Georg Arnold-Graboné, Painting 'View on the Catinaccio', 1930

Lot 2: Georg Arnold-Graboné, Painting 'View on the Catinaccio', 1930

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas Georg Arnold-Graboné (1896-1982) - German landscape and marine painter Signed and dated lower right 'Arnold-Graboné 30' Massive, grey-silver frame Overall dimensions: 109 x 128,5 cm Very good condition Provenance: Swiss private collection Graboné's special palette knife technique impressed Dwight D. Eisenhower as well as Winston Churchill - both took lessons from Georg Arnold-Graboné. His oil paintings fetch more than 3,500 Euros at international auctions The Rosengarten (Italien: Catinaccio) is a mountain range in the Dolomites in Northern Italy. Legend has it that the mountain was originally a rose garden until the midget King Laurin cursed it and turned it into stone. Arnold-Graboné captures the impressive beauty of the mountains in his painting. An alp lies in the foreground with a path leading across it. A hut stands to its right side, a slanted cedar to its left. Forested hill tops string together in the middle ground, opening the view onto the vast mountain range of the Rosengarten. Through the use of the palette knife, Graboné manages to create the rocky structure of the peaks for an almost three-dimensional effect. Though it can be best seen on the mountain tops, the tree and the alp in the foreground also gain modeling and depth through the palette knife application of the paint. The canvas is in very good condition with only minimal traces of framing at the margins. The extraordinary frame shows some overall wear. The overall dimensions including the frame are 109 x 128.5 cm, and the canvas measures 90 x 110.5 cm. The painting is signed and dated in the lower right in the artist's typical engraved manner 'Arnold-Graboné 30'. Georg Arnold-Graboné (1896-1982) Born Georg von Arnold, in Munich, the artist was the son of the district president Wilhelm von Arnold. He became interested in painting at a young age but at the start of the First World War, Arnold was called to duty and served in the same regiment as Adolf Hitler. He survived the war and began studying in Stuttgart, Vienna and later in Berlin under Max Liebermann. After a brief attempt at cubism in the Viennese „Licht-Gruppe", Arnold turned towards more traditional and impressionistic landscape painting. In 1932 he was named professor at the academy in Zurich, and later its rector. He moved to Bavaria in 1938, allegedly following a wish of his former comrade, Adolph Hitler. He was named Chief of the Police in 1938 against his wish, but used this position to warn friends and acquaintances about house searches and arrests. Subsequently, he was arrested by the Gestapo in 1944. Arnold also spent some time in prison camp, but was soon released. In 1951, he met Dwight D. Eisenhower who was stationed in Germany as Supreme Allied Commander of Europe, who had bought one of Arnold's paintings. Eisenhower started taking painting lessons with Arnold and later even flew in twice a week from Paris to take his lessons. Through Eisenhower, Arnold got to know Winston Churchill whom he also instructed in his particular palette knife technique. The two men even spent a two weeks painting holiday on the Isle of Man. After, Arnold's paintings were exhibited all over the world in such locations as the White House in Washington or the Royal Palace in Tokyo. Arnold's paintings can nowadays be found in the family collections of the Kennedys and the Eisenhowers. His artist pseudonym Grabonné is a transformation of the name Gerabronn, his ancestoral village.

The atmospheric work depicts a rolling landscape with a path in the foreground, on which a figure with an ox can be discerned. The silhouette of a castle thrones on a hill in the back. The vast evening sky, delicately coloured by the setting sun, extends through the upper half of the painting. The realistic representation of nature with small, delicate brush strokes, as well as the wide surface of sky, rendered with subtle colour nuances, testify to the virtuosity of this Barbizon painter. The painting is in good condition with light framing marks and fine craquelure along the sky. The colour surface is covered with varnish. The latter is a little yellowed along the left and right margins (hidden by the frame). The back of the board bears the stamp 'LEFRANC frères / Paris' as well as a label with the caption and handwritten inscription 'Louise of Warnstedt / January 1854'. The frame shows slight signs of age and wear. On the front it bears a small plaque inscribed 'Th Rousseau (1812-1867)'. Framed the work measures 30 x 32 cm. The wooden board measures 16.5 x 22 cm. The Barbizon School The Barbizon School consisted of a group of French landscape painters that got together in the middle of the 19th Century, united in the idea of finding a new way of painting, free from academic traditions. The movement met in Barbizon, a small French village in the forest of Fontainebleau, wherefrom one went into nature to paint under the open sky and capture the results on canvas. The artists' colony was founded in 1830 by Théodore Rousseau (1812-1867) and existed until 1870; during this time it influenced the landscape painting all over Europe. Characteristic of the paintings of the Barbizon School are the small format, the remarkable realism of the representation and the creation of the sketches in the open air.

