Lot 1789: [Amsterdam]. Verdeeling der Stad Amsterdam in 50

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: [Amsterdam]. Verdeeling der Stad Amsterdam in 50 Buurten gemerkt A-ZZ. N.pl., n.publ., 1850, fold. handol. engr. plan by D. VEELWAARD JR: "Platte Grond der stad Amsterdam" (Amst., Mortier Covens en Zoon, 1832 [= 1837-1839], 36x48,8 cm.) and 50 (47x handcol.) lithogr. sectional plans, contemp. clothbacked boards w. orig. giltlettered lithogr. darkblue frontwr. laid down, obl. folio. - Sm. worn spot in title-cartouche of Mortier Covens plan and two corrections (erasing of erroneously placed burrough letters "I" and "Y"). Binding sl. rubbed. = Rare atlas and rare plan. On the atlas see Hameleers I, 195: "Omdat de Nederlandse regering inzicht wilde hebben in de demografische ontwikkelingen van het land, dienden de gemeente besturen vanaf 1 januari 1850 hun bevolkingsregistratie te gaan standaardiseren tot het landelijke bevolkingsregister. (...) De wet bepaalde dat gemeenten boven de 5000 inwoners in buurten verdeeld moesten worden. (...) Voor Amsterdam, de grootste gemeente van het land, resulteerde dit in vijftig buurten: 46 binnen de Singelgracht (aangeduid met de letters A tot en met Z en AA tot en met VV) en vier (de buurten WW, XX, YY en ZZ) daarbuiten." Three maps (WW, YY and ZZ) are still uncoloured, most likely because of their small number of inhabitants. On the Mortier Covens plan see Hameleers I, 160: the 2nd edition of the plan with the extra sluice between the Nieuwe Vaart and the Rapenburger Gracht and with indications of the 50 burroughs, 6 constabulary districts and 4 cantonal court districts. Hameleers states that of the 10 copies in the Stads Archief Amsterdam, 8 are handcoloured. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE XXXIX.
