Spotted Pigs

Ships From: Philadelphia, PA US

Description: Pigs are an example of Jung Hur’s taking a thing, shifting it to an image, using it as a symbol with personal meaning, and then placing that symbol is the public space of culture. In “Spotted Pigs,” the pigs have already been transformed into piggy banks - which stand for thriftiness and even how we educate our children to learn how to handle - and save - money responsibly. In other words, the piggy bank not only is recognized in society, but it has ethical meaning in capitalist culture. And it reaches from the peaks of culture and power to the very way we educate children. Hur is not commenting on that system, however; instead, he is trying to reveal how culture operates with a motion from specifics towards universals… and back. Jung Hur’s studio, after all, is on his farm where he raises pigs.

Green Dot Gap

Ships From: Philadelphia, PA US

Description: While Jung Hur’s “gap” works can be seen in many ways - and the artist invites us to celebrate our own perspectives - this piece seems to balance a paper-like flat presence with the keyhole forms. Below the paper-like presence, however, is a rich, sense of painterly space with thick and brushy painterly forms. The “green” of the title hints at the dominance of the green and our propensity to see this as something like “a constellation of green dots with a few other colors as well.” (It also hints at a title’s ability to affect our expectations.) This is not a gesture about our being limited by our perceptions, quite the opposite. The artist is here acknowledging that we can see something with clarity but allow for variation within it. Some viewers will see this as a painting. Others may see a drawing. But virtually all of us will see much of both in the same place, whichever we let the scales tilt.

Gap Folio

Ships From: Philadelphia, PA US

Description: The word “folio” in the title refers to the traditional large parchment or paper for art or printing. The white form we see lifting off from the lower left edge of the work plays off of the real paper on which the work is made. There is no simple truth to the work, but its systems logic hints at an easy reading of the work’s own making: We can imagine, for example, that the folio form is this piece of paper, that the black is the table and the grayed white is the floor below. This reading shouldn’t be taken as the only reading, since that would shortchange the dynamic sense Jung Hur imparts to his works physically, visually, energetically, metaphorically and symbolically. They are, after all, invitations to consider varied perspective - particularly our own.

Gap123

Ships From: Philadelphia, PA US

Description: This work leads a group of Jung Hur’s “gap” series that pops with apparent clarity. The layers - white on black on white - shift between being the ground (like paper) for the images and the layers between which they flow. The shifting groups of keyhole forms push the idea of associated similarity: The forms of the top layer, for example, hold together despite being green, yellow, blue, red, black and gray, etc. The puce forms, similarly, hold together enough so that we hardly notice their varied shapes and sizes. While many things are happening in this work, in Gap 123, Jung Hur takes us on an easy path from literal layers to metaphorical ones.

Gap 2

Ships From: Philadelphia, PA US

Description: Gap 2 plays with the underlying drama of the brush and liquid paint to create a visual drama between a drawing that was made flat and a painting made on the wall. The thickness of the pushed-around paint hints at work made flat, while the drippiness of paint tries to stand it back up. This conversation of standing up or lying down is elegantly framed by the silver grid of the keyhole symbols: They don’t solve the possibilities, but instead double down on the logic: The literalness of the grid holds the sense of the flat surface of the work, while the reflectiveness of the silver pushes past the weighty paint into the sense of light and perception of the immaterial.

Gap 1

Ships From: Philadelphia, PA US

Description: Jung Hur’s “gap” works are rich in process and systems logic. Combining these contemporary art strategies with work on paper, the “gap” works, in fact, benefit from being considered drawings. This may seem counterintuitive because these are far more layered than the work of most painters. But the “gap” works have the luscious exploratory looseness of contemporary drawing. As well, these works have meditative braininess that balances the richness of the surface. They also set the context for seeing the lively brushwork as calligraphic, despite the scale and sweep of the bold artist’s brush marks. Context requires perspective, and perspective requires distance. That distance, among other layered notions, is the “gap.”

