Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: [Milan]: [J.A. Scinzenzeler], 1508. 9.75" x 7.75". 10, 88 leaves, (the two index leaves bound before text in this copy), map of Africa (second issue, with "Arabicus" replacing "P[er]sicus"). Finely bound in early to mid-20th C. red morocco with title in gilt to spine, boards and dentelles ruled in gilt, and all edges in gilt. A few minor rubs to leather, engraved bookplate of Samuel Radbill to pastedown, two catalogue clippings tipped onto ffe, lower margin of map creased as folded for binding, first three leaves with stain to upper margin and last five leaves with corner stains, inner/upper margin with light and faded stain that occurs on most pages throughout though often imperceptible, a very bright and clean copy overall with only minor flaws. A splendid example of this rare work. ****** First Edition in Latin which Sabin notes is of "excessive rarity" and comments that "After Columbus' letters, this is the most important contribution to the early history of American discovery." The first Latin edition is the only edition with a map. The work was first printed in Italian in 1507 and was translated into Latin by Archangelo Madrignano and printed the following year. In addition to the accounts of the exploration of the Americas, important accounts of voyages in Africa and Asia are included. Known as "the most important vehicle for the dissemination throughout Renaissance Europe of the news of the great discoveries both in the East and the West" ( Printing and the Mind of Man), the most important voyages in this work include: the first three voyages of Columbus; the third voyage of Vespucci to Brasil, 1501-1502, Pedro Alvares Cabral's discovery of the Brasilian, Guianaian, and Venezuelan coasts in 1500-1501; Alvise de Cadamosto's explorations along the West African coast in 1456 (printed for the first time); and Vasco da Gama's explorations of Africa and India, 1497-1499 which "opened the way for the maritime invasion of the East by Europe" (PMM). The map is the first map to depict Africa surrounded by water, and one of the earliest appearances of Mecca on a printed map. An excellent example of a work of great importance. We assess this copy to have last appeared at auction at Sotheby's on July 24, 1939 (lot 176), and it has remained (handed down) in the same private collection since then. Harrisse 58; Sabin 50058; Church 27; PMM 42 (1507 ed.) ****** NOTE: AN ADDITIONAL SUITE OF PHOTOS IS AVAILABLE BY CONTACTING US AT books@AddisonsAuction.com.
