Lot 1: Eduard Bargheer (1901-1979), "Portrait of a Man", 1972

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Pencil and watercolour on handmade paper, framed in a matte Germany, 1972 Eduard Bargheer (1901-1979) - German painter and graphic artist Signed and dated lower right 'Bargheer 72' Overall dimensions, framed: 52 x 42 cm; the sheet measures 43 x 32 cm Good condition Provenance: from the estate of Ludwig Heinrich Heydenreich (1903-1978), art historian and friend of Bargheer This expressive study of a male head is a fine example for Bargheer's classical portraits; watercolours by Bargheer fetch up to 20,000 euros at international auctions This watercolour by the German painter and graphic artist Eduard Bargheer shows the portrait of a young man. Like in many of Bargheer's work figurativeness and abstraction merge together and create an aesthetically very appealing composition. The expressive colouring of the man, who gazes with a stern expression at the spectator, stands in the tradition of the classic modern painting, to which Bargheer's oeuvre belongs. The watercolour is in good condition. The sheet has been mounted onto the matte at the upper margin. It shows some minor traces of age and wear along the margins as well as some short tears on the right side. The sheet has minimal creases. The image itself is left completely untouched by the afore mentioned and remains in very good condition. The drawing is signed and dated in pencil lower right "Bargheer 72". The overall dimensions, framed, are 52 x 40 cm; the sheet measures 43 x 32 cm. Eduard Bargheer (1901-1979) Eduard Bargheer was born near Hamburg in 1901. He started studying at the art school Hamburg-Lerchenfeld, but was basically self-taught. In 1925 he travelled to Italy for the first time, where he spent a lot of time in Florence. In the following years he travelled to Paris, the Netherlands, Belgium and the UK. From 1928 onwards Bargheer worked in his studio in his hometown and became a member of the artist group Hamburgische Sezession. He met the art historians Aby Warburg and Erwin Panofsky as well as Paul Klee. In 1940 he moved to Ischia where he witnessed the end of the Second World War. From 1950 onwards his work was shown in many exhibitions in Germany and abroad, including the first and second documenta exhibitions in Kassel. In the 1960s Bargheer travelled throughout Africa, which, like his previous travels, considerably influenced his work. Eduard Bargheer created an extensive oeuvre, which has forged a niche for itself in-between expressionism and abstraction.

Hélène de Beauvoir, Watercolour, 'Gondolieri', France, c. 1960

Lot 2: Hélène de Beauvoir, Watercolour, 'Gondolieri', France, c. 1960

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Watercolour on paper France, around 1960 Hélène de Beauvoir (1910-2001) - French artist Signed on lower right 'H de Beauvoir' Total dimensions, framed: 61 x 78.8 cm Sheet dimensions: 48 x 66 cm Good condition The multifarious oeuvre of the younger sister of Simone de Beauvoir moves increasingly into the focus of the art scene; an artist monograph of the life and work of Hélène de Beauvoir will be published next year 'I like her painting. It is very autonomous', commented Pablo Picasso the works by Hélène de Beauvoir at her first exhibition 1936 in Paris. This autonomy is also visible in this watercolour of around 1960. The freely on the paper floating painting only suggests the Gondolieri, the canal and the magnificent buildings of Venice in spirited brushstrokes, unfolding a special, dynamic form language. As the younger sister of the famous writer Simone de Beauvoir, Hélène was most often overshadowed by her older sister. However, her works increase in popularity. Only recently, the gallery owner Ludwig Hammer consigned a large part of her estate to the National Library of Regensburg, and in 2014 an artist monograph about the life and work of the French artist will be published. The watercolour is signed on the lower right 'H de Beauvoir'. The sheet is mounted 'flying' on cardboard and is framed. The work is in good condition with traces of use and age. The paper is slightly creased, especially in the margins, in the upper area it is slightly stained. The total dimensions, framed, are 61 x 78.8 cm, and the sheet dimensions are 48 x 66 cm. Hélène de Beauvoir (1910-2001) The oeuvre of the French artist Hélène de Beauvoir, the younger sister of Simone de Beauvoir, encompasses paintings, drawings and printed works of art. In 1928, she trained at the copper engraving and graphic arts school Rue de Fleurs in Paris. At the age of 25, she was able to exhibit her works for the first time in 1936 at the Parisian Bonjean Gallery. She was married to Lionel de Roulet, a pupil of Jean-Paul Sartre, the partner of her sister. After the end of the war, de Beauvoir accompanied her husband on various trips around the world, and organised exhibitions of her work in many galleries in Europe, the US and Japan.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas Austria, 1957 Emil Beischläger (1897-1977) - Austrian artist Signed lower left 'E. Beischläger' and dated '1957' (difficult to read) Exhibition label of the Vienna Künstlerhaus of the 1950s, studio label with title of the painting and address of the artist on verso Overall dimensions, framed: 96 x 79 cm; stretcher frame: 81 x 64.5 cm Very good condition Provenance: Austrian private collection Floral still lives are a recurring subject in the work of Emil Beischläger; the present work is a particularly beautiful and large example Emil Beischläger (1897-1977) is an important Viennese painter, who became popular for his exhibitions at the Vienna Secession and the Künstlerhaus. This autumn bouquet was also on display in the Vienna Künstlerhaus in the 1950s; the corresponding exhibition label is still on the back. Between the 1930s and 1970s, colorful floral still lives were Beischläger's preferred subject. He has therefore achieved true mastery in painting them. The impasto, putty-like colours form a composition in the expressionist style. Beischläger has applied the colour layers one over another in order to create complex light and shadow effects. In this painting, the artist was more interested in the autumn colour effect of the painting, as in the mimetic representation of nature. The painting is signed lower left 'E. Beischläger' and dated '1957' (difficult to read). At the back is an exhibition label of the Vienna Künstlerhaus of the 1950s, as well as the studio label with the title 'Herbstblumenstrauß' [Autumn Bouquet]. The condition of the painting is very good, featuring only minimal signs of age and wear. The profiled wood frame is in good condition, showing small chips in places. The overall dimensions, framed, are 96 x 79 cm, the stretcher frame measures 81 x 64.5 cm. Emil Beischläger (1897-1977) The Viennese painter Emil Beischläger mainly painted landscapes, portraits and still lives. He also worked as a graphic artist. Until 1933, he exhibited at the Vienna Secession. In 1939, he was admitted as a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus, often presenting his works there. In addition to private collections in the USA, the Czech Republic, Mexico, England, Switzerland, Sweden and Japan, his works are displayed in the municipal collections of Vienna, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Arts, the City of Vienna, the Lower Austrian Provincial Museum and the Municipal Collection in Linz.