Beischläger' and inscribed 'Rosen' ('Roses') Dimensions, stretcher frame: 36.2 x 40 cm Very good condition Provenance: Austrian private collection Floral still lifes, especially roses, are a recurring subject in the work of Emil Beischläger; similar paintings fetch up to 1,700 euros at international auctions This classic modern oil painting 'Rosen' ('Roses') of the Austrian artist Emil Beischläger (1897-1977) impresses by the bright colours of the flowers. Placed against a dark background, the roses painted in pastose colours literally jump out of the painting, becoming a plastic quality. The table top and the draped cloth on the side give the composition an additional spatial component. 'Rosen' shows allusions to the New Objectivity, which was established in the 1920s, especially in German-speaking countries. However, there still is a subjective aesthetic component in the foreground. The art historian Herbert Stephan once appropriately remarked on Beischläger's works: 'A painting by Emil Beischläger gets its quality, when one lives with it. As a charismatic ornament in a cultivated room, it becomes the spiritual and aesthetic center of it. Beautiful in its picturesque instrumentation and confident in its craftsmanship, Beischläger's paintings convey his gaze, making his lived experience comprehensible.' The painting is signed on the back of the stretcher probably by the hand of the artist 'E. Beischläger' and inscribed 'Rosen'. It is in good condition, showing only minimal signs of age. The dimensions of the stretcher frame are 36.2 x 40 cm. Beischläger Emil (1897-1977) The Viennese painter Emil Beischläger mainly painted landscapes, portraits and still lifes. Description: Watercolour and pencil on paper Germany, around 1930 Edvard Frank (1909-1972) - German painter and graphic artist Verso with estate stamp 'Edvard Frank' Verso with catalogue raisonné number EF002870 An early work by the artist Sheet dimensions: 58.2 x 47.7 cm Provenance: German private collection A typical work by the German painter of the 'lost generation' Edvard Frank, whose works currently enjoy increasing popularity; Frank's watercolours fetch over 3.000 euros at international auctions This watercolour by the German painter and graphic artist Edvard Frank is an early work by the artist, whose oeuvre is characterised by erotic illustrations and nude drawings. The sheet shows an embracing pair of lovers. The nude bodies are jotted in the artist's quintessentially free manner and roughly coloured. Despite the somewhat crude manner of representation, the scene nevertheless appears very sensual. The critic Heinz Schöffler once said about Frank's works: 'One never tires of looking at the best of his works. Despite of being depicted in clear forms, they propose a conundrum more than they reveal. Not least, that's the feature that makes Frank's works so pleasant. They make us happy.' The sheet is in appealing condition with slight marginal blemishes. The paper shows creases and is a little browned. The man's left hand shows a tiny hole. The back of the sheet bears the estate stamp 'Edvard Frank'. Verso there is also the catalogue raisonné number EF002870. The sheet measures 58.2 x 47.7 cm. Edvard Frank (1909-1972) The German painter Edvard Frank is considered a prominent representative of the 'lost generation'. This group consisted of artists, musicians and writers from the years 1890 to 1914, whose works were classified as 'degenerate art' during the period of nationalism. Mostly, it included the second generation of expressionist artists, as well as artists from the New Objectivity. The art historian Rainer Zimmermann coined the term of 'expressive realism', which described some of them. The artists of the 'lost generation', in fact, had no unified style, but worked both in the expressive and realistic, as well as in the representational and abstract manner. Edvard Frank was a student of Karl Hofer at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. After the Second World War, he joined the Trier Secession and had increasing success with exhibitions in Germany. His favorite subjects were erotic subjects, showing an influence of the classical canon of forms. Lately, the works of the 'lost generation' have again increasing success on the international art market.

It shows a composition of gooseberries, red currants and cherries draped around a blue and white porcelain bowl filled with strawberries. The berries are perfectly staged in front of a dark, shadowed background. Garnier, without doubt a master of the still life genre, has created a work which testifies to the highest artistic virtuosity. The fruits, branches and leaves are captured with the finest brushwork. The translucent quality of the berries emphasizes Garnier's craftsmanship. Equally remarkable is the manner in which the cherry stalks are rendered - they exhibit a very modern look for the time. The vibrant shades of red are characteristic for the artist's oeuvre. A similar, slightly smaller work titled 'Cerises et Groseilles à Maquereau', signed by the artist and dated 1644, is held in the collection of the Musée du Louvre in Paris. The painting is in good condition according to its age with slight framing marks. The canvas is not relined but waxed. There is light colour loss along the lower border. Along the sides the canvas shows some material loss. The colour surface is coated with a varnish. There are several old restorations in the dark background, not affecting the imagery. François Garnier (ca. 1600-1672) François Garnier came from an artist and decorator family working in Fontainebleau. In Paris he opened a studio, which specialized in the still life genre - inspired by the Flemish and Dutch tradition. Besides painting, he successfully worked as an art dealer and was in close contact with the artists of the Paris neighbourhood of Saint- Germain, which was a well-known artist community at that time. Through the marriage with the widow Marie Guilbert he became the stepfather and mentor of Louise Moillon, one of the most famous French still-life painters of the 17th Century. Garnier's works are characterised by a rejection of all ornamental and purely decorative effects. He was fascinated by the simple reality and painted mainly compositions with red fruits such as strawberries or cherries.

