The superimposed load idea did not work well and this is the only example of a tap action single barrel withtwo stages for firing that we have cataloged. The pair measure 9-1/4" overall with 4-1/4" barrels that show a turned cannontype muzzle and are approx. 70 cal smooth bore. The pair are mounted with spring released snap bayonets that are operated by sliding back trigger guard. The condition is very good plus to near fine with sharp brass surfaces with detailed engraving and crisp wood with fine checkering. The hammers show 75% plus case hardening, trigger guard show traces of finish and a patina. There is some light surface rust that would clean easily. An exceptional pair. Description: Pair of high quality English center hammer percussion pistols with side mounted spring bayonets, signed Mayes, Norwich. The pair measure 7 ½" overall with 2 ¾" octagon barrels of approximately .50 caliber falserifled. The pair are numbered 38 on the bottom of each breech and show British proofs. The grips are nicely checkered and show a silver band around butt and plaques inscribed "Lowestoft" in fancy script. Thereis a belt hook attached to left side of each frame and also a plaque at each wrist is inscribed in matching script to the butt (W. Balls) most likely the original owner who resided in Lowestoft? The metal surfaces arein good condition with a light gray to brown patina showing some pitting and erosion. The engraving is sharp and edges crisp. Stocks are very good plus with just a few minor bumps and mars. Both actions are working.Last sold Richard K. Bourne auctioneer for James Elwood Jones Collection 1981. From an old N.Y. Description: Mid-Eastern Flintlock Dag or Blunderbuss, circa 19th century, 18" overall with 9" ornate iron barrel which flares to nearly 2" across muzzle with 1-1/2" plus bore. The stock shows silver colored wire inlay ofwhich about half is missing. The lock and barrel are deeply chiseled though somewhat crude. The brass trigger guard and butt plate are roughly cast and ornate as is the side plate. A saddle ring and bar areattached to left side. The ram rod is missing. Description: Antique breech loading cane gun signed inside action "Richard Ellis & Sons Gun & Rifle Manufactures, St. Mary's square, Birmingham, Eng." Circa about 1870-1885. This well made cane gun shows a black Japanned or paintedmetal body with a simple wood grip and a detachable shoulder stock. A thumb latch locks the action and the breech is exposed by a left hand twist of the handle. Approx 20 gauge black powder, center fire with shortcase 2-1/2" or less. The condition is near fine with 90-95% painted finish, a few small chips and losses with rust and erosion starting at the metal where finish is lost. The grip and stock are very good and a muzzle cap is included. Measures 48" with stock attached, cane portion 36", barrel portion 26". From an old N.Y. old collector's estate. Est.;$1,250-$2,500.