Otto Berenbrock, Mixed Media, Abstract Composition, 1967

Lot 4: Otto Berenbrock, Mixed Media, Abstract Composition, 1967

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas Otto Berenbrock (1907-?) - German artist and illustrator of Bauhaus Signed and dated on lower right 'O. Berenbrock 67' Abstract composition Dimensions: 180 x 180 cm Provenance: from the estate of the artist An impressive painting of the Bauhaus-co-founder and pupil of Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky, whose art works are a true rarity on the international art market The abstract composition by Otto Berenbrock dates to 1967. It shows an abstract composition with partly layered geometric forms. The main focus lies with the square in the centre that is of a deep blue colour. The work is rendered in a reduced colour palette of greens and blues. There are some hints of red and yellow. Below the layer of paint some preliminary drawing is partially visible. With this work, Otto Berenbrock reached a style of abstractness that emerged during the Dessau Bauhaus of the 1920s. In terms of its form and colour composition, the work speaks of the time of its creation (1967) and convinces even more so due to its large scale format. The painting is signed and dated on the lower right with 'O. Berenbrock 67'. The work is in an appealing condition with usual traces of age and wear. Some parts have been repainted and a restoration patch is visible on the back of the canvas. The dimensions of the stretcher are 180 x 180 cm. Otto Berenbrock (1907-?) The German artist and illustrator Otto Berenbrock was a co-founder of the Bauhaus art movement in Germany and a pupil of Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky. Some of his pen and ink drawings have been successfully published in 'Tierfabeln' by Hans-Winfried von Stockhausen (ed.).

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas Germany, around 1950 Otto Beyer (1885-1962) - German painter and graphic artist Signed lower right 'Otto Beyer' Overall dimensions, framed: 72 x 62.5 cm, stretcher frame: 60 x 51 cm Very good condition Provenance: German private collection As a member of the 'lost generation', the works of Otto Beyer were classified as 'degenerate' in the Third Reich. Today, they are increasingly sought after by art connoisseurs; works by Beyer fetch up to more than 5,000 euros at international auctions This female semi-nude by the German painter and graphic artist Otto Beyer (1885-1962) dates around 1950. This work shows Beyer's typical brushwork with a motif that he frequently depicted at that time. While his early work reflects a strong expressionist style, his late work features post-impressionist influences. Body, face and hair of the female nude appear in a sea of light and dark contrasts; they are immediate projection surfaces of the game of light and colours. This is especially striking in the hair and the face of the woman, whose shadows are pointed out in bright colours. The painting is signed lower right 'Otto Beyer' and mounted in a simple wood frame. The condition is very good, featuring only minimal signs of age. The wood frame is also in very good condition, showing minimal nicks. He was close to the artists of 'Die Brücke' (The Bridge), painting especially landscapes, nude figures and flowers, as well as working as a graphic artist. During his residence at the Pomeranian coast, he met Corinth and Pechstein, who remarkably influenced Beyer's work. Mohamed Drissi (1946-2003), 'Erotic Bar Scene', late 20th C