Poppies

Ships From: Philadelphia, PA US

Description: This painting balances the intentional tension between the muscularity of the big, bold painting and the particularly tender floral forms. The flower forms relate to, are made out of Hur’s SIGNATURE keyhole forms, which ultimately come into focus when the viewer switches from seeing an object to taking a closer look at the image. The behind-the-scenes quality of the forms and flowers offers up a subtle and deeply nuanced sense of almost biological complexity. When we return to the clarity of the original high contrast imagery, only to wander off into the jungles of perception, experience, and meaning. This work plays witty but philosophical games with ideas like the field of the painting and a field of flowers, a connection that pushes past the expected horizon line. The physical reality and dynamic force of this floral still life insist on the living presence of the maker, the viewer, the actions of art and the vital substance of the subject.

White Constellation

Ships From: Philadelphia, PA US

Description: While some of Jung Hur’s paintings are clear about contrasting the spatial orientation of traditional Western and Asian painting with Modernism, this painting creates an experience that is most easily understood in terms of postwar American abstraction or early European modernism. It is spatially vague, but it clearly engages the viewer’s body - vertical and bilaterally symmetrical. The energy of the clouds of symbols has a vital essence, which is both like a person but also a literal constellation. Jung isallowing us to put the human body in a cosmological perspective. While the potential for philosophical ideas from this painting is both poignant and potentially endless, the work is a potent painterly object on its own. It’s like a moment of mental confetti.

White Constellation 2

Ships From: Philadelphia, PA US

Description: The constellation paintings are about how things look different when they are part of groups. A thing with a particular shape can still become part of another shape that is much larger. Sometimes the larger shape is more complex, but not necessarily (imagine, for example, the shape of a cloud versus the shape of fog). Sometimes the smaller shape is more defined, but sometimes the larger shape comes into focus with more clarity. Here, my keyhole shapes become part of a larger system. The keyholes represent individual perspectives, so there are many ways to understand this painting, and there are many possible meanings to find. I am particularly drawn to the liveliness of this kind of scene. It is effervescent, dynamic and alive. With the symbol shapes altogether, we see a different form coming into focus.

White Key Hole

Ships From: Philadelphia, PA US

Description: This work combines different systems of painting. For the Western audience, the simplest way to talk about this is to point out the regular Modernist grid of keyhole forms in comparison to the gesso and panel underwork that radiates out from one point - like single-point perspective. In Western painting, that is the difference between post-Renaissance painting and Modernism: The organization of the traditional painting is single point perspective, but Modernism left that “illusionistic” notion behind so viewers could see the literal stuff of painting on the surface. Once we can bring in the keyhole as a point of perspective, it gets really interesting. One keyhole is the model of single-point perspective - it’s like a lens between the viewer and the thing he looks at. Many keyholes, however, means varied perspectives that cannot see the same object the same way.

Connector

Ships From: Philadelphia, PA US

Description: The “connector” paintings, as a series, are a view into how symbols blossom onto new levels in culture. Hur’s keyhole symbols are both an illustration of this and part of an actual system. In this painting, Hur uses his keyhole symbol with the mostly painted-over shadow of a recognizable image - a squid - which is in the process of being pulled into a symbolic system. The churning ocean-like lower layer and the presence of the squid, for example, change the field of the painting into the indeterminate space of ocean depths. In turn, despite the lack of specifics expected in a land-based landscape, we have many of the same features implied: horizon, gravity, space and so on. The implying of the ocean context even gives the motion of the keyhole symbols the fizzing sizzle of bubbly water ocean effervescence.

Connector #2

Ships From: Philadelphia, PA US

Description: The Connector series might not look like a series to some people - because they connect not unlike the way a caterpillar connects to a butterfly. The driving force behind the series has to do with qualitative steps that required something to move from one cultural level to another. The common phenomenon isn’t complicated, but seeing the steps in action isn’t easy. This painting is part of one of the quantum systems of change, but it was made to stand on its own. We can see this echoed in the relationship between the bottom, which acts like a foreground or a repoussoir, and the other parts of the painting. There is a spatial sense, but the handling of the paint also keeps us looking at the literal surface at the same time we see imagined depths

Connector 3

Ships From: Philadelphia, PA US

Description: This particular painting goes a step beyond its companion piece by dividing the lowest level and moving up into space. This work feels looser and more painterly, but it also flows upward in a clear way. It is supposed to be strong and visually exciting. The idea behind Jung's idea is about culture and how things can transform into meaningful symbols. The driving force behind the series has to do with qualitative steps that required something to move from one cultural level to another. The common phenomenon isn’t complicated, but seeing the steps in action isn’t easy. Jung wants the viewer to be distracted by the muscularity of the brushwork or the lusciousness of the color, the compositional rhythms all at the same time we see imagined depths. Connectors move in many directions; it’s a matter of perspective.

