Jean Louis Forain, Pierrot et danseuse, c. 1920

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: Jean Louis Forain, 1852-1931, was a French Impressionist painter who began as the protege of Edgar Degas. Forain joined the Impressionists in 1879; and participated in three out of the four highly pivotal, landmark exhibitions between 1879 and 1884. In keeping with the Impressionist School, he preferred subjects of everyday life and culture in Paris. This beautiful painting is one such fine example, depicting the ballet in Paris. In fact, his deep love of the ballet was something else he shared in common with Degas. Forain captures the essence of Impressionist light, form and color here, providing the viewer with an 'impression' of what he was seeing and painting at the time. Forain was made a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London; and was one of France's best known and revered artists during his time. He certainly helped shape and bridge the art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His work is in private and public collections and museums worldwide. This painting is framed; and is accompanied by a certificate by Florence Vallois.

Andre Derain, Portrait de femme au foulard, c. 1934-1939

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: Andre Derain, 1880-1954, was a French painter who was a founding member of the Fauvist movement in the early 20th century. He worked closely with contemporaries like Vlaminck and Matisse, showing their radically innovative paintings at the Salon d'Automne. Derain's later work features more subtle tones and subjects such as portraiture and still life. The role of color was reduced and the forms became austere. Inspired by his friendship with Pablo Picasso, Derain's later post-Fauve works show an engagement with both classicism and Cubism, and this 'classical' style earned him widespread recognition throughout Europe and the US. His work is in private and public collections and many acclaimed museums worldwide. This particular painting is a wonderful example of Derain's late work. Here, he features a beautiful, classical portrait of a woman. It bears his signature in the lower right corner; and the painting is also listed and included in the Catalog Raisonne of Derain's works, as well: Michel Kellermann, Andre Derain: Catalogue Raisonne de l'oeuvre peint, vol. III, Paris, 1999, no. 1714, p. 95, illustrated.

Maximilien Luce, River Droite de la Seine, Rolleboise, c. 1921

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: Maximilien Luce, 1858-1941, was a French painter who began working in the Divisionist technique, in the Pointillist style. By 1887 Luce joined the Societe des Artistes Independants, with Neo-impressionist contemporaries like Pissarro, Signac and Seurat and Guillaumin. With the exception of the years during World War I, Luce exhibited in every show at Les Independants from 1887 until he died in 1941. He was even given a 30 year retrospective in 1926. In the early part of the 20th century, his affinity with Neo-impressionism began to dissipate and he resumed painting in an Impressionist manner again. While he depicted a range of subjects, Luce very frequently created landscapes. This is one such landscape, circa 1921, after his identification with Neo-impressionism began to dissolve and shift back to the Impressionist manner. His brushwork and sense of color here, is just wonderful. The painting is signed on the lower left; and the piece is also listed in the Catalog Raisonne of Luce's paintings as well: Denise Bazetoux, Maximilien Luce, Catalogue raisonne de l'oeuvre peint, vol. III, Paris, 2005, no. 1650 , p. 317, illustrated. Just some of the public collections containing Luce's work include such revered museums as: Art Institute of Chicago, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Musee d'Orsay, among many others.

Joe Amrhein, A Cacophony, 2001

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: Joe Amrhein is an American artist, b. 1953, from Sacramento, California. He is currently based in Brooklyn, New York. Amrhein works mainly with text on a variety of media. He is currently represented by Jochen Hempel Gallery in Berlin and Leipzig; and he has exhibited widely in Europe and the US. This piece from 2001 is made available from a Private Collection who collected his work early on. It features 10 plates, 6 x 30 in. (15.2 x 76.2 cm.) each. The dimensions once installed are approximately: 72 x 30 in. (182.9 x 76.2 cm.). Amrhein used enamel and gold on glass for this work; and he's titled it, "A Cacophany". Artist Statement: "My work is a combination of different disciplines? physically, it comes out of painting but the context is conceptual. I use language, text, and font icons as my primary subject with reference to sign painting which gives this language scale and vitality and comes out of my background as a sign painter. The materials I paint on, glass and vellum, besides being traditional surfaces for signs, give me the option to develop the text with a metaphorical contentnotions of density, fracturing, memory and shadows as ephemera, among others. The source for most of the text in this work is appropriated, critical art writing, magazines, newspapers and other sources. The notion that this language replaces the context is describing and replacing an idea or something concrete with abstract language is very interesting to me, but bringing this abstract notion of language back into a visual art is even more interesting. The use of translation, cyphers and codes and the fallibility of perception is new to the work. Quoting Robert Smithson, 'One must remember that writing on art replaces presence by absence by substituting the abstraction of language for the real thing.' Some of the text I compose is not meant to be read but is used almost as an artifact, because it is so highly fragmented." - Joe Amrhein.

