Description: Descent to Hell.Engraving, circa 1475-80. 362x293 mm; 14 3/8x11 5/8 inches. Trimmed inside the plate mark, mounted on cream laid paper. A good, dark impression of this extremely scarce print.According to Hind, "By the engraver whom we suspect to have been Zoan Andrea, copied from a drawing by Mantegna dating about two decades earlier."We have found only 4 other impressions at auction in the past 20 years.Based on the Mantegna painting from the Basia Johnson collection which sold at Sotheby's, New York, January 2003, for $25 million.
