Sale Notes:
This catalog features rare, antique and decorative books as well as select additions of art, ephemera and collectibles. Highlighted is another session from the estate of Norman Kane, including several single-author collections. Additionally, this catalog includes an array of signed books and ephemera as well as decorative and limited antique multi-volume sets.

Antique and rare books in this catalog feature numerous titles. Among the earliest examples are the vellum-bound writing by Oribasius, "Sardiani Collectorum Medicinalium," published in 1555, the 1792 printing of Robertson's "History of America," in three volumes and the 1768 first edition of Rousseau's "Dictionnaire de Musique." Other scarce titles include Pancoast's "Treatise on Operative Surgery," printed in 1846, Rollin's 1768 work on Roman history in ten volumes, and the 1963 first printing of Jack Schaefer's novel, "Monte Walsh," in the dust jacket. Other antique and collectible titles relate to Americana, Niagara Falls, music, art history, philosophy and other scholarly studies, many in decorative bindings, including leatherbound along with numerous author-signed modern and early classics by authors such as J. K. Rowling and Stephen King.

Pleasing collections will be featured. For example, noteworthy titles will be offered from a private collection of early legal works in original leather bindings. Included are the first 1827-1830 edition of Jonathan Elliot's "The Debates Resolutions and Other Proceedings in Convention on the Adoption of the Federal Constititution," in four volumes, Gilbert & Lofft's "Law of Evidence," published in 1795 and 1797 in two volumes and retaining the original fold-out chart, and the three-volume 1811 printing of Espinasse's "Digest of the Law of Actions and Trials at Nisi Prius."

Found throughout this catalog are offerings of artwork, ephemera and other collectibles. Of particular note is a collection of original correspondence to Kenneth Lindsay, who served as a Monument Man at the end of World War II, from important personages such as Andrew Wyeth, Robert F. Kennedy, George Grosz, Lyonel Feininger, Marcel Duchamp, Arnold Shoenberg and Thomas J. Watson. Artwork and prints include works by Miro and Kandinsky, along with a fine collection of linocuts by celebrated Scandinavian artist, Palle Nielsen. Select additions of other collectibles include lots of vintage and antique dolls and doll furniture.

Description: Title: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of AzkabanAuthor: J. K. Rowling - Joanne "Jo" Rowling OBE FRSL, best known by her pen name J. K. Rowling, is a British novelist, best known as the author of the Harry Potter fantasy series. The Potter books have gained worldwide attention, won multiple awards, and sold more than 400 million copies. They have become the best-selling book series in history, and been the basis for a series of films which has become the highest-grossing film series in history. Rowling had overall approval on the scripts and maintained creative control by serving as a producer on the final instalment.Born in Yate, Gloucestershire, Rowling was working as a researcher and bilingual secretary for Amnesty International when she conceived the idea for the Harry Potter series on a delayed train from Manchester to London in 1990. The seven-year period that followed entailed the death of her mother, divorce from her first husband and poverty until Rowling finished the first novel in the series, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (1997). Rowling subsequently published 6 sequels-the last, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" (2007)-as well as 3 supplements to the series. Since, Rowling has parted with her agency and resumed writing for adult readership, releasing the tragicomedy "The Casual Vacancy" (2012) and-using the pseudonym Robert Galbraith-the crime fiction novel "The Cuckoo's Calling" (2013) which, according to Rowling, is the first of a series.Rowling has led a "rags to riches" life story, in which she progressed from living on state benefits to multi-millionaire status within five years. She is the United Kingdom's best-selling author since records began, with sales in excess of £238m. The 2008 Sunday Times Rich List estimated Rowling's fortune at £560 million ($798 million), ranking her as the twelfth richest woman in the United Kingdom. Forbes ranked Rowling as the forty-eighth most powerful celebrity of 2007, and TIME magazine named her as a runner-up for its 2007 Person of the Year, noting the social, moral, and political inspiration she has given her fans. In October 2010, Rowling was named the "Most Influential Woman in Britain" by leading magazine editors. She has become a notable philanthropist, supporting such charities as Comic Relief, One Parent Families, Multiple Sclerosis Society of Great Britain and Lumos (formerly the Children's High Level Group). Lot 8008: James Joyce ULYSSES 1934 First American Edition Landmark Modernist Novel European Literature With Foreword & US District Court Opinion

