Blaeu, Johannes & Martini, Martino - Novus Atlas Sinensis A Martino Martinio, 17 Maps, 1655

Lot 1: Blaeu, Johannes & Martini, Martino - Novus Atlas Sinensis A Martino Martinio, 17 Maps, 1655

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: "Novus Atlas Sinensis a Martino Martinio.... " Amsterdam: Joannes & Willem Blaeu, 1655. Large Folio (565 x 365mm), Contemporary Publisher's Dutch Panelled Vellum Gilt over boards, with yapp edges, gilt-stamped rectangular frames and floral borders encasing a central lozenge-shaped floral ornament. Engraved hand-coloured title page showing putti around a globe and a map of China, with the title printed on an open door, 4 pages of Dedications, 216, [16], xviii, 40 pp. Illustrated with 17 double-page, hand-coloured engraved maps, 16 of China and one of Japan. First and Only Dutch Edition. Title Page and maps in contemporary publisher's hand-colouring. Blaeu's Novus Atlas Sinensis represents the first European Atlas of China. It remained the standard geographical work on China until the publication of D'Anville's Atlas de la Chine of 1773. Dedicated to the V.O.C. (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie or The Dutch East India Company), to the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III, and to Archduke Leopold Maria of Austria. Of significance and contrary to all other maps printed by the Blaeu firm in their early atlases, the Novus Atlas Sinensis has all the maps printed on one side only, all the versos blank. The volume was prepared by the Jesuit priest Father Martino Martini (1614-1661), an Italian Jesuit missionary in China who made use of "Chinese materials from a much earlier date, originally an atlas compiled by Chu-Ssu-pên in about 1312" (Shirley p. 241). Ferdinand von Richthofen in his China; Ergebnisse eigner Reisen und darauf gegründeter Studien, 1877-85, called Martini's Novus Atlas Sinensis "the most complete geographical description of China that we possess, and through which Martini has become the father of geographical learning on China." "Martino Martini's Novus Atlas Sinensis was the first atlas and geography of China to be published in Europe. The seventeen maps are noteworthy for their accuracy, remarkable for the time, but also for their highly decorative cartouches featuring vignettes depicting regional dress, activities and animals The volume was published as a separate volume by Blaeu in 1655, however, the maps were also included in volume VI of Blaeu's Nieuwe Atlas 1649-58 in Dutch. Koeman BL 29C [2:223.1LU] and Theatrum Orbis Terrarum; sive, Novus Atlas 1655 in Latin (Koeman BL 52 [2: 22521A]) Silk ties trimmed to binding, minor repairs to head and tail of spine, minor browning to a few Maps as usual, a few maps with very light crease near centre fold. A very fine copy and excellent Atlas in original colours.

Lot 2: Bleeker, Pieter - Atlas Ichthyologique des Indes Orientales Néêrlandaises, 7 Vols, 329 Plates, 1862-1876

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: "Atlas Ichthyologique des Indes Orientales Néêrlandaises" Amsterdam, Frederic Muller, 1862-1876, Folio (452 x 281mm), Volumes 1-7 (of 9) with 2 uncoloured lithographs and 327 (of 328) superb coloured lithographed plates of the fishes of the Indo-Pacific, after drawings by L. Speigler under the direction of Bleeker, full calf gilt, red morocco title-pieces. The Finest and Most Beautiful Work on the Fishes of East Asia. Bleeker's work represents the most prolific of any Indo-Pacific ichthyologist. Although he published on fishes around the Indo-Pacific, Europe, Africa and South America, the vast majority of the taxa of fishes he described, were from Indonesia. He described 1,925 new species (more than any other ichthyologist) and a total of 520 genera illustrated in this work. He published 518 scientific articles, mostly in French, Dutch, Latin and English. He founded two scientific journals and editied 22 of their volumes. Athough ichthyology was by far his greatest passion he also published on many other subjects. Pieter Bleeker's wonderful Atlas has inspired a quest for scientific knowledge for generations of ichthyologists. This work's importance enabled the Smithsonian Institution Press to publish all the original Atlas and unpublished drawings in 1983. A fine copy of this rare work. Nissen ZBI 409; Landwehr 17; Wood, p.244. Binding a little rubbed and scuffed. Occasional foxing to plates. The majority clean and bright.

