According to the Florentine artist and chronicler Giorgio Vasari, writing in the mid-16th-century, Leonardo's cartoon was put on public display in Florence around 1500, drawing large crowds to view the artwork.

Ex-collection Prosper Henry Lankrink (Lugt 2090, lower right recto on the mount). Cavedone was associated with the Carracci and their Academy in the early 1600s; in 1619 he became Caposindaco of the Accademia degli Incamminati, with sojourns to Rome (1609) and Venice (1612-13). In 1604-05 he worked under Ludovico Carracci on a mural cycle in the cloister of San Michele in Bosco outside Bologna. The current work is a study for his fresco of the same-title in the cloister of San Michele.

Dr. Stephen Pepper examined the work in person and confirmed the attribution of the drawing. It is possibly related to the head of Cleopatra in the picture in Sir Denis Mahon's collection from around 1639-40 (Pepper, Guido Reni, Novara, 1988, number 181, plate 168). Based on a photograph, Veronika Birke doubted this attribution on March 17, 1997.
