Description: A George III Scottish silver twin handled trophy cup by George McHattie, Edinburgh 1808, retailer's mark 'Milroy' to foot rim, the tongue-capped angular handles issuing from leaves, the cylindrical body on a circular spreading foot with a threaded rim, the interior gilt, 22cm (8 1/2in) high, 716g (23 oz), on a later black plastic socle as a backgammon prize. The plaque to the socle engraved 'Second Prize Clermont Club Backgammon Tournament October 1966'. This was won by the present vendor's step-father, John Miller, when he was a member of the Clermont Club in the 1960s and backgammon player extraordinaire. The Clermont Set was an exclusive group of rich British gamblers who met at 44 Berkeley Square, in London's fashionable Mayfair district now located at 27-28 Curzon Street and called Aspinall's. The club was founded in 1962 by John Aspinall and the original membership included five dukes, five marquesses, almost twenty earls and two cabinet ministers. Society figures included Peter Sellers, Ian Fleming, David Stirling, Lucian Freud, 'Lucky' Lord Lucan, Lord Derby, Lord Boothby, and the Duke of Devonshire.
