Influenced by Lucio Fontana and the informel art, he mainly created reliefs and three-dimensional spatial arrangements. In 1960, the founders of the Azimuth gallery separated, and Bonalumi and Manzoni joined the 'ZERO' group. The following year, Bonalumi was a co-founder of the group 'Nouvelle École Européenne' in Lausanne. Since 1970, the artist also worked as a stage and costume designer for various theaters in Italy. Ball pen and pencil on paper Ivory Coast, 2011 Frédéric Bruly Bouabré (1921-2014) - Ivorian poet and painter Both verso dated, inscribed and signed; 'DATE: 24-01-2011. SIGNATURE-AUTEUR: FBBouabe' and 'DATE: 5-2-2011. SIGNATURE-AUTEUR: FBBouabe' Both titled along the edges; 'DEUX 09 SOUDÉS EN ART IMAGEANT UN BRACELET' and the other 'LES SIGNES D'UNE SCARIFICATION SUR UNE PORTE METALLIQUE' Overall dimensions, framed: each 23.5 x 19.5 cm; sheet size: each 19 x 16 cm Very good condition Provenance: private collection, Paris, France The present pendant of colorful drawings was made by the Ivorian artist Frédéric Bruly Bouabré. Many of his works were focused on themes such as 'cultural identity' and its preservation. The artist was a tribesman of the Bété that were like many African tribes mainly based on orally transmitted cultures. Bouabré therefore had a very special relationship to scriptures. He actually considered it as the main reason for the powerful position of Europe in contrast to Africa. With his small-scale drawings he therefore intended to preserve small aspects of his daily life for later generations. The present works are beautiful examples of this artistic approach and reveal the typical characteristics: both were painted with ball pen and pencil and are fitted with a framing sentence in French. On the back side, the artist eventually set the date and his signature. Regarding the pictures in the center, it so becomes obvious that these works were deeply related to the tradition of pictograms. The works are in very good condition. They are respectively mounted with two adhesive tapes onto a strong cardboard. One work is titled along the edge 'DEUX 09 SOUDÉS EN ART IMAGEANT UN BRACELET' and verso dated, inscribed and signed 'DATE: 24-01-2011. SIGNATURE-AUTEUR: FBBouabe'. The other piece is titled along the edge 'LES SIGNES D'UNE SCARIFICATION SUR UNE PORTE METALLIQUE' and verso dated, inscribed and signed 'LES SIGNES D'UNE SCARIFICATION SUR UNE PORTE METALLIQUE'. The wooden frames are also in very good condition and both measure 23.5 x 19.5 cm. The size of each cardboard is 19 x 16 cm. Frédéric Bruly Bouabré (1921-2014) A native from the Ivory Coast, Frédéric Bruly Bouabré was a self-taught artist and active in poetry and painting. His early poems, stories and drawings were mainly focused on language and identity. Since a religious vision in 1948, Bouabré produced and continuously expanded a number of different work cycles, in which he tried to trace the world in its entirety. The artist was a tribesman of the Bété, who significantly depended on their orally preserved tradition. Bouabré therefore developed a syllabary, in order to document the language and culture of his people; the Africa explorer Théodore Monod (1902-2000) was the first who published it in 1958. Besides, Bouabré also created numerous small-scale drawings which remind of the art of pictograms. In Europe, the artist gains attention since the late 1980s; his works were, for instance, exhibited at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Biennale in Venice and the documenta in Kassel. It is an oil drawing of a hat from the series 'Les Chapeaux de l'AWK'. He created this series during the existence of his invented "Académie Worosis Kiga". Prospective pupils at this academy had to draw a hat as a (fictive) entry-examination. Those works were signed by Gasiorowski and thus became part of his oeuvre. The drawing is signed and dated lower center in pencil 'Gasiorowski 1973'. It is in good condition, the mount is slightly protruding to the front. The sheet is slightly soiled and in the corners are tape marks. The sheet is mounted centrally on cardboard (reversible) and framed. The sheet is 41.2 x 32 cm in size and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 44.5 x 36 cm. Gérard Gasiorowski (1930-1986) Gérard Gasiorowski began his artistic education with studying at the École des Arts appliqués in Paris. In the beginning his work was associated to the movement of pop art and then he moved on with incorporating photographic elements into his works. He increasingly got interested in simulating war scenes with toys and he himself also took an active role in those 'plays'. Probably the most distinct of his artistic actions was the foundation of a fictional academy. He named it the "Académie Worosis Kiga" and fictional pupils and teachers enrolled and created works of art that he signed. The present work of art is an example of this creative period of the artist. In 1983, a large retrospective at the ARC in Paris honored Gasiorowski's oeuvre. Works of his are in the possession of the collections of the Ludwig Museum Koblenz and the Centre Pompidou Paris for example.
