ALBRECHT DÜRER, (GERMAN 1471-1528), FOUR NAKED WOMEN

Lot 51: ALBRECHT DÜRER, (GERMAN 1471-1528), FOUR NAKED WOMEN

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: ALBRECHT DÜRER (german 1471-1528)/span FOUR NAKED WOMEN 1497, engraving 7 1/2 x 5 3/16 in. (19.4 x 13.2cm) [Bartsch 75] provenance: /spanAn Estate, Pennsylvania.

Condition Report: The (apparently) full sheet, set 'floating' within a mat, framed; sheet size: 7 1/2 x 5 3/16 inches. Parts of top, left and bottom outer edges have partial thread margins. Top edge of sheet is affixed to undermat – because the top edge is very difficult to lift off the undermat it is difficult for us to discern if the top edge verso is affixed to undermat with glue or tape. Verso of sheet with unidentified watermark, annotation in pen: 'fB 1602' (?), various pencil notations and a collector's stamp at lower left corner (we have not checked this stamp to see if it is in Lugt). There is an approx. 5/16 x 3/16 inch repair on verso at bottom edge. Also on verso at bottom right is a repaired area, visible on front of sheet at outer lower right edge. As seen in catalogue photo there is a pinhead size dark spot at lower left, a foxing spot within the '4' at the end of the date at upper center and a larger brown spot at lower right, approx. 1/8 x 1/8 inch. Above left most figure's right foot is a localized area of very pale discoloration. The paper has a heavier feel to it than one might typically see, so we wonder – not certain – if sheet has possibly been backed. There is an approx. 3 inch long printer's crease visible on verso and extending (faintly) through part of figures on recto. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Freeman's Conditions of Sale.

ALBRECHT DÜRER, (GERMAN 1471-1528), PHILIP MELANCHTHON

Lot 52: ALBRECHT DÜRER, (GERMAN 1471-1528), PHILIP MELANCHTHON

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: ALBRECHT DÜRER (german 1471-1528)/span PHILIP MELANCHTHON 1526, engraving 6 15/16 x 5 1/8 in. (17.6 x 13cm) (image) [Bartsch 105] provenance: /spanAn Estate, New Jersey.

Condition Report: Framed and matted; the (apparently) full sheet with margins on all sides, with two tape pieces top edge affixed to a backing sheet of paper, which in turn is taped to undermat. Sheet size: 7 3/16 x 5 1/4 inches. Near center of print, a horizontal hard fold runs through the sheet – it may have been flattened out at some point. There is a restored diagonal fold at upper left corner, approx. 2 3/4 inches long. On verso of each outer edge there are thin paper tape remnants – a larger paper tape remnant on verso of outer right edge of sheet, along with some minor discolored glue residue there. There is some scattered generally minor foxing, localized brownish discoloration and the outlines of some surface stains, the largest at upper left.

ALBRECHT DÜRER, (GERMAN 1471-1528), SAINT SIMON

Lot 53: ALBRECHT DÜRER, (GERMAN 1471-1528), SAINT SIMON

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: ALBRECHT DÜRER (german 1471-1528)/span SAINT SIMON 1523, engraving 4 9/16 x 2 15/16 in. (11.6 x 7.5cm) [Bartsch 49] provenance: /spanAn Estate, Pennsylvania.

Condition Report: Matted and framed; the (apparently) full sheet, with partial thread margins on some of the outer edges; sheet size: 4 9/16 x 2 15/16 inches. The sheet is partially affixed to the undermat with tape tabs verso. The outer edges of the sheet have pale brown toning, and the sheet itself appears to be toned. Areas of the sheet are paler in color vis-à-vis rest of print due to apparent tape tabs on verso coming through to the front of the sheet. There is a tiny darkened area near upper right corner of sheet – with minor associated surface split - and a spot of extraneous ink (we believe) at outer lower left edge of sheet.

Description: ALBRECHT DÜRER (german 1471-1528)/span THE VIRGIN AND CHILD SEATED BY THE WALL 1514, engraving 5 7/8 x 4 in. (14.9 x 10.1cm) [Bartsch 40] provenance: /spanAccording to hand written notations verso, ex-collections: P. Benham, 1602. J. Maberly. M. J. Perry. St. John Dent. An Estate, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Condition Report: Framed and set 'floating' within a mat, the (apparently) full sheet visible, with margins on all sides, with two tape pieces outer right edge verso affixed to undermat. Sheet size: 5 15/16 x 4 1/16 inches. We see no evidence of a watermark. The width of the margins is at slight variance: at widest, each margin is approx. 1/16 inch in width. The right and top margins are wider overall than are the bottom and left margins. There is an approx. 4 5/8 inch diagonal hard fold at upper left. On outer left corners – top and bottom – there are restorations on verso. Scattered minor foxing on verso. Stamps on verso, including 'MJP' and an ink inscription on verso: 'fB 1602' (?) JEAN FRANÇOIS MILLET, (FRENCH 1814-1875), LES GLANEUSES

Lot 58: JEAN FRANÇOIS MILLET, (FRENCH 1814-1875), LES GLANEUSES

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: JEAN FRANÇOIS MILLET (french 1814-1875)/span LES GLANEUSES 1855-1856, etching on Japan paper 7 1/2 x 10 in. (19.4 x 25.4cm) [Delteil 12; Melot 12] provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, Pennsylvania.

Condition Report: Generally good overall condition but fully laid down to cardboard undermat, with margins on all sides. It appears parts of the outer margins at top and bottom are not perfectly symmetrical. There are two small tape pieces at top edge verso – at upper right/left corners – and these tape pieces bleed through somewhat to front of sheet at upper right/left corners. The image itself otherwise appears to be in fine condition. We note some handling creases, including at upper right corner within image, and at upper left, to left of haystacks. There appears to be a harder diagonal fold in the margin at lower right corner. There is some crumplage of the sheet mainly at upper right and upper left margins, likely due to the placement of the tape pieces and the manner in which the sheet is laid down to the cardboard. Most of the sheet lays flat to the backing cardboard but there are the above flaws visible. The image itself appears to be generally crisp and without restoration Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports.

Description: JEAN FRANÇOIS MILLET (french 1814-1875)/span LE DEPART POUR LE TRAVAIL 1863, etching laid to card 15 1/4 x 12 3/16 in. (38.7 x 31cm) [Delteil 19; Melot 19] provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Condition Report: Entire sheet is affixed to card - apparently with glue. Sheet has (apparently) full margins; pale light staining. Areas of print, mostly in the sky, have a streaky appearance, likely due to the epoxy on verso coming through to front of sheet. There are also some lighter, whitish think 'streaks' visible in image, mostly in top approx. 1/2 of print. There is a foxing spot in the upper right corner and a larger brown spot at upper right at platemark edge. There is some extraneous printer's ink at upper center and outer center right. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging.
