Francis Brooks Chadwick Oil Portrait 1924

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The American expatriot Impressionist painter Francis Brooks Chadwick (1853-1943) painted this lovely and refined oil portrait in France in 1924. The canvas is 36"x29", and is in a new frame measuring 33"x40" The painting was found in a Boston, Massachusetts estate and was in need of cleaning and lining. An inscription was discovered on the back of the canvas during restoration. It reads "Belong to Mrs. F. B. Chadwick"(sic) and is written in an area which was covered by the stretcher. To preserve it, the painting has been lined onto clear Plexiglas, and the stretcher cut away to reveal the full inscription. During cleaning, the artist's signature and the date 1924 were discovered in the upper right mid-section of the canvas, painted faintly in a color similar to the background. Because of the location of the inscription and a multitude of old tack holes in the tacking edges, the canvas appears to have been brought from France un-stretched, and re-framed in Boston sometime in the 1940's. From Wikipedia: Francis Brooks Chadwick (1850 ??? 1942), was an American painter active in France. He was born in Boston and studied at Harvard, and to pursue his interest in art he attended the Acad??mie Julian in Paris. He was friends with the painter John Singer Sargent and traveled with him to Haarlem in 1880. The following year he married the Swedish painter Emma Lowstadt and they settled in Grez-sur-Loing, where he remained the rest of his life, though the couple travelled to other summer art colonies on vacation. From Cornwall Artists: Painter from Boston, Massachusetts, who had worked at Concarneau at the same time as Jules Bastien-LePage. Though little known today, Francis Chadwick was an important and innovative figure in the American art world in the late nineteenth century. Like his friend John Singer SARGENT, Chadwick was a portrait, figure and landscape painter, and both became part of the expatriate American art community. Other than Mary Cassatt, and perhaps Sargent himself, Chadwick may have been the earliest American painter to join the Impressionist movement, and he was the most established figure in the important artists' colony in Grez sur Loing in France where he spent almost all his professional career. The painting is in excellent restored condition. Item ID:4065B_

Judaica Glass Wall Art By Syntelis

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The artist Syntelis, known as a Greek sculptor, used an unusual glass art technique to create this iconic piece of Judaica art. At first, it looks like stained and leaded glass, but upon closer inspection, it is reverse-painted with transparent colors and powders, and what appears to be leading is a resin applied to the surface. There is a solid white backing board to reflect light back through the glass, and in the right environment, the painting seems to glow with an inner fire. The piece was created around 1960-1970, and has a heavy wooden distressed-finish frame around it. The frame and the art are in generally good condition, with a few minor bits of color missing from the bottom right edge of the glass (see photo.) The overall effect if this art is very impressive. The overall size of the glass is 24" x 24", the frame is 28"x28" Item ID:KK4 Fixed Price Shipping & Insurance on this item =$47.00

Antique Spanish Impressionist Oil Painting By Tudela

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This rhythmic rendition of a country landscape was painted by Spanish artist Joaquin Tudela y Perales (1892-1970). It appears to be one of his early paintings, probably from his youth, around 1910. The view is painted on unprimed canvas, in a masterfully direct manner. The paint is thick and buttery, holding impressions of the artist's brush. The marks are energetic and swirling with the influence of the Impressionist masters of the early 20th Century. Joaquin Tudela y Perales had an outstanding artistic career, and was considered to be a Spanish artistic treasure. His works were in high demand, and are included in the national collections of Spain. This painting, signed simply Tudela, appears to have been sold to a traveler shortly after being created, and transported to the USA where it was mounted onto stretcher modified to accommodate the European metric measurements. The painting has been cleaned and lined onto a new canvas to strengthen it. A few minor scuffs were in-painted, and a light coat of non-yellowing varnish was added to protect the paint. The canvas is on the original modified stretcher, which measures approx. 17.75"x15.75". The newer frame measures 20.5"x22.25" Item ID:3249AUT Fixed Price Shipping & Insurance on this item =$87.00

