Auction Description:
  This auction offers a variety of artistic positions questioning the human nature! This is not only expressed in intimate portraits but also, of course, in realistic genre paintings. The timescale of the exquisite selection of works begins in the 1900s and extends into the present time. Especially Henry Charles Tenré’s, ‘La Marchande de Violettes’ from c. 1900 and W. Ernst's oil painting from c. 1910, which shows three dancing ladies, promise to make every collector’s heart leap. Other highlights include an oil painting by Russian painter Nina A. Sergeeva from 1951, which shows three Russian village teenagers, and the colored offset print ‘Schokoladenmädchen in Grün’ by Strawalde (Jürgen Böttcher) from the 1990s. Samuel Brunner (1858-1939)Samuel Brunner was born in the Moravian town Pohorelice (Poho?elice) He studied from 1874 to 1877 at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna with Michael Rieser and then from 1878 to 1883 at the Academy in Munich with Gyula Benczúr and Wilhelm von Lindenschmitt. Until 1888 Brunner worked as a painter in Munich, then moved to Brno, where he gave painting lessons. First, he created history paintings, often with themes of the Old Testament. He also was very successful as a portrait painter, because he skillfully captured the personality of the sitter. Several authentic studies for the famous painting are known and are located in St. Petersburg and in the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow. Condition: The painting is discolored and shows marks, foxing marks, creases and spots with color abrasion. Traces of the coiled storage can be seen as vertical creases. Il'ia Efimovich Repin (1844-1930) The Russian painter Il'ia Efimovich Repin worked at the beginning of his career as an icon painter before he studied at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg in the 1860s. After graduating successfully Repin received a travel scholarship which allowed him to travel and study abroad for several years. In this time the painter visited Vienna, Rome and Paris before he returned to Russia. Later Repin became professor for history painting at the academy in St. Petersburg. He belonged to the artists' group Peredwischniki (Eng. wanderer) and is regarded as one of the protagonists of realism. Repin painted historic subjects, contemporary motifs and figure paintings. Thus he made a lot of portraits of important contemporaries (e.g. Leo Tolstoi) and dedicated himself to social themes such as with the painting "Barge Haulers on the Volga" which is one of his most famous works.
