One example has extended fingers and is from the late New Kingdom - 3rd Intermediate Period, c. 1292 - 945 BC, and the second is clenched around the handle of an implement, Late Period, c. 664 - 30 BC. Description: A pair of busts from Egyptian terracotta fertility 'dolls,' Late Middle Kingdom - 2nd Intermediate Period, c. 1759 - 1570 BC, each with bird-like features and holes in the head for the attachment of hair, usually in a more perishable substance such as wool or plant fiber. The shorter head with holes for earrings and a wide collar, the other with a thick collar above her pointed breasts, scarification over shoulders. H: 1 5/8" (4.1 cm). Both mounted on custom bases. Interesting handmade terracottas blending Western Asiatic and Egyptian culture. Ex Nomis Antiquities; Ex Los Angeles private collection. Terracotta fertility "dolls" are noted from burials in Egypt dating from the 12th through 18th Dynasties and appear to have been placed in the graves to ensure the rebirth and fertility of the deceased in the next world.
