Sale Notes:
The term 'artistically versatile' perfectly encapsulates all of the highlights appearing at this auction. Expect a number of mixed media works by such artists as Eduard Micus or Orhan Peker from the 1970s and 80s alongside a nudogram executed as lambda print by Floris Michael Neusüss. The artist William Wegman captures his two Weimaraner dogs with a giclee print, while a vibrant color lithography from 1961 by Pablo Picasso rounds off the auction.

He began with his studies as an artist in Paris in 1900. At the beginning of his career, the artist was very much influenced by the Salon d'Automne, the young French Fauvists. At the same time, Braque studied the much reduced, architectural works of Cézanne. In 1907, Georges Braque met Pablo Picasso. The two artists started workin together very closely. In 1909 an art critic described Braque's works as 'cubist grotesques' and the term Cubism was coined. Two years later, Braque was seriously wounded in the First World War. After the war, he increasingly painted still lifes with a main focus on the effect of colour. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. The picturesque effect of the motif is enhanced by gray blobs of colour, irregular margins and white highlights. Gaufrages and fake shadows give the work three-dimensionality. It is particularly striking, that the material of the image carrier becomes a parameter of content in this work.In this signed lithograph, Antoni Tàpies (1923-2012) is completely devoted to the informal art. However, the Catalan artist saw himself as a 'realist', who wanted to make reality detectable with his works. The non-figural and non-geometric style of the informal art took its origin in the Paris of the 1940s and 1950s. The tension between the resolution and emergence of forms, as well as the colours and materials became the determining image topics. The lithograph by Antoni Tàpies is signed 'Tàpies' in pencil right below the image and numbered lower left '38/50'. It is mounted on white cardboard on the top, matted and mounted in a gold wood frame. The work is overall in good condition, showing usual signs of age and wear. He taught himself to draw and paint while still at school. Tapiès attended law school for three years, and then studied painting at the Acadèmia Valls in Barcelona. He was among the founders of the art group 'Dau al Set', a movement with links to the surrealist and dadaist artists. His interest for philosophy led him to read existentialist literature. Tapiès's works are represented in international museums and were shown at the Venice Biennale and documenta in Kassel. In 1884, Tapiès founded the Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona, where he lived and worked until his death in 2012. At first glance, it looks like a collage or paper work that was taped on paper and covered with paint. At closer approach, this assumption turns out to be an illusion. Devoted to informal art, Tàpies created non-figural motifs, and focused on the exploration of materials and colours, which he used as autonomous parameter of content. In this respect, the present lithograph - which was used as a poster for an exhibition of Catalan art in Berlin in 1978 - must definitely be regarded as a characteristic work. The sheet is signed lower right in pencil 'Tàpies' and numbered lower left '17/99'. It is mounted on white cardboard on the top and framed in a wooden frame with poliment gilding. The condition is very good with only minor signs of age and wear. One of them is a lithograph titled 'Profile', the other one being an aquatint etching with the title 'Mountain Path'. 'Mountain Path' was published in Jacques Dupin's book 'Le Sentier de montagne' for the first time. The so-called 'graphic painter' succeeded in a unique way to illustrate this matter of his paintings even in his printmaking. The prints are each signed lower right 'tàpies', numbered 8/75 (lithograph) and inscribed 'HC' (etching) lower left. In the late 1940s Vasarely started to engage in the concept of geometric patterns and their influence on the senses. He explores and creates his own abstract geometric language that carries a certain kinetic energy. According to the artist, his geometric language is universally understood through vision and perception. The work is rendered with black die-cut adhesive film on metal gold foil. It is constructed with geometric forms that through optical distortion create the illusion of depth and movement as well as a sense of three-dimensionality.The work by Victor Vasarely is in good very condition. The dimensions framed are 52 x 52 cm, and the dimensions of the pvc panel are 50 x 50 cm.Victor Vasarely (1906-1997)Victor Vasarely was born in Pécs in Hungary in 1906. He started studying at the Podolini-Volkmann Academy in Budapest in 1927. In 1930 he moved to Paris where he successfully worked as a graphic designer and started exploring the effect of geometric patterns on the senses. Through that interest he created his own geometric abstractions. The variations of these are image patterns with kinetic effects on the viewer. With this concept Vasarely created the basis and a fundament for the origins of Op Art. Between 1955 and 1968 he regularly took part in the Documenta. In 1976 he opened his Vasary foundation in Aixe-en-Provence and helped to build an institute for architecture. In the same year the city Pécs, where he was born, honoured him with a Vasarely museum. Differential taxation is not possible. In this painting, José Vela Zanetti (1913-1999) has chosen one of his typical motifs - the peasant. Zanetti's portraits are character studies that reflect the rural life in Castile, Zanetti's home, in an impressive way. The distinct and dynamic brushstrokes are a parameter of content in this work, corresponding with the sturdy appearance of the farmer. The particular depiction allows the viewer to approach very close to the farmer - so close, that the farmer's expressive face and his powerful hands, grasping through the fine grain, are shown to their best advantage. The reduced portrait of the sower corresponds with the flat background. In this painting, Zanetti has not aimed for a faithful reproduction of the image motif, but for the expression of its symbolic content. The painting of José Vela Zanetti is signed lower right 'Vela Zanetti'. The condition is good with slight signs of age and wear. The wooden shows some minor blemishes to the edges. The varnished colour surface shows a few long scratches at a closer viewing. He completed his art studies in Madrid with his teacher, José Ramon Zaragoza. An educational journey brought him to Italy in 1933. The Spanish Civil War, which broke out in 1936, was to mark him in a cruel manner, because his father was executed because of his socialist political views. In 1939, this event brought Zanetti into exile to the Dominican Republic. There, his great success as a painter and 'muralist' started. He received over 100 commissions for wall paintings from public institutions such as libraries, government buildings and banks. Since 1945, Zanetti also worked as a lecturer at the National Art Academy in Santo Domingo, whose director he became in 1949. Especially in his early works during the time in the Dominican Republic, he repeatedly returned to this theme, which reminded him with nostalgic thought of his earlier homeland Spain. The fact that Zanetti felt very closely connected to his origin, becomes very eminent in the almost poetically rendered rural portrait. The dreamy look of the farmer's face reaches far into the distance, and gives evidence of wisdom and profundity. Accordingly, every detail is rendered with dignity: the face is shaped by experience, the beret, the warming wool blanket and the Zanetti typical, powerful hands symbolize the most eminent indications of the peasant origin of the sitter. The painting is signed on the lower right 'Vela Zanetti'. The condition is very good with only minimal signs of age and wear. The wood panel is slightly damaged on the edges. The painting was cleaned in 2013 during a restoration, in the marginal areas minimally retouched, varnished and re-mounted on a verso wooden frame. There is a further small area of retouching in the center of the printed figures; closer inspection reveals a fine single hair stuck in the surface of paint. It is signed with pencil on the chipboard lower right 'arman' and numbered with pencil lower left '3/90'. The object measures 75.5 x 108.5 x 16.5 cm (height x width x depth).Arman (1928-2005)Arman, actually Armand Pierre Fernandez, first studied at the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Nice, before studying archeology and oriental art at the École du Louvre in Paris. In 1958, he took on the alias 'Arman' and began to experiment with his first accumulations.
