AIZ Pictorial. Arbeiter-Illustrierte-Zeitung [The Workers Pictorial Newspaper], Year of 1933

Lot 4: AIZ Pictorial. Arbeiter-Illustrierte-Zeitung [The Workers Pictorial Newspaper], Year of 1933

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Bound edition for the year 1933 covering the period from the first issue of that year until December 1933, and runs from page 2-864. (Folio) 10½x14¾", period cloth. The AIZ was a German illustrated magazine published between 1924 and March 1933 in Berlin, and afterward in Prague and finally Paris until 1938. Anti-Fascism and pro-Communism in stance, it was published by Willi Munzenberg and is best remembered for the propagandistic photomontages of John  Heartfield. It was started by the Workers International Relief in Berlin in in 1921 as a magazine of Soviet Russia in pictures with reports of the newly created Russian Soviet state, its achievements and problems.  It grew rapidly during the 1920’s and in 1924 was renamed the AIZ with a new format. In 1928 it became a weekly and was the most widely read Socialist pictorial newspaper in Germany. The magazine covered current events etc. and also focused on women’s issues and gender relations. Munzenberg wanted the AIZ to connect the Communist Party of Germany to a broad educated readership. The photojournalism, often striking, was predominantly worker photography until 1920 when the magazine associated  with John Heartfield, whose photomontages savagely attacked both National Socialism and Weimar Capitalism and became a regular feature. The last issue published in Berlin was dated March 5, 1933 after the seizure of power by Hitler, and the AIZ went into exile in Prague. When the Nazis invaded Czechoslovakia, the publication was moved to Paris in 1938, where it eventually ceased publication. This volume covers the period when the magazine moved from Berlin to Prague. The photography which fills every page is astounding and photographs of the Nazis and the Hitler regime taking over Germany are amazing. The magazines are printed in sepia tone photogravure on very fragile lightweight paper. In 2011 Museo Reina Sofia organized an exhibition in Madrid, “The Worker Photography Movement, 1928-1939” which included many numbers of the AIZ. An important Weimar photography documentary and a rare survivor of the complete year of 1933.

Condition Report: The full cloth binding is completely loose from the text block and is in need of restoration; internally it is in surprisingly good condition considering the fragile nature of the pages, the first 24 pages are loose from the binding and tattered, but appear complete.

Catalogue Illustré de L'Exposition des Arts Incohérents

Lot 10: Catalogue Illustré de L'Exposition des Arts Incohérents

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: [xii], 163, [1], xv, [1] pp. 102 black & white illustrations, plus two photo plates on pale rose paper. (8vo) original stiff blue wrappers. First Edition. The Incoherents was an artist group formed as an ironic counterpoint to the serious, academic movements of the late 19th century. Founded in 1882 by the artist Jules Lévy, the group subscribed to the made-up concept of "le arts incohérents": their earliest exhibition was "drawings by people who can't draw." What was conceived as a hoax, however, achieved extraordinary renown, as their first show was attended by Renoir, Pissarro, Manet and even Richard Wagner. Many of the "crazy" and "wild" works that the Incoherents presented can now be seen as extremely early precursors to dadaism, surrealism and other avant-garde 20th-century styles.

Condition Report: Spine leaning; light foxing; very good.

As noted by A.S. Herbert, "In this edition... the work of correction begun in the folio Cambridge Bible of 1629 was carried further. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: 80 leaves, manuscript on vellum, on both sides. Central column of 19 lines in dark brown, with interlinear and side glosses in lighter brown in miniscule hands. The two books each with a red uncial initial (5 lines ad 3 lines). Arabic numerals in a later hand in the upper corners of some leaves giving chapter numbers. 23x15 cm (9x5¾"). later (c.18th century) green vellum over boards, spine lettered in gilt "Salomon Varia Opuscula," later endpapers.Very rare 12th century glossed Biblical manuscript of the two wisdom books of the Old Testament, Proverbs and Ecclesiastes, with extensive marginal and interlinear notes. Glossed Bibles present an interlinear paraphrase of the vulgate text with surrounding marginal commentaries of the great church fathers. The original manuscript with glossing was apparently executed in Germany in the second half of the 12th century. Contains on fol. 1R-58v book Proverbia Salomonis, on fol. 59R-80v the book of Ecclesiastes. To the best of our information this is the only example of a glossed manuscript of these Biblical texts to appear at auction in several decades.

Condition Report: Normal discoloration and wear to vellum, one small hole in text (likely due to natural flaw in the vellum), another leaf with marginal tear, a few leaves with marginal loss not affecting text; very good condition.
