Garden William Fraser (signs as William Fraser Garden) (British, 1856-1921) Holywell Church signed lower mid left

Lot 7: Garden William Fraser (signs as William Fraser Garden) (British, 1856-1921) Holywell Church signed lower mid left

Description: Garden William Fraser (signs as William Fraser Garden) (British, 1856-1921) Holywell Church signed lower mid left watercolour h:28.50 w:39.50 cm Garden William Fraser was born in 1856, he often signed as "W F Garden". Exhibited under the name of William Fraser Garden. He was the fourth, and most celebrated, of seven artistic Scottish brothers. The brothers were educated at Bedford School, where they were taught by Bedford schoolmaster, Bradford Rudge (1805-1885) who was a distinguished landscape artist in both oils and watercolours. Rudge exhibited at the Royal Academy, taught at the school and also took private pupils until his death, and both Garden and his brother, George Gordon Fraser, were his star pupils. William Fraser Garden loved the River Ouse in all its moods, particularly the stretch between Bedford and St Ives. His paintings have an almost photographic quality in both fineness of his work and the tranquillity that he achieves in his landscapes. He painted Britain's oldest inn, The Ferry Boat at Holywell, several times along with other buildings on the course of the Ouse. His brother Arthur Anderson Fraser founded the White Cockade Jacobite Club there. Garden exhibited at the Royal Academy several times and at the Society of British Arts, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, but tragically did not achieve the success in his lifetime that he so longed for, and richly deserved. His home was The House in the Fields, in the beautiful village of Hemingford Abbbots, Cambridgeshire, until his death in 1921- sadly he died in poverty at the start of the 20th Century.

Lot 11: Henry Yeend King (British, 1855-1924)- River Scene with Trees signed bottom right

In 1879 Henry Yeend King was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists and in 1886 he was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, of which he later became Vice-President. The Times obituary of 12 June 1924 wrote: "Mr Henry John King, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours died in London ... His experience of French art - particularly the influence of the Realist and Impressionist schools informed King's mature stlye. So although his rustic genre scenes are typically Victorian, his technique of working in plein-air and infusing his scenes with bold and often surprising colours - shows the influence of French art". Yeend King had a long and successful career, with many exhibitions in London, Europe and the USA, wining medals in Paris, Berlin and Chicago. His landscapes are of rural idylls with pretty farm girls (often using his daughter, Lilian, as a model). He was sometimes referred to as 'Milkmaid' for his use of girls in his paintings. He was also a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Oil-Colours and was a frequent exhibitor at all the major exhibition halls; showing 115 works at the RBA, 38 at the RI and 94 at the Royal Academy.

Edward Walker - Hemingford Abbots, Huntingdon

Lot 30: Edward Walker - Hemingford Abbots, Huntingdon

Description: Edward Walker (British, 19th Century) b.1879 Hemingford Abbots, Huntingdon signed & dated 1944 pencil sketch, Other Notes: Edward Walker was Head of Scarborough School of Art. He painted in the St Ives and Fenstanton area. At the outbrake of the Second World War an ambitious scheme was set up to employ artists on the home front. The results wa a collection of more than 1500 watercolours and drawings that make up a fascinating record of British lives and landscapes at a time of imminent change. Recording Britain was the brainchild of Sir Kenneth Clarkm who saw it as an extension of the Official War Artist scheme. By choosing watercolour painting as the medium of record, Clark hoped that the scheme would also help to preserve this characteristic English art form. With money from the Pilgrim Trust ( a fund provided by American millionaire Edward Harkness) the scheme's administrators comissioned some of the country's finest watercolour painters, including Sitr William Russell Flint, Charles Knight, Rowland Hilder and John Piper. Other younfer artists - some fresh out of art school (such as Phylis Dimond) - were invited to submit pictures and were paid a small fee for each work accepted.
