Following the Parisian bohème, the artists intended a fusion of their senses with the arts which was accompanied by a radical rejection of the normal, bourgeois life. French writers such as Baudelaire and Flaubert were read with great interest, whereas the artists also reflected the ideas of Symbolism. The present work shows a charming portrait of a lady and is a late piece by Conconi, which he probably executed around 1900. The painting is in good condition considering its age and it is framed behind glass. The work is executed on a wooden panel. The edges show slight framing marks as well as minor material loss at the lower margin. The work is signed 'LConconi' at the lower left. On the verso, a label reads 'Galleria Pesaro Milano'. His style is influenced by Impressionist features, but his deeper interest was especially directed to the depiction of fantastic and mystical themes and the representation of women. Conconi also worked as an etcher and produced landscapes, marines and fantasy pieces as well as architectural vedute. Gorbatov was a student of the Impressionist painter Nikolay Nikanorovich Dubovskoy. He presents in this painting a view of the famous Russian Monastery Novodevichy in Moscow. He skillfully placed coloristically differentiated layers of paint. Here and there the earthy colors of the ground and the trees appear under the loosely executed, bluish snow cover, and so do the clouds that are spread over the entire sky. The roofs of the monastic buildings, which belong to the style of Moscow baroque, illuminate in varying shades of green. Particularly striking is the polygonal red-brick building, executed in light impasto paint application, behind which the image of the Smolensky Cathedral with its characteristic 5 domes appears in the center of the image. Next to it stands the bell tower illuminated by the sun. The subject of the monastery can be found in several paintings Gorbatovs. The historic building is one of the most famous landmarks of the Russian country which was founded in 1524 by the Grand Duke Vasili III. Due to the close connections to wealthy families it was able to gain power and wealth. After the death of Tsar Fyodor Ivanovich in 1598 his widow Irina retired in the convent as a nun. Likewise, her brother Boris Godunov was appointed Tsar in the same year. The monastery is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and houses a Museuem in one part of the convent. In 1895 he attended the technical drawing school of Baron Stieglitz in St. Petersburg. In 1904, he joined the architecture class at the Academy of Arts, however, he decided a year later to join the painting class instead. There he studied from 1905 to 1911 under the Impressionist painter Nikolay Nikanorovich Dubovskoy, who stylistically influenced his work, which always followed the Impressionist way of painting. During this time, he also created some graphic works for a satirical magazine he used to work for. A scholarship enabled him a study trip to Rome. An invitation of the Russian writer Maxim Gorky, led him to the island of Capri, followed by a trip through large parts of Europe. Back in Russia, he painted landscapes, views of cities and small towns in the north of the Volga. The Island of Capri, where he later lived for several years, often appeared as subject in his paintings. In 1926, Gorbatov settled in Berlin, where he achieved great success as a painter in the beginning. With the rise of the Nazi regime and the corresponding understanding of art in Germany it became increasingly difficult to work. A departure was impossible, so that stayed in Berlin till the end of the war, living sickly an in poverty. After his death in 1945 Gorbatov bequeathed all his works to the Academy of Arts in Leningrad, eventually they were stored and exhibited at the Moscow State Museum of History and Art in the New Jerusalem Monastery. The painting was created in 1934, while the artist was living at his dacha in Bugry and intensively devoted himself to portraiture. During this time he created numerous portraits of family members as well as prominent cultural figures. In his portraits Petr Konchalovsky centered on the psychological expression and less on the material or manner of painting. His focus primarily lay with capturing the internal state of the sitter and his character. The viewer recognizes this profound interest in the present portrait of Konchalovsky's younger brother Dmitri, who worked as a historian, philologist and professor of history and law of ancient Rome. As the central figure Konchalovsky placed him on a throne like a cardinal. The presentation focuses on the face, on its profound and thoughtful expression, which is enhanced by the monumental size of the image. The use of intense purple, complemented by a deep black and a balanced red-brown color scheme endows the portrait with dignity and severity. In his diaries, the artist mentions his desire to achieve 'a simplified synthesis of color', which lead him to a new subtlety in his color composition. The above mentioned aspects make the 'Portrait of the brother' one of the most important works of this genre within Konchalovsky's oeuvre. The painting is in overall very good condition. In the lower right area of the painting there are a few small retouched spots It is signed in Cyrillic and dated upper right 'P. Konchalovsky / 1934', further signed 'P. He traveled to Italy, France and Spain. From 1908 onwards Konchalovsky took part in various exhibitions and was a member of several artists' groups. In Paris, he exhibited his works at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Indépendants. In 1911 he was one of the founders of the Russian artist group 'Jack of Diamonds', one of the most important groups of the Russian avant-garde. Description: Oil on panel Germany, circa 1950 Bruno Krauskopf (1892-1960) - German painter, member of the 'Novembergruppe' Signed 'B. Krauskopf' lower right Brown gallery frame Overall dimensions framed: 98 x 64.5 cm Very good condition Provenance: acquired at Villa Grisebach, Berlin, auction no. 61 on 29/11/1997, Cat. no. 799, illustration on page 42 Self-critical portrait of the artist in a toga, executed in intense colors; large-format oil paintings by Krauskopf from this period fetch up to 20,000 euros at international auctions The present painting by the German painter Bruno Krauskopf (1892-1960) is a self-portrait of the artist. Dressed in a toga, Krauskopf presents himself with a serious, self-aware facial expression. The portrait exhibits the artist's quintessentially expressive style; the body and face are rendered with powerful broad brushstrokes with dark outlines. The partly nude torso, painted in red and orange, stands out against the indistinct background in muted shades of blue, gray and green. The linearity of the composition as well as the intense use of color create an insistent effect of vigorous intimacy. During his stay in New York Krauskopf realized several similar self-portraits in which he depicted himself not as a successful artist but as a human being - distant yet determined. The painting is overall in very good condition. It shows minor craquelure and scattered tiny losses of color (barely noticeable).