Melissa Marks, Volitia Avoids Puncture, 1999

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: Melissa Marks is a New York based artist whose body of work exploits the flexible structure of "serial context in collusion with the act of drawing" in order to explore ideas about character, performance, Pop, Nature, and Abstraction. The calligraphic gesture and deliberate line exercise an energetic form of visual self-talk, referencing sources as diverse as American comics, Contemporary Japanese Anime, High-Renaissance Fresco cycles, Van Gogh, Monet, Matthew Barney, Sol LeWitt, Edo-period woodcuts and Chinese scroll painting. Veering between the graphic extremes of full color and black & white, subjects include battle, paradise, water, transience and satisfaction. This piece entitled, "Volitia Avoids Puncture" from 1999, features what is perhaps Marks' most famous subject. Volitia is an invented female character and alter-ego who has been the central protagonist of the artist's work since the early 1990s. The name Volitia comes from the word volition or "the act of making a choice or decision." Volitia's actions are not determined by some larger power but through her own choice and desires. The works are a wonderful, elaborate visual story; and this is one such example. The paper size is 14 x 33 inches, and the piece comes professionally framed. The framed size is 19 x 38 inches. Mark's solo exhibitions include Bloomberg Space, London; Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery, NY; Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, CT and Joya: arte + ecolog?a, Cortijada Los Gazquez, Spain. Her work has been included in exhibitions at PS1/Moma, NY; Artspace, CT and The Drawing Center, NY.

George Stoll, A Suite of Five, 1996

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: George Stoll, b. 1954, is an American artist who lives and works in Los Angeles. Stoll fabricates by hand that which is factory-produced and presents these everyday objects, ie: sponges, tupperware, toilet paper, paper towels, etc. en mass, creating evocative installations that ask us to reconsider that which we take for granted. Stoll has continued to create reproductions of ordinary household objects, transforming them into extraordinary works of art. Much like Andy Warhol or Jasper Johns, Stoll is interested in the relationship of high art to consumer culture. It is upon close examination the viewer realizes that these are not store-bought objects assembled together, but carefully cast and sculpted objects. The tromp l'oeil effect is important to Stoll, but he also allows the human element--the artist's hand--to enter into his work. Stoll's art is found in such public collections as the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, Brandeis University-Rose Art Museum, University of Washington-Henry Art Gallery, Seattle Art Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. We present here, this suite of works on paper called, "A Suite of Five". The work dates from 1996, and employs colored pencil on vellum. The suite is comprised of five works, each are 12 x 12 inches.

Glenn Goldberg, O.P. 88, 1988

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: Glenn Goldberg is an American artist who is based in New York. Goldberg has exhibited extensively in the United States for over 30 years. His works are a part of a number of distinguished public collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Goldberg's tools-in-trade are elemental: dots, patterns, and symbolic, iconic representations of birds, trees, flowers. His work, and ideas, are ethereal. His painting is about this meeting point of the ordinary and the other, regularity and refinement. Repetitive mark-making becomes a focused, meditative practice, and a basic indexical sign is transformed into a richly charged visual field. This is a work on paper titled, "O.P. 88", featuring pencil, ink, paint and collage work as well. The paper size is 17 x 12 inches, though it does come professionally matted and framed. The framed size is: 25 x 20 in. The verso bears labels from Barbara Krakow Gallery and M. Knoedler & Co., as it was shown and featured by both those galleries.

David Armstrong, Rene at His Apartment on 12th Street, 1980

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: David Armstrong (1954-2014) was a photographer based in New York. Armstrong first received critical attention for his intimate portraits of men, often lovers or friends, in sharp focus. He continued his body of work exploring the often overlapping worlds of gay men, drug addicts, transvestites, fashion models and artists. But Armstrong was best known for unabashed black-and-white close-ups of beautiful young men; again, many of whom were his lovers or objects of his desire. This B&W photo is one such excellent example. It is titled, "Rene at His Apartment on 12th Street." His ability to capture raw intimacy enthralls and fascinates the viewer. His photographs are in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum in New York, the archives of many high-fashion magazines and at least five books of his collected work. He exhibited his work internationally, both in one-man shows and in collections with other members of the Boston Group.

