CINCINNATI CLASSICAL CHEST OF DRAWERS

Lot 28: CINCINNATI CLASSICAL CHEST OF DRAWERS

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: CLASSICAL CHEST OF DRAWERS Cincinnati, Ohio, 1840-1850, cherry and poplar. Four drawer chest with highly figured veneer, period glass pulls (probably made in Pittsburgh), and elaborately turned half columns and turned feet. 44"h. 45"w. 21.5"d. The original owner of this chest was likely Adolphus Smith, who was born in 1814 in New York, moved to Cincinnati in 1838, moved around in Ohio and Indiana for a few years, during which time he married Sarah Bates (1842), finally settling back in Cincinnati. The young couple probably purchased the chest when they were setting up housekeeping in Cincinnati in the early 1840s. Adolphus worked for John Bates, Sarah's father, who not only owned the National Theater, but also the Exchange Bank. Interestingly, Bates advertised in the 1840 city directory that he wanted to do business with "industrious mechanics." This suggests that he likely purchased most of his furniture from local cabinetmakers. The chest descended through Adolphus's family--his daughter, Maria, married Andrew Hickenlooper, who was a surveyor and civil engineer, but most notably, he served gallantly in the Civil War, fighting at Shiloh, Vicksburg, and on the Atlanta campaign.