Antique Hudson River Fantasy Oil Painting

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This luminous landscape painting is an early 20th Century oil painting inspired by the Hudson River School of painters. The bucolic setting has charming details of a paddle-wheel steamboat with American flag, an impressive three-story country home in the foreground and a sailboat in the distance. Above all of it, a blue mountain glows in the atmospheric distance. This painting seems to be an idealized fantasy view, and we've dubbed it "Hudson River Fantasy." It is unsigned, as so many Hudson River paintings are, but obviously made by a skilled artist. The 22" x 28" painting is lined onto a board for stability, and is installed in an old 28" x 34" frame which has been repainted in a faux gold-leaf manner. Antique Oil Portrait Of American Matron In Hand Carved Frame

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Looking for an instant ancestor? This formal portrait of a woman is from the early 1800's, and is installed in a rare hand-carved wooden frame. (All the details are carved in low relief -- you can see rough chisel marks!) The woman is posed reading a letter with a magnifying glass. The glass has a long gold chain. Everything about this woman, from the bonnet to the mourning dress and the sofa she is sitting on, indicates her status as wealthy matron. The painting is unsigned, as many early American portraits are, and the sitter is unidentified. The canvas measures 24" x 20" and the frame is 32" x 28" The painting has been cleaned and restored. The frame is in "as-found" condition, with a few minor new repairs, and a few old repairs. In general, it is in great condition. It is skillfully carved, but not highly smoothed-out and refined. It is a "country" frame and as such is an American primitive from the early 1800's. The gold paint on it has dulled. It may be original, or from it's previous restoration, which could have been in the early 1900's. There is no evidence that the frame ever had another finish. It may have been originally unpainted, and made for another artwork. Although they are approximately the same age, the portrait is fit into the frame in a way that shows that they were not originally together. Dramatic New Hampshire Franconia Notch Landscape Oil Painting c. 1870

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This antique American oil painting dates from around 1870. It shows the vast wilderness landscape of Echo lake at Franconia Notch, New Hampshire, and features two sets of deer under a dramatic clouded sky. Painted at a time when the Hudson River style of painting was dominant, it combines great details with the expansive celebration of the American countryside. The painting has a limited color range, reflecting the time period it was painted in - before the easy availability of modern bright pigments. There is a sense of naive charm and wonderment to the entire composition, which sets the placid deer as a focal point. The painting is 17" x 23.5", and frame size is 23" x 30" The painting has been archivally lined, gently cleaned, retouched and is coated with non-yellowing varnish. The custom-made gold-metal leafed frame is new. The back features a protective foam-board. Item ID:3101E Fixed Price Shipping & Insurance on this item =$87.00

Aristide Maillol: Seated Female Nude, Lithograph c. 1935

Matted and framed under glass in a new burl-veneer frame with ornamental trim. Sight 7"x10", Frame size is 14"x17" Maillol was born in Banyuls-sur-Mer, Roussillon. He decided at an early age to become a painter, and moved to Paris in 1881 to study art. After several applications and several years of living with poverty, his enrollment in the ??cole des Beaux-Arts was accepted in 1885, and he studied there under Jean-L??on G??r??me and Alexandre Cabanel. His early paintings show the influence of his contemporaries Pierre Puvis de Chavannes and Paul Gauguin. Maillol???s first major sculpture, A Seated Woman, was modeled after his wife. The first version (in the Museum of Modern Art, New York) was completed in 1902, and renamed La M??diterran??e.[1] Maillol, believing that "art does not lie in the copying of nature", produced a second, less naturalistic version in 1905.[1] In 1902, the art dealer Ambroise Vollard provided Maillol with his first exhibition.[4] The subject of nearly all of Maillol's mature work is the female body, treated with a classical emphasis on stable forms. The figurative style of his large bronzes is perceived as an important precursor to the greater simplifications of Henry Moore, and his serene classicism set a standard for European (and American) figure sculpture until the end of World War II. Apple Picker Oil Painting By Gottsdanker

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This large (48"x33" framed) oil painting commands attention. It dates from around 1930 and shows a woman carrying a full basket of apples from a nearby tree. The style of the painting is reminiscent of 19th Century French Barbizon artists, but the basket of apples is a uniquely American motif. One other thing that makes this painting uniquely American is that it is signed by Marcus Gottsdanker, a Chicago native who spent the depression years riding the rails and painting pictures in exchange for a bit of money and perhaps room and board. Gottsdanker was a skilled artist, but his style was not romantically polished, like the Barbizon painters. His style is bold and direct, making this painting stand out from others of its genre. The painting has been restored and is now in good condition. The frame has been re-painted metallic gold. Item ID:3233A
