Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Erró (Icelandic, 1932) Mao Entering New York Harbour, oil on canvas, signed and dated verso, 949 x 1505 mm, 1974. Erró is the foremost post-modern Icelandic artist who created large-scale paintings with political Pop Art undertones, using inspiration from science fiction and comic art but also creating many works in porcelain and mosaics. Although his archives are primarily held by the Reykjavik Art Museum, his art is represented in numerous museums and institutions worldwide. ***This image depicts Mao in his famous pose, waving after his 1966 crossing-the-Yangtze River swim wearing a bathrobe, and standing on top of an open boat with a group of athletic young people standing around him. While creating his Social Realist paintings, Erró was inspired by poster designs from the Cultural Revolution and, utilising the 1974 poster by Tang Xiaohe: "Forging Ahead in Wind and Waves", he transports this composition to the Hudson River and New York Harbour with Manhattan and the Empire State building on the left but with Wuhan Bridge still in the background. The artist created another version of this same image, also in 1974, with minor differences, now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Dole (France)..
