Description: Oil on canvas scene shows a black hulled whaling ship sailing right to left through iceberg laden water. Six men on board with some sails up and smoke billowing from the one stack. The ship's name emblazoned on bow. Five small boats mounted with harpoon canons at bow carrying six men pursuing whales. Signed lower left "J.T. Duncan, Lochee" and signed bottom right "Painted by P. Stewart Dundee". Housed in an antique bird's-eye maple frame with good liner. Note: The depicted ship fished between 1881 and 1887; in 1886 the ship carried Robert E. Flanked by a bank of two short drawers over two aligned drawers, joined to the lower case fitted with two long drawers all with ebony stringing. The chest raised on turned feet, the sides of each case fitted with brass carrying handles. Beneath chest in quill pen script is written: "R. Macalluter Esq. Brookline." SIZE: 42" h x 44" w x 19" d. The reverse scrimmed with four panels scrimmed with a butterfly, two hearts pierced by an arrow, an anchor posed with three harpoons, and a peacock. 3) An 18th century ambrotype depicting a bearded sailor in cap, mounted within a later bone frame scrimmed with vinery, the border scrimmed "N. The original backboard with script writing in black ink, "James & Elanor Borisch/ July 2th 1821". Examined out of frame. SIZE: Sight: 10" x 14". Description: Outstanding untouched oil on canvas tugboat portrait shows the tug sailing right to left in choppy white tipped greenish blue ocean. The tug has a single stack, billowing smoke, with the captain at wheel, large American flag, and ship's pennant off back flagpole. The name is seen on wheelhouse and stern. A prominent pilot house eagle sits on the roof above the captain. All seen under a blue and white cloud sky. Signed lower right "A. Jacobsen 1903". Housed in a wonderful period lemon-gold frame. Reference: Listed on page 182/183 of "Antonio Jacobsen, The Checklist" by Sniffen as No. 21, the builder was Van Loan and Magee, built in Athens, New York and having New York as its home port. Description: Lot includes two framed watercolors of ships, camphor wood chest, two letters, a small locket tintype, and small notebook. 1) Fine framed watercolor of the ship "Othere". The large watercolor depicts the black-hulled three mast ship sailing right to left past land with other ships in the distance. The sails are full and there are four men on deck. A series of flags on each of the masts including British and shipping line pennant "JK". The watercolor is signed "J(?) Hall 1875". Housed in a gilt molded wood frame with glass and its original cutout matte having a legend "'Othere,' New Glasgow commanded by J.A.C. Green". 2) Framed watercolor of the "Bark Saga". The three mast black-hulled ship is seen sailing from left to right in heavy white-capped seas. Three men are seen on board and most sails are down. A French inscription, bottom right, "Avrillaud Rue La Course 4 Bordeaux". Below watercolor is "Bark Saga Cap JAS A.C. Green 1878". Housed in a gilt wood frame with glass. A note on verso indicates this is one of the ships that sailed around the world and there are five watercolors in the Peabody Museum (listed under "Arvilland"). 3) Lift-top camphor wood chest, the chest having an inset brass plaque inscribed "James A.C. Green, New Glasgow N.S.". The chest with fine brass hardware, dovetailed construction, and two heavy brass side handles. 4) Two letters: July 31, 1892 and August 21, 1892. One to the Captain's mother, the other to his grandmother. Each were written at sea while beating his way with a disabled ship (Gazelle) in the South Atlantic. 5) A small notebook inscribed "Lisa Green, Ladies College, Halifax". 6) 1-1/4" x 1" oval tintype of Captain James Adam Green. Also included is a three page single-spaced typed history of Captain Green and his wife. SIZE: 1) Sight: 18-1/2" x 28-1/4". Overall: 28-1/2" x 38-1/2". 2) Sight: 19-1/4" x 25-1/4". Description: Circa 1877/78. Kennebunkport, Maine. This rare collection of hand-carved and gilt walnut signs carved for and mounted on the barque H. W. Dudley built in 1877. Samples include a large sign carved with a cluster of grapes and fruit above the title, "H. W. DUDLEY. BUILT. BY. D. CLARK. KENNEBUNK me./SUPERINTENDED. BY. CAPT D. W. DUDLEY." on the back of which if affixed an old label signed by Captain Daniel W. Dudley which reads, "This carving and lettering made for me on board H. W. Dudley in 1878 signed D. W. Dudley". The second sign crested with a cluster of nuts framed by carved leaf tips and scroll work carved "HOME SWEET HOME" with the back affixed with an old inventory label, "Made on board H. W. Dudley 1878 for D. W. Dudley". Additionally, a small sign carved "IN GOD WE TRUST", two name boards noted for cabin, port and starboard sides each carved "H.W.D./BOSTON" bordered by berry sprigs, two signs carved with the word "WARDROBE", one "BATHROOM" stamped with the initials D.W.D., "KITCHEN", and "PANTRY", two carved directional arrows with star-punch decoration inscribed on the reverse in pencil "Made for D. W. Dudley in 1879. . . . Japan". The last carved in the form of a monogram "HWD" with star punch decoration. This sign was never completed. REFERENCE: The Dudley Family were residents of Kennebunkport. Captain Daniel W. Dudley master of the barque H. W. Dudley on its maiden voyage and on subsequent voyages in company with his wife who gave birth to three children on board in 1880, 1884, and 1886. Among the Dudley Family Archives, now located at the Brick Store Museum, Kennebunk, Maine, is a copy of the ship's manifest listing Captain, crew, and passengers on a voyage from New York to Sydney, NSW 1881 it was during this voyage that the ship apparently passed off of Krakatoa after the eruption of 1881 sailing through floating pumice stones and untold numbers of dead bodies. A selection of photocopies relating to this group are available to the buyer. SIZE: First: 46" l. Second: 12" h x 29-1/2" l. Third: 26" l. Wardrobe & bathroom: 19-1/2" l, Kitchen & pantry: 14-1/2" l. The rectangular mirror plate within a molded slip beneath an eglomise panel with a depiction of the battle between the USS Constitution and HMS Guerriere flanked by swelled rope twist and fluted engaged half columns, each headed by a floral rosette. The stepped molded cornice with twelve pendent acorn finials above the frieze decorated with applied leaf tips and spherules. The whole gold gilt decorated. SIZE: 51-1/2" h x 28-3/4" w overall.