Lot 12: Mohamed Drissi (1946-2003), 'Erotic Bar Scene', late 20th C

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas Morocco, late 20th Century Mohamed Drissi (1946-2003) - Moroccan painter, graphic artist and sculptor Signed lower right 'Drissi' in Arabic and script Overall dimensions, framed: 88 x 102 cm Very good condition Provenance: German private collection Mohamed Drissi is one of the most important artists in Morocco; his works fetch up to 90,000 euros at international auctions Mohamed Drissi (1946-2003) - one of the most important representatives of the 'art marocain' - has created this expressive oil painting in his characteristic expressionistic style. The look into a night club, where men with stylized faces become voyeurs, exhibits an erotically charged atmosphere. In addition to the interesting subject matter - which seems all the more powerful in a Moroccan context - the expressive combination of colours delights in this painting. The colourful faces, the bright cloth of the barmaid, the multi-hued bottles and the iridescent background merge into an attractive, expressive composition. The painting is signed 'Drissi' in Arabic and in script lower left. The condition of the painting is very good with only minor signs of wear and some craquelure. The white wooden frame is a little damaged in places. The overall dimensions, framed, are 88 x 102 cm. The stretcher frame measures 85 x 99 cm. Mohamed Drissi (1946-2003) Mohamed Drissi was born in the Moroccan city of Tétouan in 1946 and is considered one of the most original painters of his generation. He studied art in Tétouan, Paris, Barcelona, Brussels and New York. His favourite subject matter was the 'human being' and especially the taboo topic of prostitution. In this context, Drissi painted a colourful variety of abstract-expressive paintings of mostly androgynous women's bodies and mask-like heads. However, the faces of Drissi's figures reflect the full range of human emotions, which are enhanced by the postures and gestures. However, the latter have not been idealized, but captured in an expressive and forceful manner. Contrary to the well-known classical depictions, the women's nude bodies are sharply outlined and their mask-like faces are distorted. Drissi deals here with the subject of prostitution, a recurring motif in his oeuvre, yet a topic that remains a taboo in Moroccan society. The painting is signed lower right 'Drissi' in Arabic and in script. The condition of the painting is very good with only minor signs of wear. The canvas is mounted on a thin hardboard plate. The frame is a little chipped on the front side and the edges. The overall dimensions, framed, are 91 x 64 cm. The board measures 81 x 53.5 cm. The expressive power in Drissi's works are reminiscent of the great German Expressionists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Otto Mueller. The works of Egon Schiele and Edward Munch are also brought to mind. Drissi's works fetch record prices at international auctions. The Gallery Mohamed Drissi in Tangier, a contemporary art museum, presents some of his works.

Rahmi 1960' Verso artist's name, date and title of the work 'Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu 1960 Clef Turque' Abstract composition on creased paper Overall dimensions, framed : 80 x 64 cm; sheet size: 71.5 x 56 cm Good condition Provenance: German private collection Only rarely works by this revolutionary Turkish artist appear on the auction market; works on paper of comparable size fetch up to 45,000 euros at international auctions What makes this work of Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu (1911-1975) so special, is clearly evident: This abstract composition titled 'Clef Turque' [Turkish Key] is painted on creased paper, whose folds become the constituent element of the composition. The relief-like surface seems to be created with a spatula or painted. A closer look, however, brings light to the actual manufacturing process. Eyüboğlu follows the style of geometric abstraction. The interplay of colours and shapes becomes the primary parameter of content. The work is signed and dated upper right 'B. Rahmi 1960'. On the back, there is the artist's name, date and title of the work, 'Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu 1960 Clef Turque'. The work is in good condition with some signs of age and wear. Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu (1911-1975) Born in 1911, Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu was one of the founding members of the so-called 'D Group' in 1933, who distanced themselves from the older generation of artists and promoted the development of contemporary art. The artists of the group used new techniques and introduced new motifs, such as themes from the Anatolian region. The 'D Group' rejected the Impressionist style of the Istanbul School represented by artists such as Ibrahim Calli or Hamdi Bey. Instead of the soft shimmering depictions of the Bosphorus, they created hard, geometric lines and abstract curves that were perceived as provocative at that time. From 1937 onwards, Eyüboğlu worked as an assistant of Leopold Levy at the Istanbul Academy. Eyüboğlu should remain at the Academy until his death in 1975. He not only worked as a painter, but also created frescoes, stained glass windows, mosaics and woodcuts. In 1960, he created a work for the NATO headquarters in Paris (now in Brussels). Many of his works are shown in major museum collections in Turkey, but also in the U.S. and in Europe.

In dialogue with nature, the artist creates atmospheric pictorial worlds such as this. Painted on a light background contrasting black lines and grey planes - applied with fast, gestural brush strokes - is given form to a landscape with telephone poles. Here, figurativeness and abstraction merge, creating a particular picturesque aesthetic, reminiscent of Asian ink drawings. Lot 18: E. Gorokhovsky (1929-2004), Watercolour 'House of Cards', 1992

