YURI PAVLOVICH ANNENKOV - Mixed Media on paper, mounted on board

Lot 11: YURI PAVLOVICH ANNENKOV - Mixed Media on paper, mounted on board

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Yuri Pavlovich Annenkov (Russian, 1889-1974). "Constructivist Composition (Reklame-Verkauf)". Mixed Media on paper, mounted on board. 1921. Signed and dated in pen in the image, lower right. Composed with oil, watercolor, gouache, and crayon, painted on a single sheet of newspaper ("Le Nouveau Journal de Strasbourg" October 1920 issue). The sheet is mounted to a firm but flexible contemporary board. Provenance: Private collection, Kentfield, California; formerly collection George Wittenborn, Wittenborn Art Books, New York City, sold in the 1950s; acquired by Wittenborn during or shortly after the second of the Adolfo Muller-Ury estate sales at the Plaza Art Galleries in New York City in December, 1947. The second sale included material from consignors in addition to the Muller-Ury estate. It is doubtful that the picture was owned by Muller-Ury; rather, a different consignor in the second Plaza sale. As the noted art historian Stephen Conrad has indicated about this painting, "The fact that it [our example] appeared in the second of his [Muller-Ury's] estate sales at the Plaza Art Galleries in New York in December 1947 is not proof of his ownership, the reason being that many lots in these sales were from other vendors...It remains highly unlikely that he [Muller-Ury] would have owned anything as modern as this constructivist work, as he is on record in the 1940s as saying, 'The saddest thing on God's earth is modern art?'". While Annenkov is best known for his portraits, like other Russian artists of his time he was influenced by the Constructivist movement, the artistic and architectural force that originated in Russia in 1919. Our rare and superb example of Annenkov?s Constructivist oeuvre was painted at the froth of that movement. Overall size: (board) 17 5/8 x 13 3/4 in. (448 x 349 mm). Image size: 17 5/8 x 12 5/8 in. (448 x 321 mm). [24951] |35000| {R100}

Condition Report: Composed with oil, watercolor, gouache, and crayon, painted on a single sheet of newspaper ("Le Nouveau Journal de Strasbourg" October 1920 issue). The sheet is mounted to a firm but flexible contemporary board.

Literature/catalogue raisonne: Karshan 4. Provenance: The estate of John and Valere Butterwick, Kewanee, Illinois. Exceedingly rare, perhaps unique, proof. Unknown to Karshan. As he states,"Kneeling is the second drypoint of only three that the artist executed ["Kneeling," "Bending," "Angelica"]. The original copper plates [of these three] were discovered by the artist's widow in 1966 at his atelier in Woodstock, New York. These plates were in sufficiently good condition to permit posthumous editions to be printed, since only one life-time proof was known of "Bending," two of "Angelica," and none of "Kneeling." These three editions were printed in New York by Miss Judith Foster in 1967, under the supervision of the artist's estate." Donald Karshan, "Archipenko: The Sculpture and Graphic Art." MILTON AVERY [BY OR ATTRIB] - Oil on canvas

Lot 18: MILTON AVERY [BY OR ATTRIB] - Oil on canvas

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Milton Avery [by or attrib] (American, 1885-1965). "Mountain Trees". Oil on canvas. 1960. Signed and dated, lower left. Very good condition. Provenance: Through Mark Rothko; Private collection, New Canaan, Connecticut. An impressive example of Avery's landscape oeuvre. For a similar composition (1962) by Avery, please see "Mountain Landscape," sale at Bonhams & Butterfields New York, December 2, 2009, lot passed on presale estimates of $125,000/150,000. Avery's work is seminal to American abstract painting?while his images are clearly representational, they focus on color relations and are not concerned with creating the illusion of depth as most conventional Western painting since the Renaissance has. Avery was often thought of as an American Matisse, especially because of his colorful and innovative landscape paintings. His poetic, bold, and creative use of drawing and color set him apart from the more conventional painting of his era. Early in his career his work was considered too radical for being too abstract; when Abstract Expressionism became dominant his work sometimes was overlooked as being too representational. ? Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York. Image size: 18 x 24 in. (457 x 610 mm). Frame size: 21 1/4 x 27 1/4 in. (540 x 692 mm). [25238] |8000| {R100}

JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT - Original offset lithograph record jacket & record

Lot 28: JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT - Original offset lithograph record jacket & record

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Jean-Michel Basquiat (American, 1960-1988). "Rammellzee vs. K-Rob". Original offset lithograph record jacket & record. 1983. Signed in black marker in Basquiat's crown logo, upper center. Edition of 500 (original pressing). Thick jacket paper. Fine impression. Jacket in very good condition; some minor creasing lower right and upper right; vinyl and sleeve in fine condition. Extremely scarce and highly sought after. Due to the rarity of its original pressing, this album has been called the Holy Grail of rap records. A search of auction records going back 28 years yields no signed versions. The album contains "Beat Bop," a hip hop single by American rappers Rammellzee and K-Rob, produced by Basquiat and originally released in 1983 by record label Tartown. Initially distributed merely as a test pressing, it is notable for being featured in the hip-hop documentary film "Style Wars" and having the cover, as well as the record label (both sides), designed by Basquiat. The result of a disagreement between Rammellzee and Basquiat, the track has been cited as having an influence on artists such as the Beastie Boys and many experimental hip hop artists, due to its chaotic, abstract sound. Overall size: 12 1/4 x 12 1/4 in. (311 x 311 mm). Image size: 12 1/4 x 12 1/4 in. (311 x 311 mm). [28038] |3000| {R100}