Frith, Francis - Egypt and Palestine, 2 Vols, 76 Albumen Photographic Prints, 1859

Lot 6: Frith, Francis - Egypt and Palestine, 2 Vols, 76 Albumen Photographic Prints, 1859

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: "Egypt and Palestine Photographed and Described" London, James Virtue, 1859. First Edition, Folio (450 x 340mm) 2 vols., Publisher's half morocco gilt, with 76 mounted album photographic prints. Francis Frith is noted for his studies of the Middle East and for establishing the largest photographic publishing firm in the 19th century. The sale of Frith's printing firm in 1854 financed the expeditions to Egypt and the Holy Land that were to establish his pre-eminence among early travel photographers. He made three trips between 1856 and 1860. On the first, he sailed up the Nile to the Second Cataract, recording the main historic monuments between Cairo and Abu Simbel. On the second, he struck eastwards to Palestine, visiting Jerusalem, Damascus and other sites associated with the life of Christ. The final expedition was the most ambitious, combining a second visit to the Holy Land with a deeper southward penetration of the Nile. Unlike many travel photographers of this period, Frith used the wet collodion process in preference to the more convenient paper-based calotype. In 1858-60 he published Egypt and Palestine Photographed and Described by Francis Frith, the first of a series of magnificent albums containing mounted albumen prints accompanied by letterpress commentaries. O.U.P. ref: Gernsheim, Incunabula of British Photographic Literature 1839-1875 Some foxing versos and to margins - mainly extremities. All photographs in fine condition. Binding a little rubbed and scuffed. End papers foxed and with light water staining.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: "The Genera of Birds: Comprising their generic characters,a notice of the habits of each genus, and an extensive list of species, referred to their several genera." Illustrated by David William Mitchell & Joseph Wolf. First Edition. London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1849. 3 vols., large 4to, contemporary half morocco gilt, spines elaborately gilt, with 335 lithographed plates: 185 hand-coloured lithographs of birds including Parrots, Toucans, Kingfishers, Owls, Hummingbirds, plus 150 uncoloured plates of anatomical details, (26 double-page) Gray was curator of the British Museum's bird collections from 1831 until his death in 1871, and the prodigious labor of these three volumes (originally issued in 50 parts between 1844 and 1849) was entirely his own. Over 8,000 species are described, and this is the first attempt that has been made, to collect together a list of species from all available sources. It is one of the fundamental works of 19th century ornithology. Joseph Wolf was brought to England especially for this project after D.W. Mitchell found he could not complete the needed work and is the first work to use Wolf's Illustrations after his move to England. Nissen IVB 388; Fine Bird Books, p. 103; Wood, p. 367; Zimmer, pp. 268-269. Some foxing in parts, mainly to the uncoloured plates. Lyell, Charles - Principles of Geology, First Edition, 1830-32

Lot 10: Lyell, Charles - Principles of Geology, First Edition, 1830-32

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: "Principles of Geology, being an attempt to explain the former changes of the earth's surface, by references to causes now in operation" London: John Murray, 1830-32, 3 volumes, 8vo. xv, [1], 511; xii, 330, [2]; xxxi, [1], 398, 109pp., plus 4pp. publisher's advertisements. 11 plates, including 3 engraved frontispieces (2 hand-coloured), and 3 maps (2 folding, 2 hand-coloured), later half green morocco, old boards. First Edition. Lyell's Principles of Geology revolutionized the science of geology. The work had two major and controversial goals: First, to establish a strict uniformitarian theory of the earth based upon a knowledge of the existing causes and effects of geological change; and second, to give a specific meaning to the term geology; and establish its proper position relative to the other physical sciences. Lyell's work had profound influence upon Charles Darwin, who read the Principles aboard the Beagle. Not only did the work shape Darwin's understanding of geology, but its discussion of the problems of evolution stimulated Darwin's thinking on the subject. The first edition was published in an edition of 1,500 copies and sold for fifteen shillings a copy. Lyell received 200 guineas for the work. The title page of Vol. I indicates that the work was originally intended to be published in two volumes. Norman 1398. Greene, Geology in the 19th Century, pp. 70-76. Rudwick, The Meaning of Fossils, pp. 174-191. Ward & Carozzi, Geology Emerging, 1407. Wilson, Charles Lyell: The Years to 1841, pp. 146-47; 210. Frontis to Volume 1 foxed, as is the Map to volume 2. Small closed margin tear to plate 2, volume 3. Otherwise good.