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Watercolour ink and silkscreen on paper Germany, 1992 Gorokhovsky Edward (1929-2004) - one of the most important painters of the Moscow conceptualist movement Signed and dated lower right 'Gorokhovsky 92' Dimensions: 66.8 x 95.5 cm Very good condition Provenance: from a private collection in Berlin (acquired at ARCO Madrid in 2002) An exceptionally fine work on paper by one of Russia's most important conceptualists, in which photography and painting conflate; similar works fetch up to 16,000 Euros at international auctions This fine drawing by Edward Gorokhovsky titled 'House of Cards' was created in 1992 and is part of the artist's later work. Screen prints of photographs - portraits of the 19th Century used as the court card images - have been inserted into a dream-like world of grey watercolour clouds and geometrical hatching patterns. Nude female bodies and angelic figures are hovering in the background, drawn with the finest of pen strokes. Gorokhovsky sees himself as a craftsman, who builds his paintings like sculptures, adding layer upon layer. In Gorokhovsky's oeuvre photography is always the framework, which determines his images and is supplemented and reworked by painterly means such as watercolour, ink or gouache. Thus, abstracted universes emerge in which the photographed lead an almost ghostly existence. The representation is loaded with symbolism and can partly be understood as a metaphor for the loss of individuality within the Soviet regime. The drawing is in very good condition with only minor creases. There are traces of adhesive on the back from previous mounting and minimal foxing. The work is signed in Cyrillic and dated lower right 'Gorokhovsky 92', the reverse is inscribed in Cyrillic lower left, signed lower right, titled and dated as well as annotated by an unknown hand. The sheet measures 66.8 x 95.5 cm. Gorokhovsky Eduard (1929-2004) Gorokhovsky Edward was born in 1929 in Vinnitsa, Ukraine. In 1954 he graduated in architecture at the State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture in Odessa. A year later, he participated for the first time in an exhibition of the Artists' Union of Novosibirsk. Gorokhovsky moved to Moscow in 1973 and has since exhibited regularly in Russia and abroad. From 1991 onwards, he lived and worked in Germany. Gorokhovsky is regarded as the founder of Russian photo-based art, he was one of the first Soviet artists to use photographic material as the basis of his paintings. Today his works are held at the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, the Museum Ludwig in Aachen, the Albertina in Vienna and many other important public collections.

Otherwise there wouldn't be any concept of faith, and no love. But what would we be without these three things?' Immendorff created this Bible and the bronze sculpture of a monkey with a ring in 2006, shortly before his death - a work in which he devoted himself to the question of meaning at the end of his life (one year later Immendorff should die in cause of a muscle disease). The title of the preface is 'Let's reach at the bird of soul', a principle that seems illustrated in the monkey sculpture. The monkey is one of Immendorff's favorite symbols. The artist did not aim for 'illustrations in the traditional sense ', but for a depiction of the 'personal struggle with the essence of human existence'. In this sense, the monkey can be regarded as a reflection of the man who reaches for the ring inscribed with 'God'. It is a kind of struggle to reach salvation - a 'path to the stars through the night into the light'. Book and sculpture are each numbered 857/998. The book cover shows Immendorff's embossed signature. The sculpture base also features the incised signature of the artist. The condition is very good, showing only minimal signs of use. The height of the sculpture is 26 cm (with base 31 cm), the book dimensions being 36 x 25 x 8.5 cm (H x W x D). The acrylic base comes with a metal mounting. Title of the book „Die gute Nachricht. Altes und Neues Testament. Mit den Spätschriften des Alten Testaments (Deuterokanische Schriften / Apokryphen)". Folio. XVII, 931 pages. With 30 colour illustrations by Jörg Immendorff. Gütersloh / Munich, Wissen Media Verlag GmbH, 2006. Jörg Immendorff (1945-2007) Originally from Bleckede in Lower Saxony, Jörg Immendorff studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and created already at the beginning of his career figurative paintings with socio-critical messages. Immendorff developed a new style of history paintings in Germany. In 1976, he took part at the Biennale in Venice. In the same year, he formed a friendship with the German painter A. R. Penck, who at this time still lived in East Germany and was proscribed there. Jörg Immendorff was declared in the 1980s as one of the most important contemporary German artists. Today, works by Immendorff are displayed in high-ranking museums, such as the New York Museum of Modern Art, Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Museum Kunstpalast in Dusseldorf, and the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum in Spain.

Description: Oil on canvas Vienna/Austria, around 1951 Wilhelm Kaufmann (1895-1975) - Austrian painter Signed lower right 'Wilhelm Kaufmann' Verso several labels such as of the Vienna Künstlerhaus with the date 1951, the stamp of the chamber of labour and the address stamp of the artist in Vienna Overall dimensions, framed: 112 x 91 cm, stretcher frame: 100 x 80 cm Very good condition Provenance: Austrian private collection The painter Wilhelm Kaufmann is a well-known Austrian painter from the circle of Oskar Kokoschka; his oil paintings fetch up more than 8,000 euros at international auctions This large impasto painting by Wilhelm Kaufmann (1895-1975) was made around 1951, as documents the exhibition label of the Vienna Künstlerhaus on the back. The famous Austrian painter has succeeded in creating an extraordinary painting in the expressionist style. Kaufmann has captured this view of a Viennese laundry room with bold brushstrokes in muted colours, including accents in red. Two women with aprons and head scarves are seen at work, they wash their clothes in the sink. The individual forms seem to almost dissolve in space, turning into agitated fields of colour. Kaufmann is considered a member of the so-called group of 'colour dynamicists', who generated motion by spontaneous brushstrokes in the image. While his early work still echoes the Academic painting tradition, Kaufmann developed, especially after the Second World War and mostly through the influence of Oskar Kokoschka, an expressive style of painting, which he followed both in landscapes as well as in scenes of daily life, particularly in the city of Vienna. The painting is signed lower right 'Wilhelm Kaufmann' and is in very good condition, showing only minimal signs of age. The paint surface shows some slight craquelure in places and minimal wear, due to the framing. The partly gold-coloured wooden frame is in good condition with some small chips. The overall dimensions, framed, are 112 x 91 cm, the stretcher measures 100 x 80 cm. Wilhelm Kaufmann (1895-1975) Born in Vienna, Wilhelm Kaufmann was admitted as the youngest student at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna at the age of 16. After the First World War, he became a very successful self-employed artist who joined beside Oskar Kokoschka the 'Sonderbund Österreichischer Künstler' and the 'Wiener Hagenbund`, exhibiting his works together with the Vienna Secessionists. From 1945 to 1956, he was head of the section of painting at the Professional Association of Visual Arts. In 1946, he took part in the antifascist exhibition 'Never Forget'. The same year, he was admitted at the Vienna Secession. In 1947, Wilhelm Kaufmann was honored with the Austrian state prize for painting.

