Auction Description for Thomaston Place: 2014 SUMMER FEATURE AUCTION
Viewing Notes:
TWO DAY AUCTION: SATURDAY, August 23, 2014 - 11:00 AM and SUNDAY, August 24, 2014 - 11:00 AM. Our exciting summer 2014 auction will feature an incredible array of newly discovered fine art, decorative items, and nautical and historic treasures.
Sale Notes:
On Saturday, we will feature an important bronze sculpture by Frederic Remington, plus paintings by John Frederick Herring, Sr., William Garl Browne, Jr., Jonas Lie, Adolf Johannes Petrus Levolger, George Henry Smillie, Jack Lorimer Gray, Alfred Wordsworth Thompson, George Harvey, Heywood Hardy, and S.F.M. Badger. We will also present fine art from the Medieval and Renaissance periods. From the realm of American folk art will be a monumental 19th c. copper eagle architectural element from a NYC building, an eagle plaque by Maine carver Gregory Luke Collins, and a rare Nantucket basket sewing stand. Several important Native American items will be presented, including a 1766 upstate New York treaty with the Mohawks and a Sioux beaded deer hide pictorial vest, and there will be large selections of antiquities, Oriental antiques, and fine carpets. Featured furniture will include an 18th c. Boston secretary, Welsh oak dresser, early 19th c. Anglo-Indian carved rosewood workstand, and 8 antique tall case clocks. Early silver will include a Chinese gilt filigree box, 18th c. American candlesticks, and an 18th c. Boston porringer.

Description: TIGER MAPLE BUTLER'S CHEST - Late 18th to early 19th c. New England Solid Maple Butler's Chest with overhanging single plank top, drop-front faux upper drawer concealing desk with cabinet, letter drawers and valanced compartments, three graduated drawers below, all with beaded edge, cast brass oval drop bails, boldly shaped skirt and bracketed, slightly swept legs. 40 1/4" x 45" x 19 3/4'. Early inletted repairs to top and side of legs, shrinkage cracks to sides, loss to front edge of compartments. Slip of paper inside indicates this was property of John Langdon Dodge, born in New Marlborough, Mass in 1814, died in Great Barrington, Mass in 1904. He was President of the National Mahaiwe Bank, the Everett Woolen Mills and the Great Barrington Gas and Water Companies.
