Leaping reindeer masthead weathervaneRochester, New York area, circa 1860

Lot 537: Leaping reindeer masthead weathervaneRochester, New York area, circa 1860

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Sheet brass and wrought iron, original weathered verdigris patina, 17 x 24 inches, height of iron rod, 28 inches, with metal mount for wall hanging. This was originally one of a pair of silhouetted brass reindeer made to adorn the mastheads of the schooner Monterey, of the Reindeer Fleet, which sailed on Lake Superior during the second half of the nineteenth century. It is accompanied by two early twentieth century newspaper clippings from The Rochester Herald, Rochester, New York, entitled "Brass Reindeer Has History," and "Sketch of Old Ship Unearthed." One of these is inscribed with the date 1913 stated that "The Monterey, however, was distinguished from the other ships because of the peculiar mast head she carried. Captain Rees went to the expense of buying a large sheet of brass, from which he had cut two reindeer in the act of leaping. The reindeer cost $22 each and measured about two feet in length. These he placed on the fore and main masts. They were polished daily and presented a unique appearance on a bright day, when they would glisten far across the waters. Pilots on other ships always know the approach of Captain Rees' schooner by the glistening top. In a severe storm one of the reindeer-the one on the main-mast was lost. Captain Rees retired from active sea service in 1879 and bought a farm in Clayton, where he stayed until his death in 1899." An intriguing possibility that Captain David Rees may have actually fashioned this masthead-weathervane himself is suggested by a listing in the Daily American Directory of the City of Rochester, for 1849-50, p. 202, which records a David Rees as a Blacksmith.PROVENANCE: David S. Rees, Captain of the schooner Monterey of The Reindeer Fleet, Clayton, NY; to his son, Arthur D. Rees, Rochester, NY; to his son Arthur D. Rees, Jr; Private collection; Raccoon Creek Antiques; Alan Katz; David A. Schorsch and Eileen M. Smiles.
