Lot 1: ARMAND GUILLAUMIN, (FRENCH, 1841-1927), "LES RUINS DU CHATEAU DE CROZANT"

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: ARMAND GUILLAUMIN (french, 1841-1927)/span "LES RUINS DU CHATEAU DE CROZANT" Signed bottom left, oil on canvas. Executed ca. 1898 23 3/8 x 28 3/4 in. (59.1 x 73cm) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection. Christie's Paris, Art Impressionniste et Moderne, May 24, 2006, lot 60. Ray Kisber Art + Design, Quebec. Private Collection, Asheville, North Carolina. note:/span This lot will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Dominique Fabiani and Philippe Cazeau and will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné.

Condition Report: Frame: 32 1/2 x 26 1/2 in. (82.6 x 67.3cm) The painting has been extensively restored. See label on reverse for details of materials used in the restoration carried out in 2009. According to the label the lining of the painting appears to have been motivated by general fragility of the aged canvas which was not otherwise damaged. The paint layers evidently required consolidation and extensive repainting. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Freeman's Conditions of Sale.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: PABLO PICASSO (spanish, 1881-1973)/span 'FEMME TORERO, I (DERNIER BAISER?)' 1934, pencil signed, bears inscription '1ier état' (a trial proof before the intended edition of 50 which was never released), with full margins; printed by Lacourière, Paris, in 1939. Etching on Montval laid paper. image: 19 1/2 x 27 1/4 in. (49.5 x 69.2cm) sheet: 22 5/16 x 30 3/8 in. (56.7 x 77cm) [Bloch, 1329; Baer, 425.C] provenance: /spanThe artist. Buchholz Gallery, New York. Private Collection, Princeton New Jersey (purchased directly from the above ca. 1940). note:/span We are grateful to Emmanuel Benador for his assistance in researching this work.

Condition Report: Mr. Emmanuel Bendor advises that it is not uncommon for prints of the 1930's and 1940's Picasso to bear inscriptions such as the one that appears here: "1er etat" that are not in the artist's hand. Furthermore, it is not uncommon for these inscriptions to read as such, even when there is only one documented state of the print in existence. With light- and pale mat and time staining, a few soft handling creases (evident mainly when viewed verso). Minor surface soiling. Taped to the overmat with two strips of brown paper tape each measuring approx 2 x 4 inches, of which approximately 3/4-in. overlaps the print itself. There is a very faint strip of very faint staining along the reverse of the right margin edge that is evident only when examined under raking light. Two of the corners bent slightly such that the corners are now rounded, but this appears possibly to have occurred long ago and may be a result of the printing process. The owner of this print purchased it in the 1940's, framed it immediately and the work has not been taken out of the frame until now. The margins are full and while the light-staining is evident, otherwise the print is in very good, original condition. EDMONDO BACCI, (ITALIAN, 1913- 1978),

Lot 50: EDMONDO BACCI, (ITALIAN, 1913- 1978), "AVVENIMENTO #264"

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: EDMONDO BACCI (italian, 1913- 1978)/span "AVVENIMENTO #264" Signed bottom right, titled and signed verso, oil on canvas. 29 1/2 x 29 1/2 in. (74.9 x 74.9cm) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, Virginia.

Condition Report: The painting is in original unrestored condition. It retains its original unvarnished surface. The painting support is an open weave fabric in which the priming layer has generally filled the interstices of the weave. There are however, localized pin point losses where the paint and priming layers are absent from a given void in the canvas weave. Some of these may be original to the making of the painting while others can be seen under magnification to have exposed priming at their edges, rather than the artist's paint applications, indicating that the losses were not pre-existing at the time the paint was applied. In addition there are some large losses in specific area of the painting; in the upper right quadrant in the circular form (20-21" from the lower edge and 7 3/4"-97/8" from the right edge) is a diagonal succession of 3 1/2-3/4" losses where the uppermost paint layer and/or the priming layer has been lost. In the center of the composition there is another loss of paint and priming located 14" from the lower edge and 13 1/2" from the right edge. This is the result of a blow to the surface of the painting which has also distorted the support fabric and broken a few of the threads. In localized areas of the thick paint impasto the paint has prominent drying cracks which are an inherent and original part of the painting's appearance. Despite the depth and breadth of these cracks the paint remains adhered to the support. The support is generally slack on its keyed stretcher and has planar distortions that are related to the varying thickness of the paint applications throughout the composition, as well as to past handling.
