Description: Illuminated Ketubah on parchment, recording the marriage of Aharon, son of the deceased Benyamin Abulafia with Sara Bracha daughter of the deceased Eliya Modona of Modena. Ancona, Adar 8, 1789.The Ketubah's borders are adorned with colorful illustrations: the inner frame with two tall pillars, the outer frame with rich floral decorations and on top of the outer frame a heraldic shield with a double-headed eagle. Five lines in eloquent Italian writing appear on the lower part of the Ketubah - the text concerns the monetary arrangements in case one of the parties dies and has no descendants, as well as the signatures of the witnesses "Mordechai Raphael Shimshon Zemach - rabbi and Dayan in Ancona and Yehoshua Shabtai ben Shmuel of Ascoli".Length: 64 cm, width: 47 cm. Good condition. Creases, slight cracks in the paint, cracks near the margins and three holes (with no loss of text or illustration). Framed: 83X67 cm.

Description: Fragments of two illuminated Ketubot which served as book bindings:1. Fragment of an Italian Ketubah. [Mantua?], mid 18th cent., probably Heshvan 1755. Script and illustrations are very faded; reverse side of the Ketubah served as a book binding. Remnants of colorful illuminations - flowers and geometric designs into which the verses of "Eshet Chayil" are integrated - first letters of some of the words, not complete words, appear throughout the text. 35X50 cm. Together with the words of "Our Hope" ("Hatikva) poem Written by Naftali Herz Imber. The scribe: Samson Son of Avraham Eliyahu. Bombay, India, November 1937.the story of Samson is written on the postcard In minute letters, as it appears in the Book of Judges chapters 13 and 14. The words of the poem: "Our hope" by Naftali Herz Imber appear as well; the short version of this poem became Israel's national anthem.At the ending of the text are biographical details regarding the scribe, Samson son of Avraham Eliyahu from "Bene Israel" congregation in Bombay. "After he finished the school of the Bene Israel in Bombay he entered the school of art". It continues: "He traveled to England to study architecture". Description: Papercut, Yehudit Shadur, 1978.Cut and pasted paper. Signed in pencil in Hebrew and English, and on the papercut with initials. The papercut consists of dark paper into which colorful papers are integrated on background of a light brown paper.The composition of the papercut is symmetric, in its center is a gate with the Tablets of the Law and a Torah Crown. On the gate's arch, in yellow letters, appears the verse: "Ivdu et Hashem Besimcha" [Serve the Lord with Joy]. A pomegranate tree in the center with two rams on their hind legs looking backwards.41X43.5 cm, frame 56X55 cm. Very good condition.

Lot 34: Papercut "Shir Hama'alosl" - Eastern Europe

Description: Papercut, Amulet for protection for the mother and baby. East Europe, [19th century].Watercolor on paper.This amulet belongs to a known type of amulets called "Shir Hama'alosl" or kimpertbrivel which means in Yiddish "letter for the childbed". In the center of these amulets appears Psalm 121 which opens with the words "Shir Hamaalot", and thus the name. The amulets were hung on the wall over the mother's bed or the baby's crib. The background of this amulet is floral lattice, with birds and a Star of David in brown, yellow and light blue. The Psalm is written on a reversed triangle with birds on each side. There are standard magic formulas written on the amulet to protect the nursing mother and newborn baby.17x21 cm., stains on paper, a quarter of the frame and part of the floral decoration is missing. 30X27.5 cm. frame.

Description: Esther Scroll. [Jerusalem, 20th cent.]A particularly large Esther Scroll. Written in only eight columns, 50 lines per column. Jerusalemite "Beit Yosef" script. "HaMelech" Scroll [Most leaves open with "HaMelech"]. In a matching case, made of tin, with a lid attached with a hinge. On the lid - a silver plaque with an engraved inscription of the owner: "Avraham Ya'akov Marcus". On top of the lid appears an engraving: "Bikur Cholim Hospital". Rabbi Ya'akov Avraham Marcus, a foremost member of a group of righteous in "Etz Haim" Yeshiva, rabbi of Rabbi Shmuel Huminer and of Rabbi Moshe Baruch Levine. He served as rabbi of Bikur Cholim Hospital for thirty years until his demise this past year.Height of parchment: 56 cm. Fair condition. Wear and spots. Faded letters. Description: Esther Scroll. [Russia-Poland? 19th cent.].Miniature parchment scroll. 12 lines per column. Ashkenazic script. Vowelized throughout. Vowelization of Esther Scrolls is very uncommon since Poskim disagree as far as its Kashrut is concerned. There were Rishonim who claimed that it is invalid much the same as a vowelized Torah is invalid, while others believed that a vowelized Esther Scroll is valid. In "Shulchan Aruch" (Siman 1931) appears the ruling that vowelization does not invalidate the Scroll.Height of parchment: 9 cm. Overall good condition. Faded letters to some sheets. Wear and spotting. Last sheet - loose. Matching cardboard case, torn.
