An American silver centrepiece, by Edward C.

Lot 6: An American silver centrepiece, by Edward C.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: An American silver centrepiece, by Edward C. Moore, Tiffany & Co., c. 1875, in the Aesthetic Movement style, with unusual central gilt well, probably for a floral arrangement, 22.5cm square, 12.5cm high, 20oz This centrepiece exemplifies the Japanese influenced pieces designed for Tiffany by Edward C Moore in the 1870s. In the late 19th century Japonism was flourishing in Europe. At the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1867 Edward C Moore, whilst being stationed on the Tiffany exhibit, would have been well placed to absorb the designs on the large and successful Japanese exhibit. In the 1870s he then began to incorporate Japanese style, with its typical asymmetry, into Tiffany designs. Examples with similar decoration are illustrated in Tiffany's 150 Years by John Loring.