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: UlyssesAuthor: James Joyce - James Augustine Aloysius Joyce was an Irish novelist and poet, considered to be one of the most influential writers in the modernist avant-garde of the early 20th century. Joyce is best known for "Ulysses" (1922), a landmark work in which the episodes of Homer's Odyssey are paralleled in an array of contrasting literary styles, perhaps most prominently the stream of consciousness technique he perfected. Other major works are the short-story collection "Dubliners" (1914), and the novels "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" (1916) and "Finnegans Wake" (1939). His complete oeuvre includes three books of poetry, a play, occasional journalism, and his published letters. Joyce was born to a middle class family in Dublin, where he excelled as a student at the Jesuit schools Clongowes and Belvedere, then at University College Dublin. In his early twenties he emigrated permanently to continental Europe, living in Trieste, Paris and Zurich. Though most of his adult life was spent abroad, Joyce's fictional universe does not extend beyond Dublin, and is populated largely by characters who closely resemble family members, enemies and friends from his time there; "Ulysses" in particular is set with precision in the streets and alleyways of the city. Shortly after the publication of "Ulysses" he elucidated this preoccupation somewhat, saying, "For myself, I always write about Dublin, because if I can get to the heart of Dublin I can get to the heart of all the cities of the world. In the particular is contained the universal."Publisher: Random HouseCity: New YorkYear: 1934Printing Information: First US EditionBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: xvii/767 pagesWidth: 6" Height: 8.5"Book Details: Condition / Notes: This is a stated first American edition of this landmark work. Description: Title: Oribasii Sardiani Collectorum medicinalium, libri XVII, qui ex magno septuaginta librorum volumine ad nostram aetatem soli perveneruntAuthor: Oribasius - Oribasius or Oreibasius was a Greek medical writer and the personal physician of the Roman emperor Julian the Apostate. He studied at Alexandria under physician Zeno of Cyprus before joining Julian's retinue. He was involved in Julian's coronation in 361, and remained with the emperor until Julian's death in 363. In the wake of this event, Oribasius was banished to foreign courts for a time, but was later recalled by the emperor Valens.Oribasius's major works, written at the behest of Julian, are two collections of excerpts from the writings of earlier medical scholars, a collection of excerpts from Galen and the Collectiones, a massive compilation of excerpts from other medical writers of the ancient world. The first of these works is entirely lost, and only 25 of the 70 (or 72) books of the Collectiones survive. The first five surviving books deal with food and drink. This work preserves a number of excerpts from older writers whose writings have otherwise been lost, and has thus been valuable to modern scholars. The earliest known description of a string figure, presented as the surgical sling Plinthios Brokhos by Greek physician Heraklas, is among the preserved material.Translor: Giambattista RasarioPublisher: Apud Bernardinum TurrisanumCity: ParisYear: 1555Binding Style: HardcoverPagination: 332 leavesWidth: 4.5" Height: 7"Book Details: Condition / Notes: Antique volume is bound in vellum with gilt-lettered spine label. Description: Title: A Christmas Carol in Prose: Being a Ghost Story of ChristmasAuthor: Charles Dickens - Charles John Huffam Dickens was an English novelist, generally considered the greatest of the Victorian period. Dickens enjoyed a wider popularity and fame than had any previous author during his lifetime, and he remains popular, having been responsible for some of English literature's most iconic novels and characters. Many of his writings were originally published serially, in monthly installments or parts, a format of publication which Dickens himself helped popularize at that time. Unlike other authors who completed entire novels before serialization, Dickens often created the episodes as they were being serialized. The practice lent his stories a particular rhythm, punctuated by cliffhangers to keep the public looking forward to the next installment. The continuing popularity of his novels and short stories is such that they have never gone out of print.Dickens' work has been highly praised for its realism, comedy, mastery of prose, unique personalities and concern for social reform by writers such as Leo Tolstoy, George Gissing and G.K. Chesterton; though others, such as Henry James and Virginia Woolf, have criticised it for sentimentality and implausibility.Publisher: Nims and KnightCity: Troy, New YorkYear: 1890Binding Style: HardcoverPagination: 121 pages plus 24 leaves of platesWidth: 9.5" Height: 11.25"Book Details: Condition / Notes: Antique volume is bound in green cloth with gilt-lettered cream cloth spine. Description: Title: The Reasonableness of Christianity, as Deliver'd in the Scriptures. To Which Is Added, a First and Second Vindication of the Same; From Some Exceptions and Reflections in a Treatise by the Rev. Mr. Edwards, Intitled, Some Thoughts, Concerning the Several Causes and Occasions of Atheism, Especially in the Present AgeAuthor: John Locke - John Locke FRS, widely known as the Father of Classical Liberalism, was an English philosopher and physician regarded as one of the most influential of Enlightenment thinkers. Considered one of the first of the British empiricists, following the tradition of Francis Bacon, he is equally important to social contract theory. His work had a great impact upon the development of epistemology and political philosophy. His writings influenced Voltaire and Rousseau, many Scottish Enlightenment thinkers, as well as the American revolutionaries. His contributions to classical republicanism and liberal theory are reflected in the United States Declaration of Independence.Locke's theory of mind is often cited as the origin of modern conceptions of identity and the self, figuring prominently in the work of later philosophers such as Hume, Rousseau and Kant. Locke was the first to define the self through a continuity of consciousness. He postulated that the mind was a blank slate or tabula rasa. Contrary to pre-existing Cartesian philosophy, he maintained that we are born without innate ideas, and that knowledge is instead determined only by experience derived from sense perception. Kaufman - George Simon Kaufman was an American playwright, theater director and producer, humorist, and drama critic. One play and one musical that he wrote won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama: "You Can't Take It With You" (1937, with Moss Hart), and "Of Thee I Sing" (1932, with Morrie Ryskind and Ira Gershwin). He also won the Tony Award as a Director, for the musical "Guys and Dolls" (1950)., Ira Gershwin - Ira Gershwin was an American lyricist who collaborated with his younger brother, composer George Gershwin, to create some of the most memorable songs of the 20th century. With George he wrote more than a dozen Broadway shows, featuring songs such as "I Got Rhythm," "Embraceable You," "The Man I Love" and "Someone to Watch Over Me". He was also responsible, along with DuBose Heyward, for the libretto to George's opera "Porgy and Bess."The success the brothers had with their collaborative works has often overshadowed the creative role that Ira played. However, his mastery of songwriting continued after the early death of George. He wrote additional hit songs with composers Jerome Kern ("Long Ago (and Far Away)"), Kurt Weill and Harold Arlen. His critically acclaimed book "Lyrics on Several Occasions" of 1959, an amalgam of autobiography and annotated anthology, is an important source for studying the art of the lyricist in the golden age of American popular song.
