Béchard, Henri: Market and street scenes in Cairo

Lot 4002: Béchard, Henri: Market and street scenes in Cairo

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Market and street scenes in Cairo. Mid-1870s. 3 albumen prints. Circa 27 x 21,5 cm and 21,2 x 27 cm. Each with photographer's name in lower right corner, as well as numbered and titled in lower left in the negative, mounted to card (slightly buckled), collector's stamp in lower right corner on the mount. Béchard produced some of the most well-composed and endearing photographs of Egypt. They are rarer than photos by Sebah, Bonfils, Arnoux and Zangaki, as the studio only worked from the 1870s-1880s, whereas the other studios were still producing work throughout the 1890s. The prints offered here are signed by H.(enri) Béchard but prints signed by Émile Béchard, who might have been his brother or even the same person, also exist. The images show an Arabian café, a spice seller at the market, and women washing laundry. - Some surface scuff marks, otherwise strong prints with a rich chocolate-brown tone and in very good condition. Provenance: Robert Lebeck Collection Lit.: Ken Jacobson. Odalisques and Arabesques: Orientalist Photography 1839 - 1925. London 2007, see pp. 210-212.

China: View of the temple of Haigunsi at Tianjin (Treaty Temple Tientsn)

Lot 4008: China: View of the temple of Haigunsi at Tianjin (Treaty Temple Tientsn)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: View of the temple of Haiguansi at Tianjin (Treaty Temple Tianjin). Circa 1860/61. Albumen print from a wet collodion negative. 9,3 x 16,4 cm. Mounted to contemporary paper leaf bearing original inscriptions in Chinese and English. An exceptionally rare view of the temple of Haiguansi at Tianjin, where the agreements collectively known as the 'Treaty of Tientsin' were signed in June 1858. This photograph was taken in the immediate aftermath of the Second Opium War, as the presence of army tents, artillery pieces and gun limbers in front of the temple testifies. The most likely time frame for this view is during the period October 1860 - May 1862, when a British garrison was temporarily stationed in Tianjin. This photograph may well have been taken by an officer in one of the regiments stationed there, such as the amateur photographer Dr. Jones Lamprey (1824-1900), although another likely candidate would be one of the photographers attached to the Prussian East Asian Expedition, which visited Tianjin in May 1861. Two other photographs most likely by the same photographer with the same inscriptions are held in the Tianjin Collection at the Carl A. Kroch Library, Cornell University. - Slight time-staining in right edge, otherwise a strong print in very good condition.

Cloots, Anacharsis: Physionotrace portrait of Anacharsis Cloots

Lot 4010: Cloots, Anacharsis: Physionotrace portrait of Anacharsis Cloots

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: Edme Quenedey (1756 - 1830). Profile portrait of Anacharsis Cloots (Jean-Baptiste du Val-de-Grâce). 1789. Physionotrace engraving (image diameter 8,5 cm, sheet size 22,5 x 15,8 cm). Engraved text around lower image edge Dess. et. Gravé avec le physionotrace par Quenedey as well as below image. Cloots came from a noble Prussian family of Dutch origin. He moved to Paris in 1776 and collaborated on the compilation of Denis Diderot's Encyclopédie. As of 1784 he travelled Europe and returned to Paris at the outbreak the Revolution in 1789. Cloots quickly became an ardent democrat and a member of the Jacobin Club. He was the head of a delegation of 36 foreigners and addressed the revolutionary National Assembly on June 17, 1791. He called himself "The Orator of Mankind" and adopted the pseudonym "Anacharsis". In September 1792 he became a naturalized French citizen and was elected to the National Convention. After the Jacobins took control of the government in June 1793, Cloots identified himself with the left wing under the leadership of Jacques Hébert. In December the Jacobin leader Robespierre had Cloots expelled from the Jacobin Club for his support of the Hébertist dechristianizers, who were attempting to destroy all Roman Catholic institutions. Accused of being a foreign agent, Cloots was beheaded with leading Hébertists on March 24, 1794. Nearly 200 years later Cloot's life and work made a strong impression on the conceptual artist Joseph Beuys and he often referenced Cloots in his work; for a period the artist also called himself "Jospehanacharsis Clootsbeuys". Physionotrace portraits were made by first producing a silhouette portrait of the sitter. This portrait was then transferred in reduced form onto a copper plate by using a mechanical apparatus, invented by Gilles-Louis Chrétien in 1786. Chrétien founded a very successful portrait studio in Paris together with Edme Quenedey in 1788. - Some fold marks, a few small stains in margins, paper slightly soiled, otherwise in good condition. Lit.: H. Beraldi/R. Portalis. Les graveurs du dix-huitième siècle, Tome III. Paris 1882, pp. 364-65.