Pop art was formed in the 1950s independently in the USA and England and widespread throughout North America and Europe in the 1960s. The motifs of pop art originate from everyday life, the mass media, advertising, and the consumer world. The illustrations are mostly striking and photo-realistic. The forms are - like in Roy Lichtenstein's work - often outlined in black colour, equally to comics, as well as designed in primary colours. Thematically, pop art deals with both the enthusiasm and the criticism of the affluent society of the 1950s and 1960s. In his early work, Roy Lichtenstein was still strongly influenced by Pablo Picasso and his Blue and Rose Period. The first signs of pop art in his work can be found in 1956. The international breakthrough came in 1961 with his work 'Look Mickey'. From the 1980s onwards, he oriented himself back to his roots, which can be found in Surrealism and Expressionism. Roy Lichtenstein exhibited at the documenta in Kassel in 1968 and 1977. In addition to paintings, he created screen and woodblock prints, collages, ceramics and sculptures.

A typical surrealist composition of the Spanish, it shows a dreamlike scene in an indefinite space. On the blurred background in earthy and greenish tones, Miró has depicted playful lines, which connect the schematic symbols displayed by him in bold colours. The blue dog is the center of this floating composition of faces and characters, in which the famous Miró star is not missing. The combination of painterly areas and drawn lines, as well as of muted and bright colours, creates an exciting contrast in the image. Joan Miró has lifelong dealt with the topics of fauna, flora and human being. Since the 1930s, he recurred to corresponding symbols such as stars, comets, sun, insects, flowers, birds and eyes. Miró often addressed with these symbols sexual desire, which, for him, is the motive power of artistic creativity and thus the universe. He attended the art academy La Llotja against his parents' will and later studied at Francesc Galí's art school. In 1917, he met Francis Picabia who introduced him to the Dadaists. However, Miró was also strongly influenced by the Fauves and the Cubists. In 1920, he moved to Paris where he lived amongst the most creative artists of his time. He got to know Arp, Magritte, Brancusi and Giacometti and exhibited together with Dalí, Tanguy, Meret Oppenheim und Max Ernst. He moved to Mallorca in 1956, where he firstly focused on sculptures, later also on ceramics and oil paintings. Miró was confident with all media. He created an extensive oeuvre and is nowadays one of the most sought after exponents of classical modernism. A free and highly symbolic formal language and a poetic composition characterise his work. Today Miró's works can be found in the Guggenheim Museum, MoMA and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Tate Gallery in London and the Albertina in Vienna, as well as in many other museums and public collections all over the world.

