Description: Embossed copper, gilded. Nepal, 15th to 16th century Rare and intricate depiction of the eight-armed androgynous (bi-gender) form of Vishnu and Lakshmi.The right half is Vishnu with the attributes (from above) of a wheel, shell, club and lotus. On the other side, Lakshmi carries a book, lotus, mirror and right at the bottom there is a vessel with the nectar. With a blazing halo and aureola and a lotus decorated pedestal. At the top there is a yoni-lingam symbol, which symbolizes, as the androgynous figure, the unification of the male and female principle. The entire rear wall has a blazing crown. The front is fire gilded with age-related wear, there are remains of red paint. The piece is composed of several parts which can be seen from the reverse that is painted black. Description: Fire gilded bronze. Nepal, 11th century Very early and rare depiction of Vishnu. The attributes are characteristic for him - from the top left the cakra wheel, then the lotus, at the bottom right the shankha shell and at the top the gada club. Vishnu is naked apart from a thin pitambara, but he wears jewellery and a crown. There is a flaming mandorla behind his head. The cult picture is based on a rectangular podium whose front is decorated with flowers and coving.