Jeremy Blake, Berkshire Fangs, 2001

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: Jeremy Blake (1971-2007) was an American digital artist and painter. After gaining the art world's attention in the 1990s with large scale, semi-abstract digital C-prints, he then began to animate sequences of these images to create continuously looping digital video works. They were meant to emulate paintings and film. Blake's aesthetically stylized works addressed a range of subjects from violence and terrorism to glamour and decadence, from metaphors of architectural spaces to profiles of cultural personifications. He was a narrative abstractionist who embraced history, pop culture, biography and fiction, and he always made things to be beautiful. His works are seductive; his subjects are provocative; his meanings are profound. This work of art, entitled, "Berkshire Fangs" is a 16 minute continuous loop of digital animation with sound on DVD. There is a Master DVD disk that is titled, dated, numbered and signed by the artist, along with a reciprocally editioned Collector's Viewing disk that is to be used for playing. Both disks are in specially designed cases. The artwork is accompanied by a certificate, as well. The certificate is written and issued by Feigen Contemporary, NYC; and is signed and dated (01.15.02) by the artist. Also included is the storyboard for the animation that is printed on archival paper for keeping as it is or possible framing. The storyboards highlight the visual sequences in Blake's work and this serves as a reference. Blake's works have been exhibited internationally. They were included in three Whitney Biennials, are represented in many museum collections.

Description: Kim Fisher is an American artist, b. 1973, from New Jersey. She is currently based in Los Angeles, California. Kim Fisher's painting evokes the ethos of collage, even if collage itself is not literally part of the work. The artist deftly renders her compositions through a methodical process of layering oil on linen. Her workmanship with her brush, composition and pallet result in an intentional disorienting effect on what first appears to be seemingly simple, single-color painting. This work is painted with oil on linen, from 1999-2000, and is 18 x 18 inches. It is titled, "Study for Gemstone."

Dennis Hollingsworth, Lafayette, 1996

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: Dennis Hollingsworth (1956-) is a Spanish-born artist, now based in Los Angeles, CA. His work fuses abstraction with a pop sensibility. When he paints, his pieces have a sculptural quality and a low relief - an effect he achieves by using thick impasto to build spikes of paint and textured surfaces. Hollingsworth was quoted, "My efforts toward the fullest dimension of intellectuality in art is to read widely and try to learn as much as I can about different things. But I don't want to express ideas in a linear way in my work. What I try to do is absorb them and try to sweat them out. I don't want them to come out in a dumbed down in a merchandized kind of way. I want content to come out of my pores. I want to incorporate them deeply." This intriguing work on paper titled, "Lafayette," is from 1996. The paper size is 12 x 9 inches, and it comes professionally framed. He demonstrates such depth and complexity in this composition, using sumi ink on paper.

Julian Lethbridge, Les Demoiselles, 1988

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: Born in Sri Lanka, raised in England, Julian Lethbridge (1947-) moved to New York to paint and draw in 1972. His first exhibition of paintings and drawings at Julian Pretto Gallery (1988) was quickly followed by solo exhibitions at Paula Cooper Gallery in New York and Daniel Weinberg Gallery in San Francisco. Lethbridge's abstraction is cerebral, often based on mathematical or natural principles. Methodically building up his surfaces with pigment, he then incises them with repeated patterns. In the late 1980s and early 1990s Lethbridge limited his work to shades of black and white, mining the richness of monochromatic painting. This work on paper titled, "Les Demoiselles", is one such prime example from 1988. The paper size is 20 x 19 5/8 inches; and it comes professionally framed. It is initialed and dated, "JL 88" in the lower right corner. The viewer can even sense the artist invoking Picasso's "Les Demoiselles" perhaps. Lethbridge's work has been widely exhibited throughout the United States and Europe and can be found in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Tate Gallery in London, The Art Institute of Chicago, and The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.

