Distinctive facial features, eyes wide open and determined lines make up Beckmann's recognizable style and the work on hand.The work is in good condition. It shows slight signs of foxing all over. There is a tear of 2.5 cm in the upper left hand corner, a small restored tear and a few more restored tears on the right margin. It is signed lower right in pencil with 'Beckmann' and designated by another hand lower left with '1. Zustand' ('1. condition'). It is mounted under a mat on the upper edge (reversible). The measurements of the mat are 48 x 53 cm and the sheet measures 36.5 x 50.5 cm.Max Beckmann (1884-1950)Max Beckmann was born in Leipzig in 1884. He studied at the Ducal Collage of Art in Weimar in the years between 1900 and 1903. In 1905 he moved to Berlin where he joined the artist group Berlin Secession. In 1910 he is voted the youngest board member of the Berlin Secession. In 1913 Paul Cassirer organized a large retrospective of Beckmann's work with a total of 47 paintings. A year later he is awarded with the Villa Romana prize which enables him a year-long study trip in Florence. In the First World War he volunteered as a paramedic. During this time he starts sketching many impressions of the war. As off 1925 he teaches as a professor in Frankfurt. From 1929 to 1932 he spends the winter months in Paris. In 1933 the Nazis dismiss him from his teaching position. In 1937 his work is classified 'degenerate art' and over 500 works are being pulled out of public German institutions. The sheet's size is 55.3 x 40.7 cm, the print measures 45.6 x 21.1 cm.Edvard Munch (1863-1944)The Norwegian painter and graphic artist Edvard Munch is regarded as a pioneer of Expressionism. His works are often characterized by a deep melancholy. He created lithographs, etchings and woodcuts. The binding The dimensions are 39 x 29 cm.Heinrich Zille (1858-1929)Heinrich Zille came from an impoverished family, often plagued by creditors, and the young Heinrich was forced to earn money with small errands at an early age. He also earned the money for his first drawing lessons himself and served his apprenticeship under a lithographer after leaving school; at the same time he studied under Professor Theodor Hosemann, who advised him to go to the streets, to observe and to draw. After completing his studies Zille was employed by different graphic firms before working for the Photographische Gesellschaft Berlin (Photographic Association Berlin) from 1877 onwards for thirty consecutive years. After his discharge from the military, he began to work as a freelance painter while still working for the Photographische Gesellschaft and developed his characteristic style: his works are characterised by scenes from the Berlin "Milljöh", from the backstreets and the world of the proletarian underclass, to which he often added typical Berlin witticisms. In 1903 Zille became a member of the Berlin Secession. He was a close friend of Max Liebermann and became more and more known and popular, resulting in his appointment as Professor at the Prussian Academy of the Arts in 1924. After his death in 1929, Zille was buried in an Ehrengrab (grave of honour). A museum in Berlin is dedicated to the exceptional artist, countless streets and schools are named after him. In 1938 he took part in the Venice Biennial. As off 1952 he was part of the Italian artist group 'degli Otto'. In 1955 his works were exhibited in New York, where the Modern Museum of Art purchased two of his paintings. In the same year he took part in the first Documenta in Kassel.
