Description: GEORGE BARRET, RA (IRISH, 1730-1784) A lake scene with figures seated in the foreground . A castle in the distance Oil on canvas (unlined) George Barret was born in Dublin in 1732. He began his artistic career as a pupil of Robert West at his drawing school in George's Lane, and was encouraged by Edmund Burke to take up landscape painting. His early works are views in Co. Wicklow, on the River Dargle and the Powerscourt Estate. Some of these were painted on a large scale. To seek his fortune as an artist, Barret travelled to London in 1762. His landscapes were favourably received and his patrons included the Duke of Buccleuch and the Duke of Portland of Welbeck Abbey. In 1768, Barret was one of the founders of the Royal Academy. He exhibited 13 works at the Society of Artists and 32 at the Royal Academy. Works by Barret can be seen at the National Gallery of Ireland, the Ulster Museum, the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.12¼ x 12¼ inches (31 x 31 cm.)

Galway. He began his artistic career in London, and from 1863 exhibited at the Royal Academy. Later, in 1871, he became a Member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. Burke resided in the Netherlands between 1870 and 1872, and in 1875 was one of the first Irish painters to move to Pont-Aven, France, to be followed by Aloysius O’Kelly, Stanhope Forbes, Walter Osborne (his pupil), Joseph Kavanagh, and Nathaniel Hill. Many painted-en plain air and showed the influences of French Realism in their works at the RHA’s Annual Exhibitions. Augustus Burke showed 16 Breton subject paintings at The RHA between 1876 and 1878. His scenes of Breton daily life reflect the influence of the great French Social Realist artist, Jean-François Millet (1814-1875), for example Millet’s paintings, The Angelus of 1857 (Musee d’Orsay, Paris) and The Gleaners, also of 1857 (Musee d’Orsay, Paris). His Breton figures are depicted with the same dignity, workers in the field carrying out their daily tasks. Augustus Burke exhibited a total of 149 works at the Royal Hibernian Academy. A portrait of him, by Alfred Grey, RHA, is to be found together with his own works in The National Gallery of Ireland. The family firm was the Ballantyne Press, which was responsible for printing and publishing much of the literary output of Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832). He was a portrait and genre painter. He was educated at The Edinburgh Academy and after received art tuition from Sir William Allen (1782-1850). He travelled to Paris, Rome and London to complete his education. He exhibited regularly at The Royal Scottish Academy and The Royal Academy in London. He became a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1860. Ballantyne painted an important series of oil paintings showing contemporary artists at work in their studios. This series includes images of William Holman Hunt (1827-1910), William Powell Frith (1819-1909), and Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-1873). Some are held by The National Portrait Galleries of Scotland and England. Other works by the artist can be seen at Aberdeen Art Gallery and The Royal Scottish Academy. Robert Burns (1759-1796), also known as Rabbie Burns, was the National Poet of Scotland. He was one of seven children of William and Agnes Burns. His Father was a tenant farmer and Robert was educated at home. He wrote his first poems at the age of fifteen. His first published work, in 1786, was entitled, Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect. The volume met with critical and popular acclaim. He later wrote, with James Johnson, an anthology entitled, The Scots Musical Museum and select collections of Original Scottish Airs. The latter work contained such well-known songs as My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose, and Auld Lang Syne. His best known poem is Tam O'Shanter of 1795. He wrote over three hundred songs, mostly in the Scottish dialect. His writings enjoy an international appeal and renown. A museum devoted to his life and work is located at his birthplace, Alloway, in South Ayrshire.   This portrait is a version of the iconic image of Robert Burns, painted by Alexander Nasmyth (1758-1840) in 1787 (National Portrait Gallery of Scotland). A later version of circa 1821 is held at The National Portrait Gallery, London. This work is oil on artist's board. It is stamped on the reverse: Reeves, 150 Cheapside (London). Tipperary Sir Claude Francis Barry (1883-1970) was born in London, the son of Sir Edward Barry. He was educated at Harrow Public School. In 1905 he commenced his artistic training under the landscape painter, Sir Alfred East, RA (1844-1913). He moved to Newlyn, Cornwall in 1905 and there worked with Stanhope Forbes(1857-1947) and Laura Knight (1877-1970). He was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists. He painted landscapes on a grand scale and is remembered for his series of nocturne views of London during the years of the Second World War. These he painted in a pointillist technique. In 1945 he moved to Jersey where he remained for the rest of his life. He exhibited 17 works at the Royal Academy, 78 at the Royal Society of British Artists, and 5 at the Royal Society of Artists. He was also a playwright and theatre director. He was born in Kiev. He studied law at The University of Kyiv. He moved to Paris in 1895 and studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. His first exhibited work in Paris was The Travelling Beggar, which was shown at the Salon des Independants in 1896. In 1898 he showed several portraits at this venue. In 1900 he exhibited at the official Salon and received a Medal of Honour for his painting, Amour. He married Jadwiga Splawa-Neyman and they had two sons, but the marriage did not last. Whilst studying at the Academie Julian in Paris in 1899 he met Constance Gore-Booth (1868-1927), the daughter of Sir Henry Gore-Booth of Lissadell House, Co. Sligo. They married in London in 1900. In 1903 the couple moved to Dublin and became members of the artistic and literary society of the time. In 1902, Casimir met the artist George Russell, AE (1867-1935). They shared an interest in the Symbolist Movement. In 1903 the Count, his wife, Constance and AE held their first group exhibition at The Leinster Hall, Molesworth Street. Casimir exhibited twenty-four works. A further exhibition was held at the same venue in August 1904. Casimir showed over eighty works: landscapes and genre scenes. The Count was a member of the committee of The New Irish Arts Club. The club opened in 1907 at Lincoln Place. Other members included Dermod O’Brien (1865-1945), George Russell (1867-1935), and William John Leech (1881-1968). In 1911, Casimir founded The Dublin Repertory Theatre. The company produced a number of Irish plays. In 1913 Casimir left Ireland. He first travelled to Albania, then returned to his native Ukraine. In 1917 he was working in Moscow,where he was appointed Artistic Director of The New Polish Theatre. He was also Professor of Painting at The Polish School of Fine Art. His early works show the influence of The Pre-Raphaelites. He moved to Venice in 1875 and sent paintings of local views to The Royal Academy. His work of circa 1851, titled, The Lady of Shalott, showing the influence of the Pre-Raphaelite Movement, is held at The Wolverhampton Art Gallery. Around 1858 Darvall met Lewis Carroll (1832-1898) who had seen and admired the artist’s work at The Royal Academy. They viewed art exhibitions together, Darvall acting as guide. Carroll commissioned Henry Darvall to paint a portrait of Irene MacDonald, the daughter of the writer George MacDonald. Carroll is recorded as visiting Darvall’s Studio on 1st April 1864. Walter Fawkes (1769-1825) was a Yorkshire landowner, with an estate, Farnley Hall, near Otley. He was MP for The County of York from 1806 to 1807. He was a writer and patron of the arts. He is best remembered for his friendship with J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851). He was his most important patron and probably his closest friend. Turner visited Farnley Hall on many occasions, sometimes staying for months at a time. At one time the collection of Turner’s work, in oil and watercolour, numbered over two hundred pictures. Over the years many of these have pictures have been sold from the collection. These can be seen today in many of the important art galleries of England and America.
