The Maîtres de l'Affiche (Masters of the Poster) were small format reproductions of what were ostensibly the best and most famous posters from around Europe and America, as selected by the famous critic (and poster supporter) Roger Marx. They were printed by the Chaix publishing house as a concession to the growing craze of poster collecting at the end of the 19th-century. Every month between 1896-1900, while the Maîtres were being published, subscribers would receive four new plates. Each plate is a full color lithograph printed on high quality paper. The complete series consists of 256 images. The appeal of the Maîtres was, and remains, their small, easy-to-collect format. These are the complete first two volumes (of five) featuring plates 1 to 96.

Lot 20: JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932). LIBRAIRE ED. SAGOT / AFFICHES-ESTAMPES. 1891. 93x33 inches, 237x85 cm. Chaix, Paris.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) LIBRAIRE ED. SAGOT / AFFICHES-ESTAMPES. 1891. 93 1/2x33 1/2 inches, 237 1/2x85 cm. Chaix, Paris. Condition B: chipping at edges; tears and creases in image. Framed. Ed. Sagot was not only the first important poster dealer in history, but also, along with Maindron and Beraldi, one of Chéret's most enthusiastic supporters. In 1891, Sagot published an impressive catalogue of posters for sale that contained 2233 items. In all, he printed 550 of these catalogues, 50 on vellum and the other 500 on regular paper. To help celebrate and promote the event, Sagot printed a special poster in four colors, designed by Chéret, which he included with the catalogue as follows: the 50 catalogues printed on vellum were issued with the poster without lettering, and the other 500 were issued with lettering. Chéret didn't design a poster specifically for this event. Instead he revisited an unused project for the Parisian department store La Belle Jardiniere, which explains why the image has no obvious connection to poster collecting. Due to the nature of this poster, we know that it was never posted outdoors and unlike just about every other poster, we know how many were printed. Broido 528, Maindron 427, DFP-II 218, Reims 406, Cheret 669.

Description: EUGÈNE GRASSET (1841-1917) [L'ÉVENTAIL.] Decorative panel. 1900. 51x33 inches, 129 1/2x84 cm. Condition B / B-: extensive creasing and abrasions in image; repaired tears and restoration in margins and image. Framed. For the 1900 Exposition Universelle Grasset designed jewelry, stained glass and tapestries. He was also commissioned to design two decorative panels for the event. "They are his most successful lithographed panels, daring in the boldness of his colors, contrasting blues and greens with orange, yellow and black . . . Using the same colors in both he carefully balances them while yet remaining at his freest in his use of line. From a distance, the well defined outlines are clear, there is no muddy blending at the edges; yet seen close to there is an astonishing lack of 'stained glass' leading in the lines, which appear like thick brush strokes, retaining the spontaneity of a sketch" (Arwas p. 85). Murray-Robertson p. 188, Arwas p. 86.