Description: Julian Opie, b. 1958, is a British artist who presents a very distinct reductive style of graphic figuration. The towers can be displayed as a group on a floor or on a pedestal. "Tourist 2" is part of a small sculpture series of city buildings, that Opie pursued in 2000: "Tourist 1," "Tourist 2," "Tourist 3" and "Tourist 4." Description: Hunter Reynolds, b. 1959, is an American visual artist and AIDS activist based in Los Angeles. For almost thirty years, Reynolds has been working to express his experience as an HIV-positive gay man living in the age of AIDS. His work has engaged with gender identity, body politics, personal and sexual histories, mourning, loss, survival, hope and healing. In his work, one sees the artist's particular strength at forging hope and beauty out of the sometimes dark totality of life. Amidst his large body of work in varying mediums such as performance, photography and installations, Reynolds is also keenly known for some of his large-format works called "photo-weavings." These are formed by physically sewing together hundreds of smaller photographs. Though stunningly beautiful, the photographs that make up these pieces often document emotionally difficult and trying subject matter. This is one such example title, "Love Light" from the early 1990's. Hunter Reynolds has exhibited his work at museums and galleries widely in the US and abroad. He has been the recipient of many grants residencies including a Pollock Krasner Grant. As an AIDS activist, he was an early member of ACTUP and in 1989 co-founded Art Positive, an affinity group of ACT-UP, to fight homophobia and censorship in the arts.

Michael Scott, Untitled (Kaminski's-- Cocktails, Luncheon, Dinner), 1998

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: Michael Scott, b. 1958, is an American artist based in NY. In 1986, he began to work on a series of concentric circle or target paintings. Heavily influenced by the date paintings of On Kawara, the Japanese artist, he wanted to create a body of work in which no painting was better or worse than another one. In the summer of 1988, after seeing a man wearing a seersucker suit in New York City, he had the idea to make a painting of parallel lines that would be so optical that in theory it would be impossible to look at. Themes like the stripe, the line, the geometric, and linear forms are signature to his paintings, as seen here in "Untitled (Kaminski's-- Cocktails, Luncheon, Dinner)" from 1998. This piece is 17 x 44 inches; and it is signed and dated on the reverse. Through an intensely systematic approach and utilization of straight lines, Scott creates optical paintings that vibrate and move on the canvas. This work consists of a solid black background with white and yellow rigid line-work that reads as an aerial view of a parking lot. Scott has been showing his paintings since the 1980's; and his work has been exhibited at Le Consortium, Dijon, France; PS1, LIC, New York; Le FRAC, Nord-Pas de Calais, France; Mus?e des Beaux Arts, La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland; Centre National d'art Contemporain de Grenoble, Grenoble, France; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France; Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Geneva, Switzerland; and MAMCO, Geneva, Switzerland. Michael Scott is represented in New York by Sandra Gering, Inc. and Gallery Xippas in Geneva, Switzerland. His work has been written about in publications such as: Art in America, Artnews, Time Out and the New Yorker.

George Stoll, Untitled (Five in a Row), 1995

This sculpture, "Untitled (Five in a Row)" is from 1995. He uses beeswax, paraffin and pigment to create his renditions of the cups. The result is both beautiful and tactile. Once installed, its dimensions are approximately 30 x 9 x 4 inches. Stoll's art is found in such public collections as the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, Brandeis University-Rose Art Museum, University of Washington-Henry Art Gallery, Seattle Art Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

Josef Sudek, Basket of Eggs, early 1970s

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: Josef Sudek (1896-1976) was a Czech artist and photographer. Working mostly alone without assistants, he roamed the streets in the open air in city and countryside of Prague and the surrounding areas with a large-format camera. The photographer produced exquisite, exacting black-and-white prints of cityscapes and landscapes, evocative still lifes, and vignettes glimpsed through his studio window. His style has been called neo-romantic, creating quiet scenes of street life, still lives and views from his window. In 1933, he held his first one-man show in the Krasnajizba salon. Sudek's work first appeared in America in 1974 when the George Eastman House in Rochester, New York, gave him a retrospective exhibition. The same year Light Gallery in New York City showed an exhibition of his photographs. Jan Van Imschoot, La belle pisseuse robuste pour les veillards entre nous, 1999

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: Jan Van Imschoot, b. 1963, is a Belgian contemporary artist. His paintings often have dramatic, highly narrative themes that give his works an unsettling and morbid atmosphere. A recurrent element in his work is the cynicism and irony typical of Flanders. His motifs, elements, figures and texts have been visibly overpainted to lay bare the creative path that Van Imschoot takes to arrive at the final product. This oil on canvas painting, "La belle pisseuse robuste pour les veillards entre nous" dates from 1999. It is 39 x 31.5 inches. Van Imschoot has an eye for the hidden - for what is neglected, excluded or forgotten. He portrays figures found on the margins of society, and tells stories that have traditionally been hidden away. Van Imschoot is represented by major galleries in Brussels, Switzerland and Los Angeles; and his works are collected by international museums.