The work's particular charm derives from the contrast between the very thinly applied paint, which lets pencil sketch through here and there, and the thick impasto dabs, which highlights individual blossoms and gives the image a certain depth. The painting by Ernst Huber is in good condition with slight marginal blemishes. There is partially light colour and material loss along the edges. The work is signed lower left 'E. HVBER'. The board measures 54 x 42.5 cm. Ernst Huber (1895-1960) Ernst Huber was first trained as a typesetter in Vienna. He practiced his profession for a few years before working as a lithographer. At the same time, he attended a course by Otto Prutscher at the Vienna School of Applied Arts. Huber learned to paint as an autodidact, he exhibited his first works in 1919. They attracted the attention of Josef Hoffmann, who introduced Huber to the sculptor Gustinus Ambrosi and admitted him to the artist group 'Kunstschau', whose members included artists such as Gustav Klimt and Oskar Kokoschka. In 1932 Huber became a member of the Vienna Secession, in 1935 he was awarded the Austrian State Prize for painting. The artist's initially sombre colour palette brightened gradually and finally exhibited bright and intense colours. Landscapes from Austria but also from distant lands, which he discovered during his travels, occupy a central position in Huber's oeuvre. Works by Ernst Huber are held in the Galerie Belvedere, the Leopold Museum and the Graphische Sammlung Albertina in Vienna, as well as the Upper Austrian Landesmuseum in Linz.

Description: Pencil and watercolour on paper Austria, 1920s Oskar Laske (1874-1951) - Austrian painter, graphic artist, illustrator and architect Monogrammed upper right 'OL' Titled upper right 'Gepresste Verlobung' [Forced Engagement] Small sketch on the back Dimensions: 13.6 x 18.8 cm Provenance: from an Austrian private collection A small, humorous work by Oskar Laske in a joyful narrative style and strong colours; similar works fetch up to 4,500 euros on the international auction market This little work by the Austrian artist Oskar Laske shows a humorous scene, exhibiting the typical joyfulness of Laske's style. The work is sketched and coloured with the artist's fast, versed strokes. It depicts a father who - as the title already suggests - wants to betroth his eldest daughter against her will. The husband-to-be is seemingly not too taken by the idea either. The mother is crying with her hands in front of her face while the little sister is cheekily laughing up her sleeve. The dynamic contours and bold colours emphasise the playful nature of the work. The sketch is in appealing condition, the paper is a little yellowed and shows some minor creases. There is minor loss of material to the surface of the paper on the blue pinafore. The work is monogrammed upper right 'OL' and titled 'Gepresste Verlobung'. The sheet measures 13.6x 18.8 cm. Oskar Laske (1874-1951) As a youth Oskar Laske was taught by the landscape painter Anton Hlavacek. After studying architecture under Otto Wagner at the Vienna Academy, Laske worked as a freelance architect, and from 1904 onwards primarily as a painter. He painted mostly watercolours during various trips throughout Europe and North Africa. His favourite subjects were landscapes, piazzas and genre scenes. During the First World War, Laske was also active as a war painter. The cheerful narrative style and an expressive colour range are characteristic of the artist's works. Laske was also a graphic artist and book illustrator, being a member of the Hagenbund from 1907 and the Vienna Secession from 1924. In 1928, Laske joined the Vienna Künstlerhaus. Lucas van Leyden Circle, Painting 'Noli Me Tangere', 16th C

