A Rare Chinese Gilt Bronze Figure of Jigong

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: A Rare Chinese Gilt Bronze Figure of Jigong also known as "The Laughing Mad Monk" holding drumstick and wine gourd and accompanied by his dog with his back showing a fan. He wears a bead bracelet on his right hand. Ji Gong believes that cultivation is through genuine Dharma practice from the heart and not by superficiality, outward pretense, blind rituals and mere abstinence of meat and wine. He is the Protector of the poor, weak and underdogs and he upholds social justice, law and rectitude. He punishes vice and evil and he saves lives and cures diseases through miracles and brings fortune to the poor. He is believed to be the manifestion of Amitabha Buddha. His unorthodox and care-free method of cultivation earns him the name of "The Laughing Mad Monk" or "The Crazy Monk" as he only outwardly delights in eating dog meat and drinking wine. Later people came to the realization and honored and revered him with his saying "The wine and meat may flow through the intestines but the Buddha remains in the heart". Even the Taoists revered him too and incorporated him into Taoist pantheon of divinities. Period: circa 19th Century or earlier. Height: 7.2cm. 銅鎏金濟公像
