Federal inlaid mahogany desk and bookcase, probably New York

Lot 44: Federal inlaid mahogany desk and bookcase, probably New York

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Federal inlaid mahogany desk and bookcase, probably New York circa 1790-1800, broken-arch pediment with rosettes and inlaid plinth and line-inlaid frieze, top with divided glazed doors opening to adjustable shelved interior, lower case with quarter-fan inlaid fallboard opening to fitted interior, quarter-fan inlaid long drawers with highly figured mahogany veneers, on shaped bracket feet. H96" W46" D22 1/2" Provenance: Dallas, Texas private collection Other Notes: Sumpter Priddy, commentary: Desk and bookcase, America, 1795-1805 Dimensions: Height 96", width 46", depth 22 1/2" Medium: mahogany with mahogany veneers and light and dark wood inlays primary; poplar and yellow pine secondary The piece has much in common with Charleston secretary bookcases. Similarities include its pediment shaping (particularly the carved rosettes), mullion arrangement, writing interior, dimensions, and play of lighter veneers on the drawer fronts versus darker veneers of the surrounding banding and case. The final analysis, however, yields that it more likely originated in New York. Factors supporting this conclusion comprise of the grouped faded light wood "pentaglyph" inlayed in the cornice frieze and the secondary materials and construction--most Charleston pieces had dust boards during this period.

Condition Report: Good restored condition with old repairs, minor scratches and scuffs consistent with age and use. One corner of cornice nicked. On left door: top left square appear to be replaced with old glass. On right door: bottom right square, top right and left squares and left middle rectangle appear to be replaced with old glass. Please refer to commentary by Sumpter Priddy listed in full description online. *** Notice to bidders: The absence of a condition report does not imply that an object is free of defects or restoration. Condition reports are prepared by request on a 'first come, first served' basis. For more information please read paragraph #9 of Terms and Condition of Sale.

Federal Neoclassical mahogany two-part banquet table, Norfolk, Virginia

Lot 47: Federal Neoclassical mahogany two-part banquet table, Norfolk, Virginia

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Federal Neoclassical mahogany two-part banquet table, Norfolk, Virginia circa 1815, rectangular top with rounded corners, over straight skirt, on turned legs with gateleg supports; attributed to the shop of James Woodward. H28 7/8" W42" L77 1/2" open Provenance: Maryland private collection Literature: The lower vase form and multi-bead turned elements on the legs resemble several similar turnings on legs attributed to the shop of James Woodward, Norfolk, Virginia, circa 1810-1820; note pp.29, 30, 31 and 32 in CLASSICAL NORFOLK FURNITURE 1810-1840 by Thomas R.J. Newbern and James R. Melchor. Other Notes: Conservation report available upon request. Primary wood is mahogany with mahogany veeners; secondary woods are a variety of conifer for blocking and skirt substrate and either ash or oak for the stay and fly rails. The underside of the top has vertical saw marks consistent with a large water-powered vertical form saw, owned by Thomas Sully who also sold mahogany boards. There is some similarity in the turnings to the work of Smith and Ghiselin. The two and three-part banquet dining tables were popular in Virginia, particularly in the Norfolk area, which in turn influenced Richmond.