Josef Scharl, Oil Painting 'Landscape at Dawn', 1946

Lot 40: Josef Scharl, Oil Painting 'Landscape at Dawn', 1946

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas Germany, 1946 Josef Scharl (1896-1954) - German expressionist painter and graphic artist Signed and dated lower left 'Jos. Scharl 1946' Inscribed on the back 'Landscape at Dawn - Heißer Frühtag Josef Scharl' and labeled 'Landschaft am Morgen - Heißer Frühling' (Hot Spring Day) Catalogue Raisonné by Lukas No. 424 Exhibited in 1976 in the solo exhibition 'Josef Scharl' in the Museum am Ostwall, Dortmund as well as in several other exhibitions Total dimensions, framed: 71.8 x 89 cm Framed in the original, so-called Nierendorf frame Very good condition The oeuvre of Josef Scharl is still a well-kept secret amongst art connoisseurs. This work offers a good opportunity to buy a piece of this artist who exhibited together with such important artists as Max Beckmann, Georg Scholz, Erich Heckel and Karl Hofer in the MoMA in the 1930s. Paintings by Scharl fetch up to 103,000 euros at international auctions The oil painting 'Landscape at Dawn' by the German painter Josef Scharl was created in the year 1946. The artist has painted a spring landscape in a bold colour palette with two large trees with reddish branches and two sunflowers dominating the foreground. The landscape, put together out of many colour fields in green, blue and orange, stretches out behind these up to the high horizon; here and there the fields are interrupted by jungle-like tendrils and blossoms. The sky above is of a bright green that stands out against the far more balanced and muted colours below. This contrast adds an extra tension to the painting and somehow makes one think that there is more to this landscape than just what one sees. Josef Scharl has painted the 'Landscape at Dawn' that has the additional German title 'Heißer Frühling' or 'Heißer Frühtag', meaning hot spring day, in the spring of 1946 - the first spring after the end of the Second World War and the end of the National Socialist dictatorship in Germany. The work can thus be understood as a positive symbol since the artist's life had been characterized by the persecution of the National Socialists and his emigration. The spring of 1946 marked a new beginning without war in Europe. The painting 'Landscape at Dawn' by Josef Scharl is mentioned in the catalogue raisonné by Lukas under the number 424. It has a long exhibition history: Nierendorf Gallery, New York, 1946 Kunstverein, Heidelberg, 1950 Central Art Collecting Point, Munich, 1950 Kunstverein, Cologne, 1951 Galerie Nierendorf, Berlin, 1967 Städtisches Museum, Trier, 1967/68 Kunstverein, Heidelberg, 1968 Galerie Axel Vömel, Düsseldorf, 1968 Museum am Ostwall, Dortmund, 1976 Moderne Galerie im Saarland Museum, Saarbrücken, 1977 The work is signed and dated on the lower left 'Jos. Scharl 1946'. The stretcher frame is inscribed on the reverse on top 'Landscape at dawn - Heisser Frühtag 16', and below 'Josef Scharl'. A label referring to exhibition in 1976 at the Museum am Ostwall, Dortmund notes that is has been a loan from Dr. Kammler-Bewert, Berlin. Here, it is also named ‚Landschaft am Morgen - Heißer Frühling'. The canvas is framed in a frame of two layers of wooden panels. The work is in very good condition except for some craquelure due to the very thick colour application. The total dimensions including the frame are 71.8 x 89 cm. The dimensions of the stretcher frame are 63.5 x 80.7 cm. Josef Scharl (1896-1954) Josef Scharl was born in Munich and began an education as a decoration painter in 1910 at the Malerschule in Munich. He entered the war service in 1915 and could only continue his artistic education after the war was over. He went to the academy in Munich and studied under Heinrich von Zügel und Angelo Jank but left the academy early again. He was a member of the Munich Secession from 1925 to 1928. A scholarship enabled him a longer stay in Paris where he got to know late Impressionism. Back in Germany, he was confronted with the National Socialists' culture politics; his financial situation worsened and finally he was forbidden to paint. Nonetheless, the gallery Neumann-Nierendorf held a solo exhibition of his works in 1933 and another one in 1935 - while in the same year some of his paintings were shown in the exhibition "Entartete Kunst" ("degenerate art") in Nuremberg. When he was invited to take part in an international exhibition in the MOMA in New York together with Heckel, Beckmann, Hofer and Scholz, Scharl's wish to emigrate in the US was reinforced and he did so in 1938. In New York he was supported by Nierendorf and also by Albert Einstein with whom he was on friendly terms. Due to this early emigration, Scharl is less known today in Germany than some of his fellow expressionist. Thanks to the tireless effort of the Nierendorf Gallery, this has began to change during the last years. Works by Josef Scharl are held by the collections of the City Gallery Munich, the National Gallery Munich, the City Gallery Nuremberg and at the German Academy Rome.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Embossed aquatint etching Spain, 1979 Antoni Tàpies i Puig (1923-2012) - Catalan painter, sculptor and graphic artist Signed lower right in pencil 'Tàpies', inscribed lower left 'HC' (Hors Commerce - not for trade) From the series 'U no és ningú' [No One is Nobody] Catalogue raisonné: Galfetti 727 Overall dimensions, framed : 65.5 x 83 cm; sheet size: 56 x 72.5 cm; plate: 34 x 52 cm Good condition Provenance: German private collection A signed artist's exemplar from the great master of the Art Informel; 'U no és ningú' fetches up to 3.000 euros at international auctions 'U no és ningú' [No One is Nobody] is the title of this expressive work of Catalan artist Antoni Tàpies (1923-2012). It is an aquatint etching of a series, which Tàpies created for an artist book with texts and poems by the famous Catalan writer and artist Joan Brossa i Cuervo (1919-1998). The first 157 copies of the book were provided with a separate sequence of prints in larger format. There are also 10 signed 'hors de commerce' copies, one of which we offer here. The prints are based on drawings created by Tàpies between 1950 and 1951 - a period, in which his works show a strong influence of dream interpretation and surrealism. The Brossa's writings are based on his so-called 'visions of the subconscious mind' and have an equally fictional character. With this blood-red aquatint etching, Tàpies created a concise effect - in addition to the surrealist echoes - with a partly painterly and partly sculptural component. Similar to his informal paintings, Tàpies plays with the texture of materials: the malleability of the paper on one hand, and the use of 'foreign substances' - here carborundum - on the other. The sheet is signed lower right in pencil 'Tàpies' and inscribed lower left 'H. C.'. It is mounted on white cardboard on the upper edge, matted and mounted in a frame with poliment silvering. The condition of the sheet is good with minor signs of age and wear. The paper is slightly browned, and shows crease marks and minimal foxing. The frame is in very good condition with only minimal signs of use. The overall dimensions, framed, are 65.5 x 83 cm. The sheet dimensions are 56 x 72.5 cm and the plate measures 34 x 52 cm. Antoni Tapiès (1923-2012) Antoni Tapiès is one of the main representatives of Spanish Art Informel. In the style of the 'pintura matèrica' movement, he mixed materials like sand, cement, marble dust and glue in his paintings, adding letters, symbols and crosses. He taught himself to draw and paint while still at school. Tapiès attended law school for three years, and then studied painting at the Acadèmia Valls in Barcelona. He was among the founders of the art group 'Dau al Set', a movement with links to the Surrealist and Dadaist artists. His interest for philosophy led him to read existentialist literature. Tapiès's works are represented in international museums and were shown at the Venice Biennale and documenta in Kassel. In 1884, Tapiès founded the Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona, where he lived and worked until his death in 2012. In 2010, he was honoured with the title 'Marqués' by the Spanish king Juan Carlos I.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on hardboard Germany, Berlin, 1956 Walter Wellenstein (1898-1972) - Berlin painter and illustrator Signed and dated lower right 'Wellenstein 56' Verso inscribed 'Walter Wellenstein Berlin 1956 / Prima Ballerina / 65 x 52' Overall dimensions, framed: 77 x 64 cm; dimensions of hardboard: 65 x 52.5 cm Good condition Provenance: German private collection Artists, clowns and dancers are typical motifs in Wellenstein's oeuvre; his paintings fetch up to 3,000 euros at international auctions This oil painting titled 'Prima Ballerina' by the Berlin artist Walter Wellenstein (1898-1972) dates to 1956. A typical example of Wellenstein's work of the 50s, this colourful painting depicts a stage-like scenery. The center shows the contours of a transparently dressed ballet dancer. The background and the spatial structure surrounding the moving dancer are presented in the same reduced manner, in which the highlighted prima ballerina is captured. Dynamic shapes - sometimes flat, sometimes linear and angular - make it impossible to identify the room. The composition, defined by dissolved perspectives and coherences, is reminiscent of the cubist canon of forms. The painting is signed and dated lower right 'Wellenstein 56'. The back is inscribed 'Walter Wellenstein Berlin 1956 / Prima Ballerina / 65 x 52'. The condition of the painting is good with only minimal signs of wear, small colour abrasions and stains. The partially silver coloured wood frame is slightly chipped in places. The overall dimensions, framed, are 77 x 64 cm. The dimensions of the hardboard are 65 x 52.5 cm. Walter Wellenstein (1898-1972) From 1918 to 1924 Walter Wellenstein studied under Emil Orlik at the art school in Berlin. His early work is characterised by travel memories and city views. In the 1930s, he developed a fondness for depictions of masks, as well as artistic and bizzare characters. Many of his works show traits of the grotesque - Wellenstein's artistic means to overcome the instability of the time. In the 1950s, Wellenstein was inspired by theatre rehearsals and created stage-like sceneries in paintings with emphasised countours. These paintings often show influences of works by Karl Hofer, Max Beckmann, James Ensor, and Alfred Kubin. Wellenstein also worked as a draftsman and illustrator. His illustrations show a penchant for satirical and caricaturist elements. Due to his publications in the Simplicissimus or the Insulaner, he became known to a wide audience. His illustrations accompanying the complete works of E.T.A Hoffmann, the stories of the Brothers Grimm and the books of Russian writers such as Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky have further contributed to his success.

