Manner of Albert Bierstadt Architectural Fantasy

Lot 9: Manner of Albert Bierstadt Architectural Fantasy

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Manner of Albert Bierstadt Architectural Fantasy Bears signature ABierstadt (ll) Oil on canvas 27 x 36 inches Provenance: Robert L. Claridge, Kalispell, MT, 1983 Stanford University Museum of Art, Palo Alto, CA This intriguing panoramic image has in the past been attributed to Albert Bierstadt. The scene appears to be an imaginary architectural scheme, but it has yet to be linked with a particular location. Perhaps with such works as Thomas Cole's The Architect's Dream (1840, Toledo Museum of Art, OH) in mind, the artist depicted a walled enclosure around a single column. Beyond cleared fields, a parish church and other buildings stand in the shadows, while the trees of an orchard are arrayed in neat rows. At one time the scene had been identified as Project for a Washington Monument in the City of Baltimore but this has not been substantiated. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Abraham Jacob Bogdanove Russian/American, 1887-1946 The Lone Tree, Crow's Nest, Mohegan Stamped Estate of/Abraham Bogdanove/Stamped by/Spanierman... on the reverse Oil on canvas 40 x 50 inches Provenance: Estate of the artist Born in Minsk, Russia, Bogdanove settled with his family in New York as a teenager. He studied art at the National Academy of Design and Cooper Union and architecture at Columbia University, eventually specializing in mural decoration while teaching at the New York Evening School of Industrial Art. Beginning in 1918, he became one of the veteran summer artists on Monhegan Island, Maine. There working at the water's edge from morning to night, he painted directly with a physical fortitude that few other artists could match. In this image, what intrigued him was a sinuous yet hardy tree-one of few on in this stark landscape-standing sentinel-like over a calm sea. He captured its vitality with delicate yet firm strokes, contrasting it with the solidity of the rocky outcropping below. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC

Description: Paul de Longpre French/American, 1855-1911 Chrysanthemums, 1906 Signed Paul de Longpre and dated Los Angeles. 1906 (lr) Watercolor on paper 14 7/8 x 20 inches Provenance: Private collection Born in Lyons, France Paul de Longpre came from a family of fleuristes, including his older brother Raoul. He began his career as a painter of flowers on silk for the famous textile looms of Lyons. By 1876, he was painting flowers, a profession he continued after imigrating to New York City in 1890. Eight years later, he settled in Los Angeles, where he drew his subject matter from the famous three-acre garden he created at the Moorish-Mission style villa he built in Hollywood. (In 1910, the film producer D. W. Griffith rented a portion of it for his film, Love among the Roses.) His command of the watercolor medium is apparent in this montage of cut chrysanthemums, in which he recorded the botanical details of his subject with precision, while rendering it in a delicate, painterly style to express its beauty. Description: Vincent Jannelli American, 1882-1962 View Across the Newark Rooftops to New York, 1934 Signed Vincent Jannelli and dated 1934 (lr) Oil on canvas 30 1/8 x 46 inches Provenance: Private collection Jannelli imigrated to the United States from his native Italy in 1898. Settling in Newark, New Jersey, he taught for two decades at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art. Although he painted landscapes and portraits, his most distinctive works are his cityscapes in which he depicted vistas from roof-top vantage points. Among his most expansive images, this view spans a colorful "sea" of low Newark building tops, punctuated by treetops and water towers, extending to the taller structures of downtown Newark and beyond to the Manhattan skyline, where the silhouette of the Empire State Building can be discerned along with towering structures clustered around Wall Street. The distant form of the State of Liberty is visible in the right background. In such images, Jannelli reminds us of the quiet world of its own existing above the noise and bustle the urban street.
