Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Harry Herman Roseland American, 1866-1950 In the Pea Field, 1887 Signed Harry Roseland and dated 87. (ll) Oil on canvas 14 1/2 x 20 inches In the Pea Field, by Harry Roseland, depicts a bygone era in what is now downtown Brooklyn. A lifelong resident of the borough, Roseland painted several renditions of pea pickers (including the present work) around 1887-1888, winning a gold medal at the Brooklyn Art Club in 1887 for a related composition, Pea Pickers of Long Island. Indeed, agricultural scenes, depicting laborers engaged in agricultural activities, were among the earliest themes that established his reputation. Roseland was known to have visited the historic Nicklaes Schenck farm in Canarsie, where he painted Gossip in the Pea Field as well as Telling her Fortune. It is possible that the present work, exploring a related subject, may have been painted at the same location. C

Description: Benjamin Champney American, 1817-1907 View Near Conway, New Hampshire, 1881 Signed B. Champney and dated 1881. (ll) Oil on canvas 20 x 32 1/8 inches Provenance: Daniel Nute Stanton, New Jersey Thence by descent in the family to the current owner This beautifully realized landscape of the White Mountain countryside, with the village of Conway nestled in a valley, was one of three paintings commissioned from Champney by Daniel Nute Stanton. Both artist and client were New Hampshire natives. Stanton was born in Bartlett, New Hampshire, roughly nine miles from Conway, entered the railroad construction business in his youth, and was involved in the construction of several railroads, including the Boston, Hartford & Erie; the Portland & Ogdensburg; and the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western, eventually serving as president of the Alabama & Chattanooga Railroad. Champney, born in New Ipswich, New Hampshire, pursued his education in Boston and Europe, visiting Conway in 1850 and eventually building a home nearby. It is not known how the two men became acquainted. An early and leading proponent of the White Mountain School, Champney painted many views of the area, frequently melding panoramic vistas with carefully rendered detail, as in the present work. C

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Sanford Robinson Gifford American, 1823-1880 Flower Study Signed indistinctly S. R. G...ord at lower right and dated Dec. 27th 1865 on the reverse; incised Mary Jane Peale on the stretcher Oil on canvas 11 x 9 inches Provenance: Joseph Katz, Baltimore, MD Leslie Katz, New York City Thence by descent in the family Like many of the nation's mid-century landscape painters--Frederic Church, John F. Kensett, Fitz Henry Lane, Jasper Cropsey, David Johnson, and others, Sanford Gifford gave almost all of his professional attention to his chosen genre. It is therefore all the more exciting when one comes across such artists' rare excursions into other themes, such as Cropsey's almost singular Green Apple (private collection). Sanford Gifford, too, throughout his career created magnificent landscapes and with few exceptions only landscapes. Gifford painted a few family portraits early in his working life, and returned to the portrait theme a few times in 1878. Only in his final year, 1880, is there a small body of other alternative subjects--a single genre painting, Twilight, and a few still lifes. One cannot be sure if these signal new artistic interests or reflect the artist's deteriorating physical condition in his last summer, leaving him unable to pursue new landscape subjects. That year he also painted a number of pictures based upon earlier outings, both Catskill scenes and images derived from his earlier travels to Venice, Constantinople, and Greece, most importantly his great Ruins of the Parthenon (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York). In 1881, The Metropolitan Museum of Art published A Memorial Catalogue of the Paintings of Sanford Robinson Gifford, N. A., a listing of 731 works by the artist. While such catalogues, compiled soon after an artist's death are almost necessarily incomplete--the aforementioned 1880 still lifes are not included though the portraits and genre painting are-the vast bulk of the publication is--of necessity-devoted to landscapes. That is true, except for two still lifes and only two still lifes: #338, A Sketch of Flowers, and #459, A Study of Pears (partial and promised gift to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D. C.). (The catalogue uses the terms "sketch" and "study" not to indicate incompleteness but rather more to denote smaller works). The floral piece, though with a date of December 27, 1865 on the back of the canvas, is dated in the catalogue to 1863; the fruit picture is not dated but is listed as sold to one John T. Wilson in 1867. These would appear, then to be the only still lifes painted by Gifford at the height of his career. What led Gifford to paint these rare works cannot be known. Perhaps they were done at a time when he momentarily turned away from landscape or more likely, and perhaps in discussion with colleagues, decided to test his abilities at this genre. Landscape painters particularly, involved as they were and are with Nature, were more likely to paint an occasional still life, which was true also not only of Cropsey, but David Johnson, Benjamin Champney, and other landscapists. If testing his abilities in this otherwise foreign genre was his purpose, Gifford succeeded brilliantly. Though a small work, his floral mix is rich with various blooms, the fragile petals beautifully rendered and colored, and the white vase solidly supporting the bouquet, and fascinating in itself in its bulbous form and sinuous decoration. The style most closely approximates that of George Henry Hall, appropriately enough since Hall was New York's finest still-life specialist at the time. And interestingly, too, the two still lifes suggest that Gifford was involved with contrasting aesthetics, since the floral piece is tightly rendered, while the two pears are executed in what for the period would have been considered a more "painterly" style. As mentioned, Gifford sold the fruit still life, but the Flower Study remained in the family. When the catalogue was published it was owned by his sister Julia and her husband, Robert Wilkinson, of Poughkeepsie, New York. We thank Dr. William H. Gerdts for his kind assistance in confirming the attribution of the present work, and for contributing this essay. C Estate of Leslie and Jane Katz
