Stratford Black Duck

Lot 32: Stratford Black Duck

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: 32. Outstanding black duck circa 1900 from the Stratford school of carving, Stratford, CT. Hollow carved and extremely light with a thin, applied bottom board. Notably pinched breast, shallow ice groove and lightly carved wingtips on the tail. Carved and stamped individual feather detail. Closely aligned incised lines cover the upper three quarters of the back and body as well as covering the entire head. This time consuming treatment of the surface was undoubtedly meant to reduce glare but probably was more attractive and meaningful to the carver than it was to the birds. Paint on the upper two thirds of the decoy appears original with very light wear. Small chip in left tail edge. Bottom has the "CRW" brand. For a similar example or possible rig mate see page 131 in "Connecticut Decoys - Carvers and Gunners" by Chitwood. A pair of mergansers by this unknown maker were sold for a record amount in 2013. 6500-8500

Description: 35. Very rare early black duck by an accomplished pre 1900, Milford, CT carver. Hollow carved with head turned to the right. This regional style was to ultimately be championed by Cassius Smith (1847-1907) of Milford. This decoy is the exact decoy pictured on page 132 of the Chitwood's Connecticut reference where the authors cite it as a prime example of the early Milford style. Also pictured in "Shang" by Merkt p 151. Very worn original paint with large areas of age mellowed wood. Small, ancient "?at area" on right side of head with a few tight grain checks under tail and some tiny chips on top of tail. An extremely early Connecticut classic. 1200-1800