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Jean-Michel Basquiat & Andy Warhol (Americans, 20th Century). "Warhol * Basquiat Paintings [original first printing]". Original color offset lithograph poster. 1985. Signed by both artists in ink, lower left and lower right. Edition unknown, presumed small. Smooth cream medium weight wove paper. The full sheet. Fine impression. Good condition; colors very good; some creasing in the image; one tack hole top margin and one bottom margin. The legendary, iconic, and famous poster of two of the greatest artists of the latter part of the 20th Century, perhaps the most poignant and enduring image of the 1980's NYC art scene. We could locate only 11 sales of this poster in the past 28 years, with only five of these being signed. The auction record for a signed example is $6,600 at Christie's New York, May 1, 2007, lot #839. The image is by Michael Halsband. The show displayed the collaborative paintings that Warhol and Basquiat worked on from 1984-1985. These works were the culmination of their friendship, one which began in the late 70's. Eventually, the two began work on the paintings that would constitute the bulk of this exhibition. But the process was not without conflict. Warhol, whose work ethic was legendary, grew frustrated with Basquiat's erratic appearances and the two worked very little on the paintings at the same time. The show was a financial and critical failure and marked the end of their friendship. The full title of the poster is: Tony Shafrazi * Bruno Bischofberger Present: Warhol * Basquiat Paintings, September 14 through October 19, 1985, 163 Mercer Street New York Overall size: 19 x 12 in. RUDOLF BAUER - Pencil drawing on paper

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Rudolf Bauer (German, 1881 - 1953). "Non-Objective Solitary Confinement Prison Drawing [No.8]". Pencil drawing on paper. 1938. Signed with the initial in pencil, lower right. Drawn on "brown paper bag" paper. Provenance: Estate of the Artist. A highly important example of Bauer?s rare ?prison drawings.? Among them, the ?solitary confinement prison drawings? are of the utmost rarity. As Wikipedia states, ?during his time in prison [1938], he created dozens of non-objective drawings on scavenged scraps of paper.? Bauer was in prison for several months. Initially he was held in solitary confinement. He created the present drawing, our example, during the solitary confinement period. He then was moved to the general prison population and allowed to perform office clerking functions. During this time he created yet more drawings, generally more refined and on office stationery, many with typewriter type on the verso. These drawings, while still rare, are obtainable, whereas the ?solitary confinement? drawings are virtually unobtainable. The complete text of the Wikipedia article dealing with this period: ?In 1938, upon his return from an exhibition of his work in Paris, Bauer was arrested by the Nazis for his "degenerate" art and for speculating on the black market ? meaning selling his work to [Solomon] Guggenheim. The previous year Bauer?s work had been included in the infamous Degenerate Art show in Munich, organized by the Nazis to show all the deviant, abstract art. In spite of this Bauer had refused to move from his home country. Upon his arrest Bauer was held in a Gestapo prison for several months, as [Hilla] Rebay and Guggenheim worked to free him. After several false starts, he was finally released unconditionally in August 1938. During his time in prison, he created dozens of non-objective drawings on scavenged scraps of paper. He spent the next months getting his paperwork in order and made the difficult decision to leave his homeland, emigrating to the United States in July 1939, just months before the beginning of World War II.?. Description: Romare Bearden (American, 1911-1988). "Artists - 79 [Full title: Artists - 79: International Play Group Celebrates the International Year of the Child. United Nations, New York City, May 24 - June 14, 1979]". Color silkscreen poster. 1979. Signed in ink beneath the image, lower right. Numbered and editioned in ink, lower left. Signed in the screen, lower left. Print #89 from the edition of 100. Silver metallic foil paper. Full margins. Fine impression. Very good condition overall; several unobtrusive handling marks in the margins; very minor creasing at top right corner. Provenance: The Del Rio Collection, Southampton, NY. An extremely rare Bearden image. No auction records located. Until our example, unknown to Janet Wall (Jerald Melberg Gallery, Charlotte, North Carolina), author of the forthcoming catalogue raisonne on Bearden's work. According to the Bearden Foundation, this screenprint poster was undoubtedly derived from a collage created by Bearden in the late 1970s. Four years later, the same collage was used to create the screenprint "Easter Procession" also offered in the present auction. Close inspection reveals subtle differences between the poster and the print: the absence of the blue color above and below the wrists of the second figure from the left; the tan color extending to the top of the foot on the first figure to the left in the poster, not so in the print, etc. So while the images are substantially similar, they are not identical. Dimensions: image 20 1/16 x 16 1/8 in.; image with letters: 27 1/2 x 16 1/8 in.; sheet: 28 x 20 1/8 in. Image copyright ? Licensed by VAGA, New York, NY. Overall size: 28 x 20 in. (711 x 508 mm). Description: R. A. Blakelock (American, 1847-1919). "Early Morning with Two Canoes". Oil on canvas. c1869-1885. Signed lower left. Old lining and heavy craquelure. Old label on back of frame. Provenance: Private collection, University Park, Texas. The present painting, a prime example of Ralph Albert Blakelock's signature style, was possibly painted during one of his western sojourns between 1869 and 1872, which yielded a group of Indian encampment paintings. Blakelock was to earn a reputation for nocturnal, misty scenes, especially moonlit landscapes, large oak trees, and Indian encampments. At least by the late 1860s, he developed what became his signature expression: quiet, moody, nocturnal scenes accented with light, and trees silhouetted against the sky. He was both a late exponent of the Hudson River School of painting and also of the American West, foreshadowing the romantic, visionary, and modern tendencies that marked the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries. He had a labor-intensive technique, which was building up of multi layers of thick paint, scraping some away, and adding more to build a complex tonality. Image size: 18 x 24 in. (457 x 610 mm). Frame size: 21 x 28 1/4 in. (533 x 718 mm). [25253] |6000| {R100}
