Description: A Fabergé silver and enamel-mounted leather desk blotter, by workmaster Johan Viktor Aarne, St Petersburg 1892, the rectangular leather cover with applied silver decoration of a lyre, a cornucopia of flowers and trailing laurel with scrolling bands enamelled with presentation inscription, surmounted by a coronet and enamelled monogrammed cartouche, all within a finely engraved border of scrolling foliage with two allegorical vignettes of cherubs, the corner circular cartouche with enamelled monogram, silk interior, 37 x 30 cm This desk portfolio was presented to Uyli Ivanovich by his past mature students to commemorate twenty-five years as a teacher and composer at the University of Kazan in 1892. Former students of this highly regarded Russian university include Leo Tolstoy and Vladimir Lenin. Johan Viktor Aarne was apprenticed to Johan Erik Hellsten in Tampere, Finland. He worked for Fabergé from 1880 to 1890 in August Wilhelm Holmström's workshop. He then moved back to Finland for one year to obtain his workmaster title. In 1891 he returned to St Petersburg to work exclusively for Fabergé until 1904, using his Cyrillic signature B.A. In 1904 he sold his workshop and returned to Finland where he continued to work for another thirty years.
