini, Van Dongen and Jean Paul Francois Galle. Ameglio established his atelier within walking distance of the heart of Montmartre, la Butte, at 23, rue Clauzel. Ameglio became a member of the Paris Salons and exhibited regularly there. In 1938, during the International Art Exposition he won considerable acclaim and was awarded his first honorable mention for the painting "Cathedrale de Rouen". In October 1969, a year before his passing, a retrospective exhibition of his work was held a year before his death at the Galerie Cambaceres in Paris. He primarily worked in oil, but worked in various other mediums as well. His work can be found in numerous private and public collections worldwide. He died at his home in Montmartre, Paris on July 29, 1970.

Clifford Warren Ashley / American, 1881–1947 / A View from Mishaum Point to Barney´s Joy, South Dartmouth Massachusetts

Ships From: Sheffield, MA US

Description: Clifford was a Massachusetts native and student of the Brandywine artist, Howard Pyle. Ashley was well known for his marine paintings and illustrations of New Bedford and Brandywine schools, his ship models, and his book, "The Ashley Book of Knots." On hand to witness the fading glory of the American whaling trade in New Bedford, Clifford Ashley made the most of early opportunities to study with master American illustrators and artists to visually record American whaling in the early 20TH Century. He would also author important whaling-related books, illustrate major publications and become a highly proficient sailor. Born in the prestigious whaling port town, Ashley graduated and went to study in Boston at the Eric Pape School alongside N.C. Wyeth, Sidney Chase and Henry Peck. The four artists then studied in the summer of 1901 under George Noyes, and soon Ashley was tutored in the company of Howard Pyle in Wilmington, Delaware. Ashley would establish his winter residence here, and summer nearly every year in New Bedford, along with his inherited farm in Westport, Massachusetts. Maritime settings inspired Ashley and he in turn inspired many others with thoughts and remembrances in marine scenes through his paintings and illustrations, such as the sixty plate drawings in his 1929 Book "Whaleships of New Bedford" and the forward by no other than President Franklin D. Roosevelt, or his important tome "The Ashley Book of Knots" in 1944. Still, his original artworks rise above to be rare, illusive and sought after by maritime art collections. The New Bedford Whaling Museum, in conjunction with the Brandywine Museum mounted a major show of the works of Clifford W. Ashley in a 1973 exhibition.

Lucien Adrion / French, 1889-1953 / Figures in a Landscape

Ships From: Sheffield, MA US

Description: Lucien Adrion was born in Strasbourg, France in 1889 and died in Cologne 1953. Post-Impressionist Lucien Adrion is considered an engraver, watercolorist and painter from the French school. He began his initial studies in Strasbourg as a draftsman. In 1907, at the age of 18, Lucien traveled to Paris to work for a large drafting company but changed his mind upon arrival. Rather than working for a large company, he decided to peruse his dreams of becoming an artist. Traveling like a vagabond, Lucien would leave Paris for London, Munich and to Frankfort, when the war ended to study. After the demobilization of Berlin, Lucien would study engraving under Franz Ritter von Struck (1863-1828), who was Marc Chagall’s teacher. He would return to Strasbourg and spend the next thirty years working as a lithographer. In 1921, Lucien Adrion had his first one-man exhibition at Galerie Chéron. Being independent by nature, Adrion would not divert from his decorative paintings of Normandy beaches or scenes of Paris (his favorite subject). He was a regular exhibitor with the Independents. In 1940, Lucien Adrion exhibited at the Jardins des Tuileries, the Salon d’Automne in Paris and again in 1941 at the Salon des Tuileries. Reference: E.