Description: Oil on hardboard Dominican Republic, 20th Century José Vela Zanetti (1913-1999) - Spanish painter Signed on lower right 'Vela Zanetti' Dimensions: 81 x 98 cm Very good condition Provenance: from the possessions of a German collector from Santo Domingo An eye-catching work of the famous Spanish painter, in the traditional subject matter of sacral art, placed into a new context; the highest hammer price for a painting by the artist on the international auction market is set at 80,000 euros This oil painting by José Vela Zanetti (1913-1999), rendered in Expressionist manner with the cross-carrying Christ, was created during the painter's time in exile in the Dominican Republic. Zanetti has brought his typically tensed visual effect to a climax in this symbol-loaded image. The covered face of Christ, the pointed thorns of his crown, the strongly accentuated folds of his garment, the over dimensionally large cross and the highly contrasting background - all these elements charge the painting to be a dramatic composition, visualising Christ's suffering in an unusual manner. Like in many of his works, Zanetti has given the hands a special visual effect. By means of their powerful and interveined appearance, the often idealised figure of Christ is transformed into an earthen shape in this case, like Zanetti displays them often in his portraits of farmers. The painting is signed on the lower right 'Vela Zanetti'. The condition is very good with merely minimal traces of age and wear. The wooden panel is slightly bumped on the edges. The painting was cleaned during a restoration in 2013, partially slightly mended, varnished, and re-mounted on a verso wooden framed. The dimensions are 81 x 98 cm. José Vela Zanetti (1913-1999) José Vela Zanetti is one of the most meaningful Spanish artists of the 20th Century. A native of Burgos in northern Spain, Zanetti is also known as representative of 'Muralismo' - a special type of wall painting. He completed his art studies in Madrid with his teacher, José Ramon Zaragoza. An educational journey brought him to Italy in 1933. The Spanish Civil War, which broke out in 1936, was to mark him in a cruel manner, because his father was executed because of his socialist political views. In 1939, this event brought Zanetti into exile to the Dominican Republic. There, his great success as a painter and 'muralist'started. He received over 100 commissions for wall paintings from public institutions such as libraries, government buildings and banks. Since 1945, Zanetti also worked as a lecturer at the National Art Academy in Santo Domingo, whose director he became in 1949. With a Guggenheim fellowship in 1951, he spent several years in New York City in the 1950s, where Zanetti's international career began. Also his most well-known work for the UN-headquarters: a wall painting with the title 'The struggle of humanity for a long-lasting peace' (La Lucha del Hombre por la Paz) was created in New York. Zanetti spent the end of his life in his birthplace Milagros in the province of Burgos. His later oeuvre shows a mixture of portraits, still lives, landscapes and religious themes.

