Prange, ±1942-1960, typescript and manuscript, some w. orig. envelope. = Johannes Marie ("Ko") Prange was a Dutch artist and art critic, best known for his criticism of modern abstract art, expressed in De God Hai-Hai en rabarber: Met het kapmes door de jungle der Moderne Kunst (1957) and numerous articles published in Het Parool. The current archive contains an impressive amount of letters mainly from fellow artists and art critics. [04/11/1925]. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LVIII.

Lot 2746: [Belgium. Antwerp]. Cashbook. Antwerp, 1624-1645,

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: [Belgium. Antwerp]. Cashbook. Antwerp, 1624-1645, pen and ink on paper, paginated/ foliated in old hand: 23p.; 85,(3)lvs., some loosely inserted manuscript notes, contemp. vellum wallet binding w. 3 leather straps and leather ties, "Libro di Compre e Vendite 1606-1607" in pen on frontcover, 36x24 cm. - Last lvs. loose; contents occas. sl. dustsoiled/ stained; several entries crossed out (text still readible). Binding slightly used and with some old stains or worn spots. On the whole in good condition. = Interesting cashbook because of its association with the Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). Several entries (marked in pencil by a later user) are concerned with the families Rubens, Fourment, Lunden and Moons, who were related to the painter by marriage (Rubens married Hélène Fourment in 1630). Most entries are dated after the death of the painter and concern his wife: "Helena Fourment, weduwe van heer Pietro Paulo Rubens" (i.a. f.10), one reading: "geconsulteert op den aanleg van vijfduysent guldens, daarom geantwort [?] int professie huys der Soct. Jesu" (f.24). The cashbook seems the work of a financier, but one entry suggests it might have been compiled by a member of the Rubens family: "Sr. Pieter Ruebens [sic] mijn vader is sguldig" (p.15), followed by a list mentioning several books. Another Antwerp painter who is mentioned in the document is Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641), one entry reading: "Antonio van Dyck is sguldig, die moet hebben voor twee contrefeytsels 300" (p.6). Apart from these intriguing references, numerous other persons and institutions are represented (a few entries in Spanish), some names: "Martin de Wilde", "Gaspar de Vergnies", "Pieter vanden Broeck apotecaris", "Jan van Gindertalen pluymacker tot Brusse", "Franchoys Vallo da Salamanca", "Hendrick Buys", "Jan Di Bartholomeo van Colen", "Rodriguo Aluares Pinto", "'t professie huys der Societeyt Jesu", "Balthasar Doncker Balthasarssone", "Nicolas de Backer, brouwer inden Fortuyn", "Philippe le Roy" and "Gabriel Enriques de Medina". According to a manuscript annotation on verso of the backwrapper, the cashbook was sold at the "Vente Moons Vander Straelen (...) Janvier 1886". SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LVI.