Lot 45: Lucas van Leyden Circle, Painting 'Noli Me Tangere', 16th C

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on wooden panel Flanders or Germany, 16th Century Circle of Lucas van Leyden (1494-1533) -Dutch painter and engraver Stylistic influence of the Danube School Subtle colour palette Beautiful, hand painted frame from the 18th Century Overall dimensions, framed: 112 x 86 cm Provenance: Southern German Private Collection A very well kept Panel Painting from the 16th Century for connoisseurs This precious panel painting of the 16th Century shows the Biblical Scene when the risen Christ appears to Mary Magdalene as described in the Gospel according to John. Christ is depicted to the left; to the right Mary Magdalene is kneeling, with two more women standing behind her. In the background to the left behind Christ a ruin is discernible; the right background is filled with exotic trees, and palm trees. Above the scene stretches a cloudy sky. The 16th century artist shows this scene slightly altered than described in the gospel, since the women next to Mary Magdalene are Johanna and Mary, the mother of Jacobus, which are told to have come to the grave at the first day after Christ's death to embalm his body with aromatic ointments but were not present when Christ appeared to Mary Magdalene. The women are dressed in 16th century garments, her faces are distinctively European, even slightly Flemish. Mary Magdalene has fallen to her knees, adoringly, almost swooning, with the ointment vessels next to her. Christ is adorned with a red, flowing gown, a broad brimmed hat and a spate on which he leans, indicating his disguise as a gardener. His left hand is raised in a gesture of teaching. Christ's face appears slightly peasant-like, as are those of the women, something that can be noticed in the works by Lucas van Leyden as well as in the works by artists of the Danube School. All these have tried to translocate the biblical scenes into the here and now of the 16th century to create a stronger immediacy. Just like others before him, the artist of this painting, who presumably came from the circle of Lucas van Leyden and has also been incluenced by Albrecht Altdorfer, has placed the scene into the world he knew. He found orientation in paintings by other artists with the same motif such as the Noli Me Tangere by Hans Baldung Grien that he painted in 1539 and where Christ is also shown leaning on a spate and wearing a red coat. The style, in which the three figures have been painted, is very different from that of the trees in the background, that are shown in a very detailed manner. The collaboration for this painting of two artists is possible, as it was very common at this time. The panel painting is in good, condition in relation to its age. There is some craquelure visible, yet secured by a layer of varnish. Due to dryness, the paint has arched at some small areas and there are few, minor flake-offs and touch-ups. The panel is jointed from several, thin planks and there are two small cracks, which are restored and secured. The two cracks are visible at the front. Along the edges are traces of a framing. The overall dimensions of the painting are framed 112 x 86 cm, unframed 90.5 x 63.5 cm. The frame is a very beautiful one from the 18th Century and has been hand painted.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on paper, mounted on cardboard Germany, around 1850 Circle of Adolph von Menzel (1815-1905) - Berlin painter and draftsman Annoted by an unknown hand 'Ad Menzel' Verso label with artist´s name 'Adolph von Menzel' and title 'Lichtdurchfluteter Hinterhof' [Light-flooded backyard] Dimensions, framed: 42.5 x 52.5 cm; dimension cardboard: 24 x 33.5 cm Good condition Provenance: From a German private collection A fine oil painting from the circle of one of the most significant German realist painters of the 19th Century This oil painting from the circle of the Berlin painter and draftsman Adolph von Menzel shows a rural homestead. It depicts a backyard planted with trees and bushes, and a group of buildings in the background. A forested area stretches beyond the gate on the right. The view seems casually chosen, the subject matter appears simple - features which characterize Menzel's oeuvre. The pre-impressionist brushwork with which the leaves are indicated and the free manner of painting, which is especially noticeable along the roofs of the houses, are further characteristics of the work by one of the most significant German realists of the 19th Century. The painting is in good condition with light framing marks and a tiny material loss in the lower left corner. The work annoted lower left 'Ad Menzel'. The back of the additional cardboard bears a stamp from the auction house 'Heinrich Hahn / Frankfurt'. The frame shows slight signs of age and wear. On the front it bears a small plaque inscribed 'Adolph v. Menzel (1815-1905)'. Framed the work measures 42.5 x 52.5 cm. The wooden board measures 24 x 33.5. Adolph von Menzel (1815-1905) Adolph Menzel was born in Breslau as a son of a lithographer. In 1830, his family moved to Berlin, probably to offer a more adequate education for the highly talented son. Sadly, however, the father died only two years later and now the young Adolph had to take over the father's business to provide for the family. Next to his work, the young Menzel managed to attend courses at the Berlin Art Academy, which disappointed him, however, so that he decided to study on his own. In 1839 Menzel had his first commission, an illustration of the biography of Frederic the Great, which made him well known to a broader audience. Next to his numerous drawings, Menzel then began to create paintings, as well and received in 1861 the commission to paint the crowning portrait of Whillhelm I. Due to his increasing fame, Menzel was awarded with many honours, such as the membership of the Royal Academy of the Arts, of which he became a professor in 1856 (although he never taught there). In 1905 Menzel died and received a stately funeral by Wilhelm II. Often Menzel is described as the perfect Prussian artist which can be seen as a certain paradox to the artist's life as the artist, who only had the height of 1.40 m, never became a soldier. Also, the artist described in his oeuvre the life of the poor as in his paintingEisenwalzwerk,1972-75.Works by Menzel can be found in many institutions such as the Nationalgalerie in Berlin, the Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen in Dresden, the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne and the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
