Lot 37: A Thangka depicting "Sitatapatra" China/Tibet, 18th -19th century

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: A Thangka depicting "Sitatapatra" China/Tibet, 18th -19th century This Thangka, of great artistic and pictorial worth, portrays the goddess Sitātapatrā. Generally, she is represented in two variants, a more simple one with two arms and parasol (Chhatra) as her attribute and an extremely complex one with a thousand heads, a thousand arms and legs and ten million eyes. Here she is portrayed in a particular form with eight arms and three faces. Of white complexion, the main face is serene and extremely graceful whilst the other faces have an irate aspect, one blue with open mouth and the other red and frowning, all three have the third eye on the forehead. Sitting in the lotus pose, Padmāsana, in addition to the parasol, from which she is named, she also has the eight-spoked wheel symbol of Buddhist doctrine (Dharmacakra), the arrow (Śara), the goad (Aṅkuśa) that engages and converts the doubters, the standard (Dhvaja) which, apart from being one of the eight auspicious symbols, indicates that the wearer has contributed to the victory of Buddhism, the Vajra, a symbol of absolute, the bow (Cāpa) which together with the arrow indicates the ability to hit the mark, and the rope (Pāśa) that serves to tie up the demons and bring closer those who are far away. Thirty secondary figures are gathered around Sitātapatrā in seven horizontal rows, the most important and distinguishable are in the centre of the first and last row arranged above and below the main deity, almost forming a vertical axis. With the highest figure two lateral lotus flowers can be distinguished that contain the sword, the book and hands in the mudrā of turning the wheel of doctrine, the reformer Tsongkhapa and founder of the Gelug-pa school. Palden Lhamo (Śri Devi in Sanskrit) is represented in the lower area, the only Dharmapala female, riding her wild ass, with an eye on its back. She is seated on human skin and holds the sceptre (Daṇḍa) symbol of domination and punitive power and the Kapāla containing blood. Above her head is an umbrella made of peacock feathers which indicates her complete immunity to poison. The figure originally comes from the Hindu Kali, her presence is an indication of a fierce war against the enemies of the Dharma. The remaining twenty-eight figures are difficult to identify, but it is possible that they are twenty-eight types of Tārā. The beautiful original silk brocade embroidered with decorations depicting dragons and stylized clouds is of note and is in excellent condition. lxh 85 x 156 cm