Lot 50: José Vela Zanetti (1913-1999), Oil Painting 'Castilian Farmer'

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on hardboard Dominican Republic, 20th Century José Vela Zanetti (1913-1999) - Spanish painter Signed on lower right 'Vela Zanetti' Dimensions: 81.5 x 103 cm Very good condition Provenance: from the possessions of a German collector from Santo Domingo A very touching, intimate portrait of a farmer, whose wise eyes may have seen a lot already; the highest hammer price for a painting of the artist on the international auction market is set at 80,000 euros In this oil painting by José Vela Zanetti (1913-1999), we meet one of the favourite subject matters of the well-known Spanish painter: the farmer. Especially in his early works during the time in the Dominican Republic, he repeatedly returned to this theme, which reminded him with nostalgic thought of his earlier homeland Spain. The fact that Zanetti felt very closely connected to his origin, becomes very eminent in the almost poetically rendered rural portrait. The dreamy look of the farmer's face reaches far into the distance, and gives evidence of wisdom and profundity. Accordingly, every detail is rendered with dignity: the face is shaped by experience, the beret, the warming wool blanket and the Zanetti typical, powerful hands symbolize the most eminent indications of the peasant origin of the sitter. The painting is signed on the lower right 'Vela Zanetti'. The condition is very good with only minimal signs of age and wear. The wood panel is slightly damaged on the edges. The painting was cleaned in 2013 during a restoration, in the marginal areas minimally retouched, varnished and re-mounted on a verso wooden frame. The dimensions are 81.5 x 103 cm. Description: Mixed media (oil, acrylic and chalk) on canvas, in wooden frame Germany, 1998 Hans-Georg Assmann (born 1950) - German painter Signed and dated on upper left 'Assmann `98' Titled, dated and signed on the stretcher frame with 'Zustand `98 Assmann' Overpainting of the painting „Körperlich" from the year 1990 Total dimensions, framed: 166 x 126 cm Very good condition Provenance: German collection A large format work playing on the borderline between abstraction and figurativeness - in "Physial / Condition" contrast play the major role The German painter Hans-Georg Assmann depicts in his painting 'Zustand' (Condition) an anthropomorphic entity in large colour fields in white, grey and red. Singular lines are set in black. In this way Assmann's painting seems abstract at the first glance. At a second view, something of possibly a figural fragment can be recognised, inviting to a closer inspection. Could this painting depict a part of the human body in strong enlargement? Interestingly, the present work is a painting from the year 1990, which has been painted over and back then carried the title 'Körperlich' (Physical). In today's version, alone the upper part is painted over in white; Assmann has set his signature exactly here. The painting, realised in oil, acrylic and chalk on canvas is signed and dated 'Assmann `98' on the upper left, and the stretcher frame is additionally inscribed, dated and signed verso 'Zustand `98 Assmann'. The canvas is mounted in a shadow gap frame, which is painted black on the inside and silver on the outside. The work is in very good condition. The frame displays minimal traces of wear. The dimensions of the stretcher frame are 160 x 120 cm, and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 166 x 126 cm. Hans-Georg Assmann (born 1950) Hans-Georg Assmann originally comes from Wolfsburg. From 1971 on, he studied at a number of universities until he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Braunschweig. In 1981, he was awarded a DAAD fellowship for a one-year residence in London. A number of stays abroad and further fellowships followed. Since 1984, the artist receives continuous financial support within the scope of a German artist aid programme. His works are held by the collections of a number of German museums and international collections, amongst them for example the Saatchi Gallery in London, and the Centre Culturel in Blois (France). Since 1978, a series of national and international exhibitions honour the artistic work of Assmann, the Academy of Arts in Munich for example.