Mirror #2

Ships From: Philadelphia, PA US

Description: The egg form relates to the mirror for artists in particular because of what goes into drawing the left as opposed to the right side of the egg. It is rather symmetrical, but they are very different gestures for an artist. Symmetry is a tricky assumption. Mirrors reverse things. Looking into a mirror is like facing an another person exchanges left for right. Eggs, on the other hand, are imperfect. “A word” backward is “drow A” - and not so legible in that form: It changes from straightforward to code that must be parsed. Jung's mirror form to introduce ideas about subjectivity and seeing ourselves about others.  A fundamental concern in his work is how everyone has a different perspective and the effect this has on society and culture.

We also see imprints of similar forms on the heavily worked surface of the painting. Artist’s goal here is to reveal layers as clusters of perspectives conveying that some of them are hidden and much overlooked, hidden and much overlooked. The egg form relates to the mirror for Jung Hur in particular because of what goes into drawing the left as opposed to the right side of the egg. And with the alternating between dark and light backgrounds, Viewers have to ask ourselves: Does the form rise from the space, or move back into it? Does it represent forward growth or recognition - seeing something from the past? The mirror form introduces ideas about subjectivity and seeing ourselves in relation to others.  The subjectivity question increases the role of the act of painting for the meaning of this object. Verdant Constellation

Ships From: Philadelphia, PA US

Description: Jung Hur’s stylized pair of shapes that represents a key and keyhole open the door to many philosophical ideas. This painting investigates the notion that many different perspectives take on not only a shape but that that together they create a textured aesthetic. This suggests that truth is more something of our sensibilities than of objective fact. The green feels like a vibrant, growing sense of life in an indeterminately vast whiteness of space. The process of a painting like this takes a huge amount of time, but with more details, we don’t necessarily see something more specific, but often a subject more vast and diaphanous than ever.

Pipa Dream #12

Description: The inspiration for the work came from the Chinese Poet Bai Juyi's* poem “Pipa Song and the memory of a Pipa (Chinese lute) musical performance. Artworks from the “Musical Calligraphy series” are improvised translations of music into the artistic script. Using the abstract calligraphic form of the Chinese cursive script, it's character is unrestrained, rhythmic and emotional. This "writing" is abstract and has a calligraphic form, resembling Chinese running script, thus the name "Musical Calligraphy." Unrestrained, rhythmic and emotional, each work is my interpretation of a particular piece. Weislaw took part in an autumn evening cruise on the famous West Lake (Hangzhou), accompanied by beautiful Pipa player. Her enchanting performance inspired him profoundly, sometimes later I created twelve paintings. Each painting is composed of the Chinese character ”夢 (meng-Dream), in the shape of the instrument, written once or many times. Using the Running Script**, a style of the Chinese calligraphy. He also incorporated the name of the Pipa player in the art to create this Pipa Dream series.

Imposed Symmetry

Description: A stunning example of the work of an American Master Painter Edward Evans', born in 1935. Edwards work visually is stunning. The degree of illusion he achieves through his mastery of airbrush techniques is unique and different than the work of other traditional artists. The 3-d illusion of his work often mistaken as photographic prints until close examination to realize it is painted on Canvas. Airbrush has always been sneered at by fine artists as being a tool for lowly advertising illustration. Score one for Evans for using it to invent a style both lush and stark. It is colorful and never fail to engage conversation with disbelieve. “Imposed Symmetry” came as a concept loosely base on a previous painting captured the color on the rocks and ground. This painting is mostly about formal elements. In this painting, the Edward wanted to create a contrast in direction and stabilize the composition by making long horizontal shapes that cross the verticals.
